Use strtoul() more carefully.
Check that the major and minor are valid.
Don't print `.' at the end of error messages.
Fixed all warnings from "cc -Wall".

Finally use strtoul() to convert the major an minor numbers, so
proper error-checking can be done, and octal and hexadecimal
numbers are allowed.
