def802441f Yet another round of fixes for the VESA support code.
- Express various sizes in bytes, rather than Kbytes, in the video
  mode and adapter information structures.
- Fill 0 in the linear buffer size field if the linear frame buffer
  is not available.
- Remove SW_VESA_USER ioctl. It is still experimetal and was not meant
  to be released.
- Fix missing cast operator.
- Correctly handle pointers returned by the VESA BIOS. The pointers
may point to the area either in the BIOS ROM or in the buffer supplied
  by the caller.
- Set the destructive cursor at the right moment.

6b7a14ce57 Make the ELF kernel build produce a dynamic executable (!). This enables
the in-kernel linker to access the _DYNAMIC data for doing loadable elf
modules. The alpha kernel is already done this way, I've borrowed some of
the hacks from there.

This is primarily aimed at the 3-stage boot process which is intended to
be able to do pre-loading of kernel modules.

Note that the entry point isn't 0xf0100000 any more, it'll be a little
further on - but this value is stored in the headers. I don't think this
will be a problem, but I'm sure somebody will tell me if it is. :-)

I'm not sure if btxboot is going to like this, it doesn't do proper ELF
header checking and assumes that there are exactly two program header
entries and that they are both PT_LOAD entries - a bad assumption.

b9b5f72bb6 Fix (?) EISA interrupt configuration based on observation of what we've
seen in practice. The MPspec is ambiguous and/or contradicts itself.
We now look at the ELCR to determine the trigger mode (edge/level) of an
interrupt tagged as "conforming" in the mptable. EISA interrupts appear
to be presented to the APIC as active high in all cases (they are level
inverted) that we've seen, so use this for the 'conforming' level case.

Of note, the system I'm using has 2 PCI cards in it, and the PCI cards
interrupts (5 and 9) appear in the ELCR register as level sensitive and the
mptable lists 5 and 9 as coming from the EISA bus. The PCI interrupts
are active-high by the time they reach the APIC even though they are
electrically active low at the slot.

We should still work should somebody implement this on motherboards
differently in the future as long as the mptable is clear about the
trigger/polarity.

Current should work on Holm Tiffe's machine now.

eb70c7babf Back out rev 1.6 (temporarily at least). <machine/asmacros.h> is used
here for getting the #defines for the removal of the leading '_' in symbols
in the assembler code. We could probably #include <machine/asnames.h>
instead, but everything else seems to use asmacros.h directly as well.
Once we convert symbols, this becomes irrelevant.

ef7b5df757 Cosmetic changes:
- there were too many global variables (there still are :-).
- the data section was bloated by explicit initializations of static
variables to 0 (only fixed the recently changed ones).
- WRAPHIST() had silly parentheses around foo->bar.
- the comment about inline functions was stale.
- the comment about Userconfig presumes too much about the boot environment.
- `i' was reused confusingly in scioctl().
- the declaration of `butmap' used a deprecated K&R misfeature.
- the initializeation of `butmap' had an unnecessary line break.
- `unsigned char' was not consistently (mis)spelled as u_char.
- English was poor in a comment in videoio.c.

these numbers to real video mode numbers appropriate and available
with the given video hardware. I believe this will be useful to make

5b036e2b3c Fixed missing dependencies of genassym.o, gensetdefs.o and vers.o
on opt_global.h. This actually matters for genassym.o (it depends
on at least SMP).

Don't undefine KERNEL for compiling genassym.c. genassym.o really
depends on KERNEL, and the prototype mismatches that required
undefining KERNEL in rev.1.49 no longer exist.

Compile gensetdefs* with the same flags as genassym*. External
`gen' programs such linux_genassym should also use these flags
(${GEN_CFLAGS}).

Fixed missing dependency generation for gensetdefs.o. C sources
for external `gen' programs should be added to GEN_CFILES to get
their dependencies generated.

Cleaned up flags definitions and use. All of ${CFLAGS} is now
passed to mkdep and the assembler (both are actually variants of
${CC} and will ignore the irrelevant flags).

If you want to statically link the VESA support code to the kernel,
add the following option to the kernel configuration file.
        options "VESA"

The vidcontrol command now accepts the following video mode names:
VESA_132x25, VESA_132x43, VESA_132x50, VESA_132x60, VESA_800x600

The VESA_800x600 mode is a raster display mode. The 80x25 text will
be displayed on the 800x600 screen. Useful for some laptop computers.

vidcontrol accepts the new `-i <info>' option, where <info> must be
either `adapter' or `mode'. When the `-i adapter' option is given,
vidcontrol will print basic information (not much) on the video
adapter. When the `-i mode' option is specified, vidcontrol will
list video modes which are actually supported by the video adapter.

HARP | Host ATM Research Platform
                ===================================

                              HARP 3

What is this stuff?
-------------------
The Advanced Networking Group (ANG) at the Minnesota Supercomputer Center,
Inc. (MSCI), as part of its work on the MAGIC Gigabit Testbed, developed
the Host ATM Research Platform (HARP) software, which allows IP hosts to
communicate over ATM networks using standard protocols. It is intended to
be a high-quality platform for IP/ATM research.

HARP provides a way for IP hosts to connect to ATM networks. It supports
standard methods of communication using IP over ATM. A host's standard IP
software sends and receives datagrams via a HARP ATM interface. HARP provides
functionality similar to (and typically replaces) vendor-provided ATM device
driver software.

HARP includes full source code, making it possible for researchers to
experiment with different approaches to running IP over ATM. HARP is
self-contained; it requires no other licenses or commercial software packages.

HARP implements support for the IETF Classical IP model for using IP over ATM
networks, including:

o IETF ATMARP address resolution client
o IETF ATMARP address resolution server
   o IETF SCSP/ATMARP server
   o UNI 3.1 and 3.0 signalling protocols
o Fore Systems's SPANS signalling protocol

What's supported
----------------
The following are supported by HARP 3:

   o ATM Host Interfaces
        - FORE Systems, Inc. SBA-200 and SBA-200E ATM SBus Adapters
        - FORE Systems, Inc. PCA-200E ATM PCI Adapters
        - Efficient Networks, Inc. ENI-155p ATM PCI Adapters

   o ATM Signalling Protocols
        - The ATM Forum UNI 3.1 signalling protocol
        - The ATM Forum UNI 3.0 signalling protocol
        - The ATM Forum ILMI address registration
        - FORE Systems's proprietary SPANS signalling protocol
        - Permanent Virtual Channels (PVCs)

o IETF "Classical IP and ARP over ATM" model
        - RFC 1483, "Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM Adaptation Layer 5"
        - RFC 1577, "Classical IP and ARP over ATM"
        - RFC 1626, "Default IP MTU for use over ATM AAL5"
        - RFC 1755, "ATM Signaling Support for IP over ATM"
        - RFC 2225, "Classical IP and ARP over ATM"
        - RFC 2334, "Server Cache Synchronization Protocol (SCSP)"
        - Internet Draft draft-ietf-ion-scsp-atmarp-00.txt,
"A Distributed ATMARP Service Using SCSP"

   o ATM Sockets interface
        - The file atm-sockets.txt contains further information

What's not supported
--------------------
The following major features of the above list are not currently supported:

        o UNI point-to-multipoint support
o Driver support for Traffic Control/Quality of Service
o SPANS multicast and MPP support
o SPANS signalling using Efficient adapters

This software was developed under the sponsorship of the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

357f7eb6eb The aout->elf transition build from a 2.2.5/6/7 system requires that
a kernel be built and installed at just the right time. If the system
were to be rebooted after installing the 3.0 binaries without the
new kernel, the system is hosed.

The addition of this config file reserves the name of the config file
that the upgrade procedure uses. If an upgrade is to be performed on
a 2.2.5/6/7 system system for which a GENERIC kernel is inadequate,
this config file must be replace with a suitable one before performing
the upgrade.

On systems which report 'uname -r' as 3.0-CURRENT, the kernel build
is not performed and this file is ignored.

b63b587cb3 A better fix for kern/7144:
The check for dropping unicast packets not sent to our ethernet
address is after the bpf tap, but not conditioned on it. All packets
received should get handed to bpf, and unicast packets not to us (mac)
should get dropped whether or not there is a bpf listener. I believe
that the common optimization that the interface is in hw promisc mode
iff there is a bpf listener is in general wrong, but more frequently
so on wavelans.

I think Max's fix makes bpf listeners not see unicast packets sent to
others, but I'm not sure.

One can argue that checking on MOD_ENAL is wrong, but the code only
drops packets that shouldn't be received. The correctness condition
is that it be run whenever unicast packets without our mac address can
be received.

ca0154bc75 Revamp the ELF include files to better support architecture-independent
applications. Here's how it works.

The kernel should include <machine/elf.h> to get the definitions
for the native architecture. It can reference the various ELF
structures with generic names like Elf_Sym, Elf_Shdr, etc. A define
__ELF_WORD_SIZE is also available with the value 32 or 64 as
appropriate for the native architecture.

Generic applications should include <elf.h>, which is just a wrapper
for <machine/elf.h>.

Applications such as object file dumpers that need to deal with
foreign ELF files can include <sys/elf32.h> and/or <sys/elf64.h>.
Both can be included from the same source file if desired. The
structure names must be referenced using wordsize-specific names
like Elf32_Sym, Elf64_Shdr, etc.

I haven't change the alpha stuff, but I haven't broken it either.

69ed480f48 pmap.c:
Cast pointers to (vm_offset_t) instead of to (u_long) (as before) or to
(uintptr_t)(void *) (as would be more correct). Don't cast vm_offset_t's
to (u_long) just to do arithmetic on them.

mp_machdep.c:
Cast pointers to (uintptr_t) instead of to (u_long). Don't forget
to cast pointers to (void *) first or to recover from integral
possible integral promotions, although this is too much work for
machine-dependent code.

vm code generally avoids warnings for pointer vs long size mismatches
by using vm_offset_t to represent pointers; pmap.c often uses plain
`unsigned int' instead of vm_offset_t and didn't use u_long elsewhere,
but this style was messed up by code apparently imported from mp_machdep.c.

b55fb9dee6 Use an array of uintptr_t's instead of an array of u_longs to hold
address constants. This fixes some warnings for conversions from
64-bit integers to 32-bit pointers on i386's with 64-bit longs.
vm86 still uses too many u_longs.

24382fa41f Oops, the previous fix confused Linux's sigset_t with a pointer type.
It can be integral or a struct in POSIX, so it is difficult to print,
but it is actually declared as unsigned long. Assume that it is
unsigned integral.

87543489d0 Cleaned up previous commit, mainly by moving repetitive calculations
of invariants to cyattach().

Fixed minor bugs:
- cyparam() returned without restoring the ipl in the error cases. This
was harmless because cyparam() is always called at spltty().
- one check for "rev. J or higher" actually checked for precisely rev. J.

in ddb) which I broke by changing %8[l]x to %8p. Hacked the central

width is nonzero. The tables are still horribly misformatted on
64-bit machines.

Use %p instead of %8p to print pointers when the field width isn't
important.

882fdeae66 Converted the second last instance of hzto() to tvtohz().
Fixed nearby bugs (in linux_alarm()):
- the itimer for the alarm was relative to the epoch instead of relative
to the boot time. This was harmless because the itimer's interval is 0.
- the seconds arg was not checked for validity before converting it to a
  possibly different value.
- printf format errors.

Improvements:
Don't use splclock(). splsoftclock() suffices. Don't complicate things
by micro-optimizing interrupt latency.

Minor improvements:
Various micro-optimizations to exploit the specialness of the alarm itimer
and the value 0.
