i386 platform boots, it is no longer ISA-centric, and is fully dynamic.
Most old drivers compile and run without modification via 'compatability
shims' to enable a smoother transition. eisa, isapnp and pccard* are
not yet using the new resource manager. Once fully converted, all drivers
will be loadable, including PCI and ISA.
(Some other changes appear to have snuck in, including a port of Soren's
ATA driver to the Alpha. Soren, back this out if you need to.)
This is a checkpoint of work-in-progress, but is quite functional.
The bulk of the work was done over the last few years by Doug Rabson and

All it did was match a specific device ID and turn on a quirk for
the wdc driver.
Incidently, at line 1462 there is a return that prevents the generic
ide_pci code from trying to look at the device. I'd be interested
to know if we can take out the return and let the generic code "see" it.
I've left the return in because that's the way it worked before.

perform a cleanup/unifdef sweep over it to tidy things up. The atapi
code is permanently attached to the wd driver and is always probed.
I will add an extra option bit in the flags to disable an atapi probe on
either the master or slave if needed, if people want this.
Remember, this driver is destined to die some time. It's possible that
it will loose all atapi support down the track and only be used for
dumb non-ATA disks and all ata/atapi devices will be handled by the new
ata system.
ATAPI, ATAPI_STATIC and CMD640 are no longer options, all are implicit.

affects cases where there is a slave but no master. These bugs
were usually recovered from provided ATAPI was configured, but only
after lengthy delays. Configuring ATAPI still fixes some bugs for
non-atapi drives.
Don't wait for seek complete in wdreset(). If necessary for pre-ata
drives, it can be waited for later (we got it wrong by only looking
at it for drive 0 anyway). It is set as part of a historical
signature for ata drives but doesn't say anything useful about the
reset state. It is cleared as part of a non-historical signature
for atapi drives so that drivers which don't understand atapi drives
seem to see no drive. Waiting for it caused lengthy delays and
broke the status returned by wdreset() in cases where the master
was not an ata drive. Then the whole wdprobe() failed in some
cases where the recovery code didn't work.
Don't wait for drive ready in wdreset(). The considerations are
the same as for seek complete, except drive ready does say something
useful about the reset state of ata drives, and waiting for it
later is required anyway for such drives.
Lengthy delays can now be avoided by not configuring nonexistent
(ata) drives. Unfortunately, this breaks detection of atapi drives
in some configurations.

peripheral drivers can determine where in the devstat(9) list they are
inserted.
This requires recompilation of libdevstat, systat, vmstat, rpc.rstatd, and
any ports that depend on the devstat code, since the size of the devstat
structure has changed. The devstat version number has been incremented as
well to reflect the change.
This sorts devices in the devstat list in "more interesting" to "less
interesting" order. So, for instance, da devices are now more important
than floppy drives, and so will appear before floppy drives in the default
output from systat, iostat, vmstat, etc.
The order of devices is, for now, kept in a central table in devicestat.h.
If individual drivers were able to make a meaningful decision on what
priority they should be at attach time, we could consider splitting the
priority information out into the various drivers. For now, though, they
have no way of knowing that, so it's easier to put them in an easy to find
table.
Also, move the checkversion() call in vmstat(8) to a more logical place.
Thanks to Bruce and David O'Brien for suggestions, for reviewing this, and
for putting up with the long time it has taken me to commit it. Bruce did
object somewhat to the central priority table (he would rather the
priorities be distributed in each driver), so his objection is duly noted
here.

run with the 8012 without any changes.
Finally a big Thanks! to RealTek for promptly providing me with

The vidcontrol command now accepts the following video mode names:
VESA_132x25, VESA_132x43, VESA_132x50, VESA_132x60, VESA_800x600
The VESA_800x600 mode is a raster display mode. The 80x25 text will
be displayed on the 800x600 screen. Useful for some laptop computers.
vidcontrol accepts the new `-i <info>' option, where <info> must be
either `adapter' or `mode'. When the `-i adapter' option is given,
vidcontrol will print basic information (not much) on the video
adapter. When the `-i mode' option is specified, vidcontrol will
list video modes which are actually supported by the video adapter.

and use this when masking/unmasking interrupts.
Maintain a mapping from (iopaic number, int pin) tuple to irq number,
and use this when configuring devices and programming the ioapics.
Previous code assumed that irq number was equal to int pin number, and
that the ioapic number was 0.
Don't let an AP enter _cpu_switch before all local apics are initialized.
Add a sysctl 'machdep.cs_recv_delay' to specify how long to wait after
receiving a packet in order to check for a subsequent (back-to-back)
packet. The cs8900 has a very small receive buffer, so this helps avoid
overflows at the cost of some extra CPU overhead.

for the Lite2 fix for always returning EIO in dead_read().
Cleaned up the cdevswitch initializers for all tty drivers.
Removed explicit calls to ttsetwater() from all (tty) drivers. ttsetwater()
is now called centrally for opens, not just for parameter changes.
The check for dropping unicast packets not sent to our ethernet
address is after the bpf tap, but not conditioned on it. All packets
received should get handed to bpf, and unicast packets not to us (mac)
should get dropped whether or not there is a bpf listener. I believe
that the common optimization that the interface is in hw promisc mode
iff there is a bpf listener is in general wrong, but more frequently
so on wavelans.
I think Max's fix makes bpf listeners not see unicast packets sent to
others, but I'm not sure.
One can argue that checking on MOD_ENAL is wrong, but the code only
drops packets that shouldn't be received. The correctness condition
is that it be run whenever unicast packets without our mac address can
be received.

for 1 second's worth of input) and larger tty output buffers. The
interrupt-level buffers are still too small for speeds above 115200
bps (only a little too small for 230400 bps if RTS flow control is
enabled).
Don't call ttsetwater() explicitly in open(). It is now called for
the TTYDISC l_open() and should be static.
Don't attempt to register the cdevsw more than once.
I don't have access to a real VT220 to verify this against.
However, I'm committing the patch in `good faith' because
(a) getting hold of a real VT220 is going to be increasingly difficult
the longer the PR sits around,
(b) some one was troubled enough to in a PR and
(c) the fix is minor and has no other implications.

of invariants to cyattach().
Fixed minor bugs:
- cyparam() returned without restoring the ipl in the error cases. This
was harmless because cyparam() is always called at spltty().
- one check for "rev. J or higher" actually checked for precisely rev. J.
