94b6d72794 Back out part 1 of the MCFH that changed $Id$ to $FreeBSD$. We are not
ready for it yet.

f27596dab0 This no longer depends on NFS being defined so that it
can check for an NFS root. With Lite2, the file system
type can be checked by checking if the rootfs name == "nfs".

808a36ef65 Make the long-awaited change from $Id$ to $FreeBSD$
This will make a number of things easier in the future, as well as (finally!)
avoiding the Id-smashing problem which has plagued developers for so long.

Boy, I'm glad we're not using sup anymore. This update would have been
insane otherwise.

2a6138200a Made minimal changes to make this work again (it depended on devconf).
swapgeneric.c hasn't had anything to do with swapping for some time.
It just makes the -a boot option actually work, and breaks the static
configuration of rootdev and dumpdev. It should be reorganized to
only support -a.

e1b78916a4 if there is no console, cngetc should act like getc and return -1
make callers aware of this in those cases where it can occur.

a68baeec5a Externalize the declaration of dc_list. This is required in order to
get a ``generic'' kernel (``config kernel swap generic'') to compile.

c853217459 Moving the kern.dumpdev sysctl handler from kern_sysctl.c to swapgeneric.c
is not real helpful since swapgeneric.c doesn't seem to be used, except
perhaps on a GENERIC kernel. (Sorry Paul.. :-)

I've moved it from swapgeneric.c to autoconf.c, since autoconf.c also deals
with dumpdev things. There may be a better place.....

6b7609f909 A major sweep over the sysctl stuff.
Move a lot of variables home to their own code (In good time before xmas :-)

Introduce the string descrition of format.

Add a couple more functions to poke into these marvels, while I try to
decide what the correct interface should look like.

Next is adding vars on the fly, and sysctl looking at them too.

Removed a tine bit of defunct and #ifdefed notused code in swapgeneric.

ec8963af8a Make swapgeneric.c compile and (sort of) work again.
This is really just a token gesture at this point. We can't really turn
on swapping here anymore because (I think) we need to do a namei() lookup
in order to get a vnode which we can pass to swaponvp(). But to do a
namei(), we need a properly initialized proc structure, and we don't
have one. (I was hopping to toss it proc0, but that isn't initialized
until later.) We could conceiveably fabricate a dummy proc structure
to make namei() happy, but that's too much work for too little payoff.

For now, swapgeneric's only remaining saving grace is that it lets
you set the root device with -a.

a80ddb7b20 First part of importing the Japanese `od' driver.
Claim the major numbers (before sombedoy else jumps in again and
claims the slots for his foocd driver :-), install all the hooks that
are required.

While i've been at this, i've cleaned up some of the routines at the
end of i386/conf.c; all the importers of the latest CDROM drivers
forgot to fill in the appropriate information. The `ata' driver
(vapourware?) does only occupy a slot in the bdevsw[] array, btw.

The actual import of the code does require a minor change in the SCSI
subsystem, and i want to have this reviewed by Peter first, so it will
be deferred for some days. The driver is already working for me
though.

fddddf561e - Add an entry to allow swapping on a vn device (if one is configured).
- Do the right thing when booting in NFS diskless mode, which is nothing.
Make the default unconfigured entries for swdevt[0] and dumplo something
that swapconf() will ignore and not choke on (the swap setup is done
  in nfs_vfsops.c when booting diskless).

ones.

00ed2950da Make 'config [kernel] swap generic' work again. It would seem that
'matcd' has taken over the position and major number of 'pcd,' so
swapgeneric.c needs to be updated accordingly. (It was still looking
for pcd.h.)

09c2d4af77 From Bill Paul:
- /sys/i386/i386/swapgeneric.c is just plain broke. But fear not, for I
have unbroken it. One thing that swapgeneric.c does is walk through the
list of configured devices searching for a boot device. The only easy
way to accomplish this in 2.0 is to use Garret Wollman's kern_devconf
stuff. *BUT*, the head of the kern_devconf linked list (dc_list) is declared
static in /sys/kern/kern_devconf.c. This means that swapgeneric.c can't
see it at link time. I had to remove the 'static' keyword to get around
this little problem. I hope this doesn't break anything anywhere.

*Furthermore,* there's a small matter of making the call to setconf()
in swapgeneric.c disappear when 'config kernel swap generic' isn't used.
You could change /sbin/config to create a dummy setconf() function in
swapkernel.c, but that seems messy somehow. (It's also someting of an
'it isn't broken, why are you fixing it' situation.) My solution was to
do what the NetBSD people did and put an #ifdef GENERIC around the call
to setconf(). If your kernel is called GENERIC or you define 'options
GENERIC,' then you can use 'config kernel swap generic' and it'll work.

That aside, the upshot is that: a) swapgeneric.c actually works, and
and b) the -a boot flag now works as well. If you boot with -a, as in
"Boot: wd(0,a)/kernel -a" you will be presented with a 'root device?'
prompt after the autoconfig phase, at which point you can specify what
device you want mounted as root. Regrettably, you can't specify an NFS
filesystem. Yet. Three files are affected: /sys/i386/i386/swapgeneric.c,
  /sys/i386/i386/autoconf.c and /sys/kern/kern_devconf.c.

07e1c7f69d Change all #includes to follow the current Berkeley style. Some of these
``changes'' are actually not changes at all, but CVS sometimes has trouble
telling the difference.

This also includes support for second-directory compiles. This is not
quite complete yet, as `config' doesn't yet do the right thing. You can
still make it work trivially, however, by doing the following:

rm /sys/compile
mkdir /usr/obj/sys/compile
ln -s M-. /sys/compile
cd /sys/i386/conf
config MYKERNEL
cd ../../compile/MYKERNEL
ln -s /sys @
rm machine
ln -s @/i386/include machine
