a8445737e7 Add VESA support to syscons.
Kazu writes:

The VESA support code requires vm86 support. Make sure your kernel
configuration file has the following line.
        options "VM86"
If you want to statically link the VESA support code to the kernel,
add the following option to the kernel configuration file.
        options "VESA"

The vidcontrol command now accepts the following video mode names:
VESA_132x25, VESA_132x43, VESA_132x50, VESA_132x60, VESA_800x600

The VESA_800x600 mode is a raster display mode. The 80x25 text will
be displayed on the 800x600 screen. Useful for some laptop computers.

vidcontrol accepts the new `-i <info>' option, where <info> must be
either `adapter' or `mode'. When the `-i adapter' option is given,
vidcontrol will print basic information (not much) on the video
adapter. When the `-i mode' option is specified, vidcontrol will
list video modes which are actually supported by the video adapter.

HARP | Host ATM Research Platform
                ===================================

                              HARP 3

What is this stuff?
-------------------
The Advanced Networking Group (ANG) at the Minnesota Supercomputer Center,
Inc. (MSCI), as part of its work on the MAGIC Gigabit Testbed, developed
the Host ATM Research Platform (HARP) software, which allows IP hosts to
communicate over ATM networks using standard protocols. It is intended to
be a high-quality platform for IP/ATM research.

HARP provides a way for IP hosts to connect to ATM networks. It supports
standard methods of communication using IP over ATM. A host's standard IP
software sends and receives datagrams via a HARP ATM interface. HARP provides
functionality similar to (and typically replaces) vendor-provided ATM device
driver software.

HARP includes full source code, making it possible for researchers to
experiment with different approaches to running IP over ATM. HARP is
self-contained; it requires no other licenses or commercial software packages.

HARP implements support for the IETF Classical IP model for using IP over ATM
networks, including:

o IETF ATMARP address resolution client
o IETF ATMARP address resolution server
   o IETF SCSP/ATMARP server
   o UNI 3.1 and 3.0 signalling protocols
o Fore Systems's SPANS signalling protocol

What's supported
----------------
The following are supported by HARP 3:

   o ATM Host Interfaces
        - FORE Systems, Inc. SBA-200 and SBA-200E ATM SBus Adapters
        - FORE Systems, Inc. PCA-200E ATM PCI Adapters
        - Efficient Networks, Inc. ENI-155p ATM PCI Adapters

   o ATM Signalling Protocols
        - The ATM Forum UNI 3.1 signalling protocol
        - The ATM Forum UNI 3.0 signalling protocol
        - The ATM Forum ILMI address registration
        - FORE Systems's proprietary SPANS signalling protocol
        - Permanent Virtual Channels (PVCs)

o IETF "Classical IP and ARP over ATM" model
        - RFC 1483, "Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM Adaptation Layer 5"
        - RFC 1577, "Classical IP and ARP over ATM"
        - RFC 1626, "Default IP MTU for use over ATM AAL5"
        - RFC 1755, "ATM Signaling Support for IP over ATM"
        - RFC 2225, "Classical IP and ARP over ATM"
        - RFC 2334, "Server Cache Synchronization Protocol (SCSP)"
        - Internet Draft draft-ietf-ion-scsp-atmarp-00.txt,
"A Distributed ATMARP Service Using SCSP"

   o ATM Sockets interface
        - The file atm-sockets.txt contains further information

What's not supported
--------------------
The following major features of the above list are not currently supported:

        o UNI point-to-multipoint support
o Driver support for Traffic Control/Quality of Service
o SPANS multicast and MPP support
o SPANS signalling using Efficient adapters

This software was developed under the sponsorship of the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

This sort of violates "the unix way" but it stops people from whacking

94d1a20141 o Enable standby mode in apm utility. You need a newer kernel for this
functionality to work (however, the kernel changes were committed
to current at 1998/07/05 23:29:11 PDT).
o Enable setting of a timer for later wakeup. Note, not all APM
BIOSes support this for all modes (mine doesn't support waking up on
  a timer from standby mode).
o Print out the APM capabilities, as reported by the BIOS.
o Report wake on ring indication. No way to enable/disable this, but
  it is reported.
o update man page with above
o The output of this command has changed, so if you have a script that
parses its output, then you may need to rewrite it slightly.
o The code attempts to deal with older kernels than July 5, 1998, but
that part of the code isn't well tested.

9e8aac2526 DNS lookups for partially qualified hosts didn't work right. I was trying
to be clever by avoiding the 'check all domains in the search list'
cycle in certain cases, but this would lose if handed a name like
"foo.ctr" which refers to an FQDN of "foo.ctr.columbia.edu". If
"columbia.edu" is in the search list in /etc/resolv.conf then the
DNS lookup code should resolve it, but it didn't.

170812ea7a Add snprintf.c to SRCS so that the function quad_to_string exists. The
snprintf function itself is still #ifdef'd out by conf.h. This allows this
program to link when compiled without optimization. With optimization,
the call to quad_to_string gets removed by the compiler. Unfortunately
the linker still links in the quad_to_string function even though it
isn't called. 8-(

02c589d9e9 This may apply to all known versions of inetd.
For a tcp/nowait connection, inetd invokes accept(2) for
each pending connection; this call returns a file descriptor
associated with the new connection.

Twelve years ago, code was added to inetd to detect "failing
servers". The heuristic that identifies a failing server is
one that has been invoked a large number of times over some
specified interval (e.g., more than 128 ftp services started
in 60 seconds may flag the ftp service as "failing"). These
compile-time constants vary depending on vendor.

The problem is that, when a failing server is detected, the
code neglects to close the file descriptor returned by the
accept(2).

Security-Implications:
I suppose someone with ample free time could orchestrate an
attack buy pummeling services until the inetd process finally
runs out of file descriptors thus rendering inetd useless to
any new connections that require a new descriptor.

Notes:
The fileupdate function is still somewhat broken. Instead of
returning a failure code if it can't modify the original file it
renames the .new file and continues as though nothing is wrong.
This will cause the lock on the original file to be lost and could
lead to a similar race condition. I left that portion of the code
alone since I feel that the maintainer of the code would have a
better concept of how he wants to handle errors in that function
    than I do.

o If we're in multilink mode, than the link level CCP goes
straight to ST_STOPPED irrespective of what's configured so that
we never try to compress compressed stuff by default.

The patch supports using the X10 Mouse Remote in both stand-alone and
pass-through configurations, so you can plug your mouse and remote into the
same serial port, use the mouse for X, and use the remote for other apps
like Fxtv. For instance, we can now control fxtv via the remote control
just like a TV : change channels, mute, increase volume, zoom video,
freeze frame 8)

The mouse events are channeled through the syscons/sysmouse I/F like
normal, and the remote buttons are "syphoned off" to a UNIX-domain stream
socket (defined as _PATH_MOUSEREMOTE in <machine/mouse.h>) for a
remote-aware app to grab and use.

Without this code, if the other side mis-behaves (and

cr*p all over the stack before returning.... quickly
followed by a SIGBUS.

7840cfdd8b Create a new flag, "nochange", which will specify that a directory is
to be created if it's missing, otherwise completely ignore it's modes and
owners. Primary intended targets: /usr/src and /usr/obj.

Adjust the 'not created: File exists' message to mention that it's a
directory that's the problem, otherwise it doesn't make sense.

I had created chown-style -L and -P flag to control logical/physical mode
(ie: whether symlinks were followed), but the nochange flag is enough to
get the blasted thing out of my hair so I took them back out.

02cd25bfe2 Darnit, that last commit was only supposed to change files in the
-current branch. I mistakenly checked out the 2.2.x rpc.ypxfrd into my
-current working directory. No harm done, but I got really confused
when I went to check out rpc.ypxfrd again and found the changes I
wanted to make were already there. (I'm going to fix the other 2.2.x
versions of the other programs in a minute.)

Anyway: protect errno in the signal handler, in the -current version
of rpc.ypxfrd this time.

68a5c45fb2 Simplified using new yacc rules. This will fix bugs when we stop picking
up a possibly stale version of ns_parser.h from contrib/bind.

f66ca81068 Remove bogus #defines and redefintions for KERNEL, mount, nfs_init, the
beastie builds just fine without them and gets less warnings.

8e7b85992b o If there's a session leader left running for a descriptor
that we're now closing, manually HUP that session leader
so that the tty is fully released.
o Always restart our carrier detect timer in the receiving
process if it was running in the sending process (as we
  now *always* pass the descriptor).
o Tweak argv when we go into pause() mode to keep our session
so that ps can see what's going on (without checking for a
  `pause' state in `ps -l').

81358fa3fc o Make modes consistent throughout ppp. The same strings are used
in `set mode', `allow modes', on the command line and when
outputting mode names. The strings are matched so that only
enough characters to uniquely identify the string are required,
  so you can now

ppp -a mylabel (for auto mode)
ppp -b mylabel (for background mode)
ppp -dd mylabel (for direct dial mode)

  etc.
o Make -ddial dial when specified on the command line (oops).
