8efad4996b Fxi various man pages to stop abusing the .Bx macro to generate
the string "FreeBSD". Use the .Fx macro instead. Also did some
minor re-wording/formatting to work around a deficiency with
the .Fx macro when it comes to puncuation characters other than
periods and commas.

319dab65f1 Revert the change from memset() to bzero(), since bzero() is simply
a special case of memset and we already initialize all those
members of the struct tm which are required by mktime().

The memset() is only necessary for style conformity with the rest
of the file. :-)

9d4189be2d Don't build with X support if DESTDIR is defined. This prevents
breaking a cross-build caused by taking the X libraries on the

9495b8cb30 Dedocument one of the BUGS listed in the last commit. The bug (needless
calculation of line numbers) never existed and the two bugs that made me
think it existed have been fixed (see recent commits about this date to
linenum.c:r.1.3 and ch.c:r.1.8 fixing broken line-number buffering and
braindead algorithms respectively).

5e2e694640 Rather than use an LRU-ordered circular list to store buffered data,
simply keep an index into the last access on the circular list and begin
searches at that point. An LRU list is inappropriate here since the
vast majority of accesses will occur in the same order that the list
is created in. The only case where an LRU is remotely useful here is when
reading from a file and the user is jumping to randomish positions and
constantly returning to some central position. Even for this case it is
such a small optimization as not to be noticed in an interactive program
such as more(1).

This change results in a _tremendously_ noticable speed-up when reading long
files through a pipe (where long = ~200k, machine = ~2.5h single-disk
worldstone).

d44e2d4226 Revert the libcrypt/libmd stuff back to how it was. This should not have
happened as it was working around problems elsewhere (ie: binutils/ld
not doing the right thing according to the ELF design). libcrypt has
been adjusted to not need the runtime -lmd. It's still not quite right
(ld is supposed to work damnit) but at least it doesn't impact all the
users of libcrypt in Marcel's cross-build model.

Since the environment variable test is only performed for callers

be overriden. Currently, chpass and pwd_mkdb are the only users

make(1) uses sysctlbyname() to find out if it is running on a PC98
machine. This check has been added on 1998/9/9. The MIB variable was
added on 1998/8/31. At that time __FreeBSD_version was 300003. So,
only perform the check *if* __FreeBSD_version is defined and if it's
greater than 300003.

For the record: sysctlbyname was added on 1997/5/30 so this change
automaticly handles that...

3a2839fec9 Allow a user specified parameter to 'yyparse()', in a manner similar to
that used by bison. The names are consistent with the bison implementation
but this one also allows the type of the parameter to be specified.

For a desired prototype of:

	int yyparse __P((struct yyresult *));

and compile like this:

	yacc -dv grammar.y
	cc -c -DYYPARSE_PARAM_TYPE="struct yyresult *" \
	      -DYYPARSE_PARAM="parm" y.tab.c

and use like this:

	${
	#include "usrtypes.h"
	#include "usrproto.h"
	}$

	%token NUMBER

	%%

	goal : NUMBER
		{
		parm->value = yylval;
		} ;

If YYPARSE_PARAM_TYPE isn't specified then "void *" is the default type.
If YYPARSE_PARAM is not specified then the generated code behaves exactly
as traditional byacc.

d4e7039177 Unbreak doscmd after the sigset_t change:
doscmd heavily depends on struct sigcontext which luckily is mostly passed
between functions as usion regcontext_t. By redefining union regcontext_t in
terms of mcontext_t almost all bases are covered.

It also seems to me that doscmd was in a transitional state. The redundant
definitions made it difficult to get a clear overview and could easily cause
oversight. To make sure my changes were ok, I went as far as to complete the
transition. It was not exactly necessary, but I expect to have to come back
here some more ("whistle" if I'm wrong :-).

5bf7ce284b sigset_t change (part 5 of 5)
-----------------------------

Most of the userland changes are in libc. For both the alpha
and the i386 setjmp has been changed to accomodate for the
new sigset_t. Internally, libc is mostly rewritten to use the
new syscalls. The exception is in compat-43/sigcompat.c

The POSIX thread library has also been rewritten to use the
new sigset_t. Except, that it currently only handles NSIG
signals instead of the maximum _SIG_MAXSIG. This should not
be a problem because current applications don't use any
signals higher than NSIG.

There are version bumps for the following libraries:
  libdialog
  libreadline
  libc
  libc_r
  libedit
  libftpio
  libss

These libraries either a) have one of the modified structures
visible in the interface, or b) use sigset_t internally and
may cause breakage if new binaries are used against libraries
that don't have the sigset_t change. This not an immediate
issue, but will be as soon as applications start using the
new range to its fullest.

NOTE: libncurses already had an version bump and has not been
      given one now.

NOTE: doscmd is a real casualty and has been disconnected for
      the moment. Reconnection will eventually happen after
      doscmd has been fixed. I'm aware that being the last one
      to touch it, I'm automaticly promoted to being maintainer.
      According to good taste this means that I will receive a
      badge which either will be glued or mechanically stapled,
      drilled or otherwise violently forced onto me :-)

NOTE: pcvt/vttest cannot be compiled with -traditional. The
      change cause sys/types to be included along the way which
      contains the const and volatile modifiers. I don't consider
      this a solution, but more a workaround.

316ad4142e Remove the #include of sys/param.h. It was meant to improve portability
for BSD less than 4.4 where sys/cdefs.h DNE but can be simulated with
param.h. Unfortunately, the additional include did little to actually
improve portability since we've lost portability in several other chunks
of make code (err(), sysctlbyname(), probable more).

"Make no longer properly parses archive files, so using archive members

Really should be merged into 3.3 before we ship if we can..
it's a trivial fix.

4000b20086 Improve shell documentation:
* Consistently misspell built-in as builtin.

* Add a builtin(1) manpage and create builtin(1) MLINKS for all shell
  builtin commands for which no standalone utility exists. These MLINKS
  replace those that were created for csh(1).

* Add appropriate xrefs for builtin(1) to the csh(1) and sh(1) manpages,
  as well as to the manpages of standalone utilities which are supported
  as shell builtin commands in at least one of the shells. In such
  manpages, explain that similar functionality may be provided as a
  shell builtin command.

* Improve sh(1)'s description of the cd builtin command. Csh(1) already
  describes it adequately. Replace the cd(1) manpage with a builtin(1)
  MLINKS link.

* Clean up some mdoc problems: use Xr instead of literal "foo(n)"; use
  Ic instead of Xr for shell builtin commands.

* Undo English contractions.

a14fe466b1 Thorough revamp of how input commands are processed. This allows customization
of user keys (documentation pending). The only key whose semantics have
changed is the capital 'N' key, which now performs a repeat-search in the
opposite direction (just like in vi).

This commit is a little bulkier than what I had originally planned. I'm not
completely happy with the direction it went, but it's definately an
improvement, and the alternative is to continue becoming irrelevant compared
to GNU less. (Does anyone even _use_ /usr/bin/more these days?)
