4f4eb0cfe5 The second phase of syscons reorganization.
- Split syscons source code into manageable chunks and reorganize
  some of complicated functions.

- Many static variables are moved to the softc structure.

- Added a new key function, PREV. When this key is pressed, the vty
immediately before the current vty will become foreground. Analogue
to PREV, which is usually assigned to the PrntScrn key.
  PR: kern/10113
  Submitted by: Christian Weisgerber <naddy@mips.rhein-neckar.de>

- Modified the kernel console input function sccngetc() so that it
  handles function keys properly.

- Reorganized the screen update routine.

- VT switching code is reorganized. It now should be slightly more
  robust than before.

- Added the DEVICE_RESUME function so that syscons no longer hooks the
  APM resume event directly.

- New kernel configuration options: SC_NO_CUTPASTE, SC_NO_FONT_LOADING,
  SC_NO_HISTORY and SC_NO_SYSMOUSE.
Various parts of syscons can be omitted so that the kernel size is
  reduced.

  SC_PIXEL_MODE
Made the VESA 800x600 mode an option, rather than a standard part of
  syscons.

  SC_DISABLE_DDBKEY
  Disables the `debug' key combination.

  SC_ALT_MOUSE_IMAGE
Inverse the character cell at the mouse cursor position in the text
console, rather than drawing an arrow on the screen.
  Submitted by: Nick Hibma (n_hibma@FreeBSD.ORG)

  SC_DFLT_FONT
  makeoptions "SC_DFLT_FONT=_font_name_"
Include the named font as the default font of syscons. 16-line,
14-line and 8-line font data will be compiled in. This option replaces
the existing STD8X16FONT option, which loads 16-line font data only.

- The VGA driver is split into /sys/dev/fb/vga.c and /sys/isa/vga_isa.c.

- The video driver provides a set of ioctl commands to manipulate the
  frame buffer.

- New kernel configuration option: VGA_WIDTH90
  Enables 90 column modes: 90x25, 90x30, 90x43, 90x50, 90x60. These
modes are mot always supported by the video card.
  PR: i386/7510
  Submitted by: kbyanc@freedomnet.com and alexv@sui.gda.itesm.mx.

- The header file machine/console.h is reorganized; its contents is now
  split into sys/fbio.h, sys/kbio.h (a new file) and sys/consio.h
(another new file). machine/console.h is still maintained for
  compatibility reasons.

- Kernel console selection/installation routines are fixed and
slightly rebumped so that it should now be possible to switch between
the interanl kernel console (sc or vt) and a remote kernel console
(sio) again, as it was in 2.x, 3.0 and 3.1.

- Screen savers and splash screen decoders
Because of the header file reorganization described above, screen
savers and splash screen decoders are slightly modified. After this
update, /sys/modules/syscons/saver.h is no longer necessary and is
  removed.

60b2d4c5bd This commit adds driver support for PCI fast ethernet cards based on the
ADMtek AL981 "Comet" chipset. The AL981 is yet another DEC tulip clone,
except with simpler receive filter options. The AL981 has a built-in
transceiver, power management support, wake on LAN and flow control.
This chip performs extremely well; it's on par with the ASIX chipset
in terms of speed, which is pretty good (it can do 11.5MB/sec with TCP
easily).

I would have committed this driver sooner, except I ran into one problem
with the AL981 that required a workaround. When the chip is transmitting
at full speed, it will sometimes wedge if you queue a series of packets
that wrap from the end of the transmit descriptor list back to the
beginning. I can't explain why this happens, and none of the other tulip
clones behave this way. The workaround this is to just watch for the end
of the transmit ring and make sure that al_start() breaks out of its
packet queuing loop and waiting until the current batch of transmissions
completes before wrapping back to the start of the ring. Fortunately, this
does not significantly impact transmit performance.

This is one of those things that takes weeks of analysis just to come
up with two or three lines of code changes.

f3f6ab89ed Major lobotomy of config(8). The
config kernel mumble mumble

line has been obsoleted and removed and with it went all knowledge of
devices on the part of config.

You can still configure a root device (which is used if you give
the "-r" flag) but now with an option:

        options ROOTDEVNAME=\"da0s2e\"

The string is parsed by the same code as at the "boot -a" prompt.

At the same time, make the "boot -a" prompt both more able and more
informative.

ALPHA/PC98 people: You will have to adapt a few simple changes
(defining rootdev and dumpdev somewhere else) before config works
for you again, sorry, but it's all in the name of progress.

fd47563fe4 Add device driver support for the Lucent WaveLAN/IEEE 802.11 PCMCIA
adapter (and some workalikes). Also add man pages and a wicontrol
utility to manipulate some of the card parameters.

This driver was written using information gleaned from the Lucent HCF Light
library, though it does not use any of the HCF Light code itself, mainly
because it's contaminated by the GPL (but also because it's pretty gross).
The HCF Light lacks certain featurs from the full (but proprietary) HCF
library, including 802.11 frame encapsulation support, however it has
just enough register information about the Hermes chip to allow someone
with enough spare time and energy to implement a proper driver. (I would
have prefered getting my hands on the Hermes manual, but that's proprietary
too. For those who are wondering, the Linux driver uses the proprietary
HCF library, but it's provided in object code form only.)

Note that I do not have access to a WavePOINT access point, so I have
only been able to test ad-hoc mode. The wicontrol utility can turn on
BSS mode, but I don't know for certain that the NIC will associate with
an access point correctly. Testers are encouraged to send their results
to me so that I can find out if I screwed up or not.

087d4857e5 Bring the 'new-bus' to the i386. This extensively changes the way the
i386 platform boots, it is no longer ISA-centric, and is fully dynamic.
Most old drivers compile and run without modification via 'compatability
shims' to enable a smoother transition. eisa, isapnp and pccard* are
not yet using the new resource manager. Once fully converted, all drivers
will be loadable, including PCI and ISA.

(Some other changes appear to have snuck in, including a port of Soren's
ATA driver to the Alpha. Soren, back this out if you need to.)

This is a checkpoint of work-in-progress, but is quite functional.

The bulk of the work was done over the last few years by Doug Rabson and
Garrett Wollman.

7d0299e0a5 Shoot the LKM support in the old wd/wdc/atapi driver set in the head and
perform a cleanup/unifdef sweep over it to tidy things up. The atapi
code is permanently attached to the wd driver and is always probed.

I will add an extra option bit in the flags to disable an atapi probe on
either the master or slave if needed, if people want this.

Remember, this driver is destined to die some time. It's possible that
it will loose all atapi support down the track and only be used for
dumb non-ATA disks and all ata/atapi devices will be handled by the new
ata system.

ATAPI, ATAPI_STATIC and CMD640 are no longer options, all are implicit.

477aac47c6 Add driver support for gigabit ethernet adapters based on the Alteon
Networks Tigon 1 and Tigon 2 chipsets. There are a _lot_ of OEM'ed
gigabit ethernet adapters out there which use the Alteon chipset so
this driver covers a fair amount of hardware. I know that it works with
the Alteon AceNIC, 3Com 3c985 and Netgear GA620, however it should also
work with the DEC/Compaq EtherWORKS 1000, Silicon Graphics Gigabit
ethernet board, NEC Gigabit Ethernet board and maybe even the IBM and
and Sun boards. The Netgear board is the cheapest (~$350US) but still
yields fairly good performance.

Support is provided for jumbo frames with all adapters (just set the
MTU to something larger than 1500 bytes), as well as hardware multicast
filtering and vlan tagging (in conjunction with the vlan support in
-current, which I should merge into -stable soon). There are some hooks
for checksum offload support, but they're turned off for now since
FreeBSD doesn't have an officially sanctioned way to support checksum
offloading (yet).

I have not added the 'device ti0' entry to GENERIC since the driver
with all the firmware compiled in is quite large, and it doesn't really
fit into the category of generic hardware.
