e8453b9f3c mempool: remove redundant socket id assignment
There is a redundant repetition mempool socket_id assignment in the
file rte_mempool.c in function rte_mempool_create_empty. The
statement "mp->socket_id = socket_id;"appear twice in line 821
and 824. One of them is redundant, so delete it.

f5e9ed5c4e mempool: fix leak if populate fails
This patch fixes the issue of memzone not being freed incase the
rte_mempool_populate_phys fails in the rte_mempool_populate_default

This issue was identified when testing with OVS ~2.6
- configure the system with low memory (e.g. < 500 MB)
- add bridge and dpdk interfaces
- delete brigde
- keep on repeating the above sequence.

1e975578bc mempool: fix search of maximum contiguous pages
paddr[i] + pg_sz always points to the start physical address of the
2nd page after pddr[i], so only up to 2 pages can be combinded to
be used. With this revision, more than 2 pages can be used.

e15922d75a mempool: fix corruption due to invalid handler
When using rte_mempool_create(), the mempool handler is selected
depending on the flags given by the user:
  - multi-consumer / multi-producer
  - multi-consumer / single-producer
  - single-consumer / multi-producer
  - single-consumer / single-producer

The flags were not properly tested, resulting in the selection of sc/sp
handler if sc/mp or mc/sp was asked. This can lead to corruption or
crashes because the get/put operations are not atomic.

79d6f5fc58 lib: work around unnamed structs/unions
Exported header files used by applications should allow the strictest
compiler flags. Language extensions used in many places must be explicitly
marked to avoid warnings and compilation failures.

Unnamed structs/unions are allowed since C11, however many compiler
versions do not use this mode by default.

This commit prevents the following errors:

 error: ISO C99 doesn't support unnamed structs/unions
 error: struct has no named members

cae54ac47c mempool: fix unsafe removal from list by callback
If a mempool is removed from the list by a callback function
during rte_mempool_walk(), the TAILQ_FOREACH loop will fail unexpectedly.
It is fixed by using the safe version of the loop macro.

A recent patch brought up an issue about the size of the 'name' fields:

85cf0079 mem: avoid memzone/mempool/ring name truncation

These relations should be observed:

1. Each ring creates a memzone with a prefixed name:
RTE_RING_NAMESIZE <= RTE_MEMZONE_NAMESIZE - strlen(RTE_RING_MZ_PREFIX)

2. There are some mempool handlers which create a ring with a prefixed
name:
RTE_MEMPOOL_NAMESIZE <= RTE_RING_NAMESIZE - strlen(RTE_MEMPOOL_MZ_PREFIX)

3. A mempool can create up to RTE_MAX_MEMZONE pre and postfixed memzones:
sprintf(postfix, "_%d", RTE_MAX_MEMZONE)
RTE_MEMPOOL_NAMESIZE <= RTE_MEMZONE_NAMESIZE -
	strlen(RTE_MEMPOOL_MZ_PREFIX) - strlen(postfix)

Setting all of them to 32 hides this restriction from the application.
This patch decreases the mempool and ring string size to accommodate for
these prefixes, but it doesn't apply the 3rd constraint. Applications
relying on these constants need to be recompiled, otherwise they'll run
into ENAMETOOLONG issues.
The size of the arrays are kept 32 for ABI compatibility, it can be
decreased next time the ABI changes.

happens by default, as long as CONFIG_RTE_LIBRTE_MEMPOOL_DEBUG is disabled:

 warning: empty struct has size 0 in C, size 1 in C++

C and C++ must use the same size for objects to avoid corruption during run
time.

57faf30b07 mempool: add stack mempool handler
This is a mempool handler that is useful for pipelining apps, where
the mempool cache doesn't really work - example, where we have one
core doing rx (and alloc), and another core doing Tx (and return).
In such a case, the mempool ring simply cycles through all the mbufs,
resulting in a LLC miss on every mbuf allocated when the number of
mbufs is large. A stack (LIFO) recycles buffers more effectively in
this case.

a0fd91cefc mempool: rename functions with confusing names
The mempool_count and mempool_free_count behaved contrary to what their
names suggested. The free_count function actually returned the number of
elements that were allocated from the pool, not the number unallocated as
the name implied.

Fix this by introducing two new functions to replace the old ones,
* rte_mempool_avail_count to replace rte_mempool_count
* rte_mempool_in_use_count to replace rte_mempool_free_count

In this patch, the new functions are added, and the old ones are marked
as deprecated. All apps and examples that use the old functions are
updated to use the new functions.

4b5062755a mempool: allow user-owned cache
The mempool cache is only available to EAL threads as a per-lcore
resource. Change this so that the user can create and provide their own
cache on mempool get and put operations. This works with non-EAL threads
too. This commit introduces the new API calls:

    rte_mempool_cache_create(size, socket_id)
    rte_mempool_cache_free(cache)
    rte_mempool_cache_flush(cache, mp)
    rte_mempool_default_cache(mp, lcore_id)

Changes the API calls:

    rte_mempool_generic_put(mp, obj_table, n, cache, flags)
    rte_mempool_generic_get(mp, obj_table, n, cache, flags)

The cache-oblivious API calls use the per-lcore default local cache.

449c49b93a mempool: support handler operations
Until now, the objects stored in a mempool were internally stored in a
ring. This patch introduces the possibility to register external handlers
replacing the ring.

The default behavior remains unchanged, but calling the new function
rte_mempool_set_ops_byname() right after rte_mempool_create_empty() allows
the user to change the handler that will be used when populating
the mempool.

This patch also adds a set of default ops (function callbacks) based
on rte_ring.

a3f34a98b7 log: deprecate history dump
The log history uses rte_mempool. In order to remove the mempool
dependency in EAL (and improve the build), this feature is deprecated.
The ABI is kept but the behaviour is now voided because it seems this
function was not used. The history can be read from syslog.

c042ba2067 mempool: rework support of Xen dom0
Avoid to have a specific file for that, and remove #ifdefs.
Now that we have introduced a function to populate a mempool
with a virtual area, the support of xen dom0 is much easier.

The only thing we need to do is to convert the guest physical
address into the machine physical address using rte_mem_phy2mch().
This function does nothing when not running xen.

Introduce rte_mempool_free() that:

- unlink the mempool from the global list if it is found
- free all the memory chunks using their free callbacks
- free the internal ring
- free the memzone containing the mempool

Currently this function is only used in error cases when
creating a new mempool, but it will be made public later
in the patch series.

1a6bbb8b6f mempool: replace physical address by a memzone pointer
Storing the pointer to the memzone instead of the physical address
provides more information than just the physical address: for instance,
the memzone flags.

Moreover, keeping the memzone pointer will allow us to free the mempool
(this is done later in the series).

aab4f62d6c mempool: support no hugepage mode
Introduce a new function rte_mempool_populate_virt() that is now called
by default when hugepages are not supported. This function populate the
mempool with several physically contiguous chunks whose minimum size is
the page size of the system.

Thanks to this, rte_mempool_create() will work properly in without
hugepages (if the object size is smaller than a page size), and 2
specific workarouds can be removed:

- trailer_size was artificially extended to a page size
- rte_mempool_virt2phy() did not rely on object physical address

d1d914ebbc mempool: allocate in several memory chunks by default
Introduce rte_mempool_populate_default() which allocates
mempool objects in several memzones.

The mempool header is now always allocated in a specific memzone
(not with its objects). Thanks to this modification, we can remove
many specific behavior that was required when hugepages are not
enabled in case we are using rte_mempool_xmem_create().

This change requires to update how kni and mellanox drivers lookup for
mbuf memory. For now, this will only work if there is only one memory
chunk (like today), but we could make use of rte_mempool_mem_iter() to
support more memory chunks.

We can also remove RTE_MEMPOOL_OBJ_NAME that is not required anymore for
the lookup, as memory chunks are referenced by the mempool.

Note that rte_mempool_create() is still broken (it was the case before)
when there is no hugepages support (rte_mempool_create_xmem() has to be
used). This is fixed in next commit.

df25b24bde mempool: get memory size with unspecified page size
Update rte_mempool_xmem_size() so that when the page_shift argument is
set to 0, assume that memory is physically contiguous, allowing to
ignore page boundaries. This will be used in the next commits.

By the way, rename the variable 'n' as 'obj_per_page' and avoid the
affectation inside the if().

da81e1cde7 mempool: introduce a free callback for memory chunks
Introduce a free callback that is passed to the populate* functions,
which is used when freeing a mempool. This is unused now, but as next
commits will populate the mempool with several chunks of memory, we
need a way to free them properly on error.

Later in the series, we will also introduce a public rte_mempool_free()
and the ability for the user to populate a mempool with its own memory.
For that, we also need a free callback.

This commit simplifies rte_mempool_xmem_usage().

Since previous commit, the function rte_mempool_xmem_usage() is
now the last user of rte_mempool_obj_mem_iter(). This complex
code can now be moved inside the function. We can get rid of the
callback and do some simplification to make the code more readable.

a2ccd6b742 mempool: remove macro to check if contiguous
This commit removes MEMPOOL_IS_CONTIG().

The next commits will change the behavior of the mempool library so that
the objects will never be allocated in the same memzone than the mempool
header. Therefore, there is no reason to keep this macro that would
always return 0.

This macro was only used in app/test.

This makes the code of rte_mempool_create() clearer, and it will make
the introduction of external mempool handler easier (in another patch
series). Indeed, this function contains the specific part when a ring is
used, but it could be replaced by something else in the future.

This commit also adds a socket_id field in the mempool structure that
is used by this new function.

they were added to the mempool. This patch changes this to do the
initialization of all objects once the mempool is populated, using
rte_mempool_obj_iter() introduced in previous commits.

that would allow us to do:

  mempool_populate(mem1)
  mempool_populate(mem2)
  mempool_populate(mem3)
  mempool_init_obj()

d86046f0cf mempool: use the list to iterate the elements
Now that the mempool objects are chained into a list, we can use it to
browse them. This implies a rework of rte_mempool_obj_iter() API, that
does not need to take as many arguments as before. The previous function
is kept as a private function, and renamed in this commit. It will be
removed in a next commit of the patch series.

The only internal users of this function are the mellanox drivers. The
code is updated accordingly.

Introducing an API compatibility for this function has been considered,
but it is not easy to do without keeping the old code, as the previous
function could also be used to browse elements that were not added in a
mempool. Moreover, the API is already be broken by other patches in this

8c988cab80 mempool: remove const qualifier in dump and audit
In next commits, we will use an iterator to walk through the objects in
mempool in rte_mempool_audit(). This iterator takes a "struct
rte_mempool *" as a parameter because it is assumed that the callback
function can modify the mempool.

The previous approach was to introduce a RTE_DECONST() macro, but
after discussion it seems that removing the const qualifier is better
to avoid fooling the compiler, and also because these functions are
not used in datapath (possible compiler optimizations due to const
are not critical).

c2c66588e2 mempool: remove const qualifier when browsing pools
This commit removes the const qualifier for the mempool in
rte_mempool_walk() callback prototype.

Indeed, most functions that can be done on a mempool require a non-const
mempool pointer, except the dump and the audit. Therefore, the
mempool_walk() is more useful if the mempool pointer is not const.

This is required by next commit where the mellanox drivers use
rte_mempool_walk() to iterate the mempools, then rte_mempool_obj_iter()
to iterate the objects in each mempool.

This commit renames mempool_obj_ctor_t as mempool_obj_cb_t.

In next commits, we will add the ability to populate the
mempool and iterate through objects using the same function.
We will use the same callback type for that. As the callback is
not a constructor anymore, rename it into rte_mempool_obj_cb_t.

The rte_mempool_obj_iter_t that was used to iterate over objects
will be removed in next commits.

No functional change.
In this commit, the API is preserved through a compat typedef.

This commit replaces elt_size by total_elt_size when appropriate.

In some mempool functions, we use the size of the elements as arguments
or variables. There is a confusion between the size including or not
including the header and trailer.

To avoid this confusion:
- update the API documentation
- rename the variables and argument names as "elt_size" when the size
  does not include the header and trailer, or else as "total_elt_size".

The rte_mempool structure is changed, which will cause an ABI change
for this structure. Providing backward compat is not reasonable
here as this structure is used in multiple defines/inlines.

Allow mempool cache support to be dynamic depending on if the
mempool being created needs cache support. Saves about 1.5M of
memory used by the rte_mempool structure.

Allocating small mempools which do not require cache can consume
larges amounts of memory if you have a number of these mempools.

50705e8e3c eal: add assert macro for debug
The macro RTE_VERIFY always checks a condition.
It is optimized with "unlikely" hint.
While this macro is well suited for test applications, it is preferred
in libraries and examples to enable such check in debug mode.
That's why the macro RTE_ASSERT is introduced to call RTE_VERIFY only
if built with debug logs enabled.

A lot of assert macros were duplicated and enabled with a specific flag.
Removing these #ifdef allows to test these code branches more easily
and avoid dead code pitfalls.

The ENA_ASSERT is kept (in debug mode only) because it has more
parameters to log.

alignment constraints.  However, the compiler is unaware of this fact and

d2e0ca22f5 mempool: add structure for object headers
Each object stored in mempools are prefixed by a header, allowing for
instance to retrieve the mempool pointer from the object. When debug is
enabled, a cookie is also added in this header that helps to detect
corruptions and double-frees.

Introduce a structure that materializes the content of this header,
and will simplify future patches adding things in this header.

e221e274aa mempool: fix returned value after counting objects
rte_mempool_xmem_usage()'s return type is ssize_t which has the same
architecture-dependent width as size_t but is signed.

On 64-bit architectures, returning a negative uint32_t value without casting
to ssize_t first does not work as intended, the sign bit is lost and the
returned value is garbage.

This commit fixes an assertion failure in testpmd on 64 bit architectures
when combining --no-huge and --mp-anon outside of Xen Dom0:

 PANIC in mempool_anon_create():
 line 170        assert "elt_num == mp->size" failed

For non-EAL thread, bypass per lcore cache, directly use ring pool.
It allows using rte_mempool in either EAL thread or any user pthread.
As in non-EAL thread, it directly rely on rte_ring and it's none preemptive.
It doesn't suggest to run multi-pthread/cpu which compete the rte_mempool.
It will get bad performance and has critical risk if scheduling policy is RT.
Haven't found significant performance decrease by mempool_perf_test.

To differentiate libraries that break ABI, we add a library version number
suffix to the library, which must be incremented when a given libraries ABI is
broken.  This patch enforces that addition, sets the initial abi soname
extension to 1 for each library and creates a symlink to the base SONAME so that
the test applications will link properly.

dd0024ccbc mempool: make tailq fully local
Since the data structures such as rings are shared in their entirety,
those TAILQ pointers are shared as well. Meaning that, after a
successful rte_ring creation, the tailq_next pointer of the last
ring in the TAILQ will be updated with a pointer to a ring which may
not be present in the address space of another process (i.e. a ring
that may be host-local or guest-local, and not shared over IVSHMEM).
Any successive ring create/lookup on the other side of IVSHMEM will
result in trying to dereference an invalid pointer.

This patchset fixes this problem by creating a default tailq entry
that may be used by any data structure that chooses to use TAILQs.
This default TAILQ entry will consist of a tailq_next/tailq_prev
pointers, and an opaque pointer to arbitrary data. All TAILQ
pointers from data structures themselves will be removed and
replaced by those generic TAILQ entries, thus fixing the problem
of potentially exposing local address space to shared structures.

Technically, only rte_ring structure require modification, because
IVSHMEM is only using memzones (which aren't in TAILQs) and rings,
but for consistency's sake other TAILQ-based data structures were
adapted as well.

591a9d7985 add FILE argument to debug functions
The DPDK dump functions are useful for remote debugging of an
applications. But when application runs as a daemon, stdout
is typically routed to /dev/null.

Instead change all these functions to take a stdio FILE * handle
instead. An application can then use open_memstream() to capture
the output.

  In particular, we have L1: Y divides nchan and new_obj_size.
- By H2, we have L2: nchan divides (nrank * nchan)
- By L1 and L2, we have L3: Y divides (nrank * nchan) and
  new_obj_size.
- By H1 and L3, we have L4: (Y <= X).
- By S1 and S2, we have L5: (Y != 0).
- By L0 and L5, we have L6: (Y > 1).
- By L4 and L6, we have (X > 1) and thus (X != 1), which concludes.

R2 was also tested for all values of new_obj_size, nrank, and nchan
between 0 and 2000.

This redundant condition was found using TrustInSoft Analyzer.

4cf4c837db mempool: use GCC push/pop_options
The include file should not change the GCC compile options for
the whole file being compiled, but only for the one inline function
that needs it. Using the push_options/pop_options fixes this.

1896b4ec5e mem: fix mempool for --no-huge
In --no-huge mode, mempool provides objects with their associated
header/trailer fitting in a standard page (usually 4KB).
This means all non-UIO driver should work correctly in this mode,
since UIO drivers allocate ring sizes that cannot fit in a page.

Extend rte_mempool_virt2phy to obtain the correct physical address when
elements of the pool are not on the same physically contiguous memory region.

Reason for this patch is to be able to run on a kernel < 2.6.37 without
the need to patch it, since all kernel below are either bugged or don't
have huge page support at all (< 2.6.28).

148f963fb5 xen: core library changes
Core support for using the Intel DPDK with Xen Dom0 - including EAL
changes and mempool changes. These changes encompass how memory mapping
is done, including support for initializing a memory pool inside an
already-allocated block of memory.
KNI sample app updated to use KNI close function when used with Xen.
