Trying to disable the vhost library, meson will complain it can't build
the vhost* and vdpa examples when passing -Dexamples=all.
-Dexamples=all skips examples if the example itself announces it can't
be built (for external dependencies, internal dependencies and other
reasons).
Since examples/meson.build will evaluate the internal dependencies
in any case, let's move the check there and resolve the issue for
optional internal libraries.

way. The macros for backward compatibility can be removed in next LTS.

Removing 'DEV_RX_OFFLOAD_JUMBO_FRAME' offload flag.
Instead of drivers announce this capability, application can deduct the
capability by checking reported 'dev_info.max_mtu' or
'dev_info.max_rx_pktlen'.
And instead of application setting this flag explicitly to enable jumbo
frames, this can be deduced by driver by comparing requested 'mtu' to
'RTE_ETHER_MTU'.
Removing this additional configuration for simplification.

There is a confusion on setting max Rx packet length, this patch aims to
clarify it.
'rte_eth_dev_configure()' API accepts max Rx packet size via
'uint32_t max_rx_pkt_len' field of the config struct 'struct
rte_eth_conf'.
Also 'rte_eth_dev_set_mtu()' API can be used to set the MTU, and result
stored into '(struct rte_eth_dev)->data->mtu'.
These two APIs are related but they work in a disconnected way, they
store the set values in different variables which makes hard to figure
out which one to use, also having two different method for a related
functionality is confusing for the users.
Other issues causing confusion is:
* maximum transmission unit (MTU) is payload of the Ethernet frame. And
'max_rx_pkt_len' is the size of the Ethernet frame. Difference is
Ethernet frame overhead, and this overhead may be different from
device to device based on what device supports, like VLAN and QinQ.
* 'max_rx_pkt_len' is only valid when application requested jumbo frame,
which adds additional confusion and some APIs and PMDs already
discards this documented behavior.
* For the jumbo frame enabled case, 'max_rx_pkt_len' is an mandatory
field, this adds configuration complexity for application.
As solution, both APIs gets MTU as parameter, and both saves the result
in same variable '(struct rte_eth_dev)->data->mtu'. For this
'max_rx_pkt_len' updated as 'mtu', and it is always valid independent
from jumbo frame.
For 'rte_eth_dev_configure()', 'dev->data->dev_conf.rxmode.mtu' is user
request and it should be used only within configure function and result
should be stored to '(struct rte_eth_dev)->data->mtu'. After that point
both application and PMD uses MTU from this variable.
When application doesn't provide an MTU during 'rte_eth_dev_configure()'
default 'RTE_ETHER_MTU' value is used.
Additional clarification done on scattered Rx configuration, in
relation to MTU and Rx buffer size.
MTU is used to configure the device for physical Rx/Tx size limitation,
Rx buffer is where to store Rx packets, many PMDs use mbuf data buffer
size as Rx buffer size.
PMDs compare MTU against Rx buffer size to decide enabling scattered Rx
or not. If scattered Rx is not supported by device, MTU bigger than Rx
buffer size should fail.

Once it has been determined that an example cannot be built, there is
little point in continuing to process the meson.build file for that
example, so we can use subdir_done() to return to the calling file.
This can potentially prevent problems where later statement in the file
may cause an error on systems where the app cannot be built, e.g. on
Windows or FreeBSD.

Replace master lcore with main lcore and
replace slave lcore with worker lcore.
Keep the old functions and macros but mark them as deprecated
for this release.
The "--master-lcore" command line option is also deprecated
and any usage will print a warning and use "--main-lcore"
as replacement.

Rather than setting -Bstatic in the linker flags when doing a static link,
and then having to explicitly set -Bdynamic again afterwards, we can update
the pkg-config file to use -l:libfoo.a syntax to explicitly refer to the
static library in question. Since this syntax is not supported by meson's
pkg-config module directly, we can post-process the .pc files instead to
adjust them.
Once done, we can simplify the examples' makefiles and the docs by removing
the explicit static flag.

When printf()'s stdout is line-buffered for terminal, it is fully
buffered for pipes. So, stdout listener can only get the output
when it is flushed (on program termination, when buffer is filled or
manual flush).
stdout buffer might fill slowly since every stats report could be small.
Also when it is fully filled it might contain a part of the last stats
report which makes it very inconvenient for any automation which reads
and parses the output.

During MTU set (kni_change_mtu) sample application setup queues, which
can free and re-allocate queues.
Meanwhile sample application keeps continues in Rx/Tx burst calls in
different threads, which may cause crash during queue setup.
Pausing application Rx/Tx calls before MTU set and starts it back
afterwards.

Some versions of pkg-config don't support the --path flag, which is not a
fatal error when building the apps. Without the flag, the makefile just
cannot track the .pc file of DPDK as a dependency of the build. Therefore,
we can ignore the error and suppress it by redirecting to /dev/null the
stderr from that call to pkg-config.

Not all versions of pkg-config in distros have support for the
--define-prefix flag [1], causing errors when building examples manually or
with test-meson-builds.sh script [2].
For the former case, we need to remove the hard-coded use of the flag in
the Makefiles.
For the latter case, the flag is necessary for builds to succeed, so we
skip the tests when it's not present, passing it as part of the pkg-config
command if it is supported.

Starting with kernel version 4.10, there are new min/max MTU values in
net_device structure, which are set to ETH_MIN_MTU and ETH_DATA_LEN by
default. We should be able to change these values to allow MTU more than
1500 to be set on KNI.

Current design requires kernel drivers and they need to be probed by
Linux up to some level so that they can be usable by DPDK for ethtool
support, this requires maintaining the Linux drivers in DPDK.
Also ethtool support is limited and hard, if not impossible, to expand
to other PMDs.
Since KNI ethtool support is not used commonly, if not used at all,
removing the support for the sake of simplicity and maintenance.

The "make clean" command had a number of issues:
- the "--ignore-fail-on-non-empty" flag is not present on BSD
- the call to remove the build folder would fail if there was no build
folder present.
These are fixed by only removing the build folder if it exists, and by
using -p flag to rmdir in place of --ignore-fail-on-non-empty

Most examples have in their makefiles a default RTE_TARGET directory to be
used in case RTE_TARGET is not set. Rather than just using a hard-coded
default, we can instead detect what the build directory is relative to
RTE_SDK directory.
This fixes a potential issue for anyone who continues to build using
"make install T=x86_64-native-linuxapp-gcc" and skips setting RTE_TARGET
explicitly, instead relying on the fact that they were building in a
directory which corresponded to the example default path - which was
changed to "x86_64-native-linux-gcc" by commit 218c4e68c1 ("mk: use
linux and freebsd in config names").

Rather than using linuxapp and bsdapp everywhere, we can change things to
use the, more readable, terms "linux" and "freebsd" in our build configs.
Rather than renaming the configs we can just duplicate the existing ones
with the new names using symlinks, and use the new names exclusively
internally. ["make showconfigs" also only shows the new names to keep the
list short] The result is that backward compatibility is kept fully but any
new builds or development can be done using the newer names, i.e. both
"make config T=x86_64-native-linuxapp-gcc" and "T=x86_64-native-linux-gcc"
work.

When KNI interface receives RTE_KNI_REQ_CFG_NETWORK_IF request, it
stap/start the physical device which as a result of stop() can free all
the mbufs in its queue.
Meanwhile sample application continues to read from KNI interface queues
and push into device queues. This simultaneous access may cause a crash,
crash log can be found at defect description.
As a solution KNI sample application can do the proper synchronization,
and stop transfer between KNI interface and physical interface while
physical device stop/started.

The worker threads incrementing the rx/tx_packets race with the signal
handler from the main thread zeroing the entire statistics structure.
This can cause the statistics to fail to be zeroed, even when there
is no traffic on those interfaces.
Improve zeroing the statistics by only incrementing rx/tx_packets
in worker threads by a non-zero amount. This limits the race to the
periods in which traffic is actually being received or transmitted.

Update KNI example to add the command line flag '-m' to enable
a function to continuously monitor the Ethernet link status of
the physical link and update the link status of the corresponding
interfaces with rte_kni_update_link().

Removed DEV_RX_OFFLOAD_CRC_STRIP offload flag.
Without any specific Rx offload flag, default behavior by PMDs is to
strip CRC.
PMDs that support keeping CRC should advertise DEV_RX_OFFLOAD_KEEP_CRC
Rx offload capability.
Applications that require keeping CRC should check PMD capability first
and if it is supported can enable this feature by setting
DEV_RX_OFFLOAD_KEEP_CRC in Rx offload flag in rte_eth_dev_configure()

Rather than hard-coding the example app to be built only when a set of
conditions are met, we can simplify things by having the app built when
KNI library itself is available. That saves us duplicating the same set
of restrictions on both library and example app.

Some Makefiles are using CONFIG_RTE_EXEC_ENV and others
are using CONFIG_RTE_EXEC_ENV_LINUXAPP.
Use the latter one for consistency.
We could remove CONFIG_RTE_EXEC_ENV later if considered useless.

In DPDK 17.11, the ethdev offloads API has changed:

- All offloads are disabled by default
- Distinction between per port and per queue offloads.
The transition bits are now removed:
- Translation of the old API in ethdev

- ETH_TXQ_FLAGS_IGNORE
The old API bits are now removed:
- Rx per-port rte_eth_conf.rxmode.[bit-fields]
- Tx per-queue rte_eth_txconf.txq_flags
- ETH_TXQ_FLAGS_NO*

The basic operations for ports enumeration should not be
considered as experimental in DPDK 18.05.
The iterator RTE_ETH_FOREACH_DEV was introduced in DPDK 17.05.
It uses the function the rte_eth_find_next_owned_by() to get
only ownerless ports. Its API can be considered stable.
So the flag experimental is removed from rte_eth_find_next_owned_by().
The flag experimental is removed from rte_eth_dev_count_avail()
which is the new name of the old function rte_eth_dev_count().
The flag experimental is set to rte_eth_dev_count_total()
in the .c file for consistency with the declaration in the .h file.
A lot of internal applications are fixed to not allow experimental API.
