Newer compilers (gcc 10.x) shipped with, e.g., Clearlinux, Fedora32, will simply fail upon hitting this error. Ignore it. CPPFLAGS is used since CFLAGS would override its default options defined in a Makefile breaking compilation on older gccs as a result.
