Switch the vm_object mutex to be a rwlock. This will enable in the future further optimizations where the vm_object lock will be held in read mode most of the time the page cache resident pool of pages are accessed for reading purposes. The change is mostly mechanical but few notes are reported: * The KPI changes as follow: - VM_OBJECT_LOCK() -> VM_OBJECT_WLOCK() - VM_OBJECT_TRYLOCK() -> VM_OBJECT_TRYWLOCK() - VM_OBJECT_UNLOCK() -> VM_OBJECT_WUNLOCK() - VM_OBJECT_LOCK_ASSERT(MA_OWNED) -> VM_OBJECT_ASSERT_WLOCKED() (in order to avoid visibility of implementation details) - The read-mode operations are added: VM_OBJECT_RLOCK(), VM_OBJECT_TRYRLOCK(), VM_OBJECT_RUNLOCK(), VM_OBJECT_ASSERT_RLOCKED(), VM_OBJECT_ASSERT_LOCKED() * The vm/vm_pager.h namespace pollution avoidance (forcing requiring sys/mutex.h in consumers directly to cater its inlining functions using VM_OBJECT_LOCK()) imposes that all the vm/vm_pager.h consumers now must include also sys/rwlock.h. * zfs requires a quite convoluted fix to include FreeBSD rwlocks into the compat layer because the name clash between FreeBSD and solaris versions must be avoided. Refactor a bunch of scheduler code to give basically the same behaviour but with slightly cleaned up interfaces. The KSE structure has become the same as the "per thread scheduler private data" structure. In order to not make the diffs too great one is #defined as the other at this time. The KSE (or td_sched) structure is now allocated per thread and has no allocation code of its own. Concurrency for a KSEGRP is now kept track of via a simple pair of counters rather than using KSE structures as tokens. Since the KSE structure is different in each scheduler, kern_switch.c is now included at the end of each scheduler. Nothing outside the scheduler knows the contents of the KSE (aka td_sched) structure. The fields in the ksegrp structure that are to do with the scheduler's queueing mechanisms are now moved to the kg_sched structure. (per ksegrp scheduler private data structure). In other words how the scheduler queues and keeps track of threads is no-one's business except the scheduler's. This should allow people to write experimental schedulers with completely different internal structuring. A scheduler call sched_set_concurrency(kg, N) has been added that notifies teh scheduler that no more than N threads from that ksegrp should be allowed to be on concurrently scheduled. This is also used to enforce 'fainess' at this time so that a ksegrp with 10000 threads can not swamp a the run queue and force out a process with 1 thread, since the current code will not set the concurrency above NCPU, and both schedulers will not allow more than that many onto the system run queue at a time. Each scheduler should eventualy develop their own methods to do this now that they are effectively separated. Rejig libthr's kernel interface to follow the same code paths as linkse for scope system threads. This has slightly hurt libthr's performance but I will work to recover as much of it as I can. Thread exit code has been cleaned up greatly. exit and exec code now transitions a process back to 'standard non-threaded mode' before taking the next step. Update ZFS from version 6 to 13 and bring some FreeBSD-specific changes. This bring huge amount of changes, I'll enumerate only user-visible changes: - Delegated Administration Allows regular users to perform ZFS operations, like file system creation, snapshot creation, etc. - L2ARC Level 2 cache for ZFS - allows to use additional disks for cache. Huge performance improvements mostly for random read of mostly static content. - slog Allow to use additional disks for ZFS Intent Log to speed up operations like fsync(2). - vfs.zfs.super_owner Allows regular users to perform privileged operations on files stored on ZFS file systems owned by him. Very careful with this one. - chflags(2) Not all the flags are supported. This still needs work. - ZFSBoot Support to boot off of ZFS pool. Not finished, AFAIK. Submitted by: dfr - Snapshot properties - New failure modes Before if write requested failed, system paniced. Now one can select from one of three failure modes: - panic - panic on write error - wait - wait for disk to reappear - continue - serve read requests if possible, block write requests - Refquota, refreservation properties Just quota and reservation properties, but don't count space consumed by children file systems, clones and snapshots. - Sparse volumes ZVOLs that don't reserve space in the pool. - External attributes Compatible with extattr(2). - NFSv4-ACLs Not sure about the status, might not be complete yet. Commit the 64-bit inode project. Extend the ino_t, dev_t, nlink_t types to 64-bit ints. Modify struct dirent layout to add d_off, increase the size of d_fileno to 64-bits, increase the size of d_namlen to 16-bits, and change the required alignment. Increase struct statfs f_mntfromname[] and f_mntonname[] array length MNAMELEN to 1024. ABI breakage is mitigated by providing compatibility using versioned symbols, ingenious use of the existing padding in structures, and by employing other tricks. Unfortunately, not everything can be fixed, especially outside the base system. For instance, third-party APIs which pass struct stat around are broken in backward and forward incompatible ways. Kinfo sysctl MIBs ABI is changed in backward-compatible way, but there is no general mechanism to handle other sysctl MIBS which return structures where the layout has changed. It was considered that the breakage is either in the management interfaces, where we usually allow ABI slip, or is not important. Struct xvnode changed layout, no compat shims are provided. For struct xtty, dev_t tty device member was reduced to uint32_t. It was decided that keeping ABI compat in this case is more useful than reporting 64-bit dev_t, for the sake of pstat. Update note: strictly follow the instructions in UPDATING. Build and install the new kernel with COMPAT_FREEBSD11 option enabled, then reboot, and only then install new world.
