dynamic nature (if no native aio code is available, the linux part
returns ENOSYS because of missing requisites) should be solved differently
than it is.
All this will be done in P4.
Not included in this commit is a backout of the changes to the native aio
code (removing static in some places). Those changes (and some more) will
also be needed when the reworked linux aio stuff will reenter the tree.

The former has been fixed for arches that implement high-res profiling,
and the latter has been useless for kernel profiling since gcc-3.4
when it started forcing -fno-inline. -fno-inline gives a kernel with
performance characteristics too different from a normal kernel to be
worth profiling, by turning off inlining of all the little optimized
functions in headers. This interacts especially badly with FreeBSD's
use of "static inline" for all inlines in headers, by creating many
separate copies of the little functions, so not inlining tends to
increase cache pressure where it should reduce it, and (since gprof(1)
doesn't understand the copies) the statistics for the little functions
are hard to interpret even if you want them.
to and from struct timespec, to replace the crummy conversion
function which have been copy&pasted into three different
filesystems already.
Apart from general crummyness as indicated by code like:

They also contain specialized crummyness which tries to compensate
for the general crummyness by caching recent conversion results,
with no regard for locking or consistency.
These replacement functions are smaller, O(1) and handle the Y2.1K
leap-year correctly.
Ideally, these functions should live in a module of their own,
which the three offending filesystems would depend on, but the
size is 877 bytes of code (on i386), so that would be false
economy.
should be easily adapted to SD 2.0 (aka SDHC), SDIO, MMC and MMCplus
cards. At the present time, there's only one bridge driver for the
ARM9 based Atmel AT91RM9200.
snd_emu10k1 and snd_emu10kx into one line. The 'pci' dependency here
adds no value, so I eliminted it (we don't have a snd.all file that
might make it mildly useful, and even then it wouldn't be that
useful). With the pci optional component eliminated, I could use the
'|' operator. I could have also include pci on both sides of the |
operator, but since it isn't a value add at all, it was better to
eliminate it.
Implement the linux_io_* syscalls (AIO). They are only enabled if the native
AIO code is available (either compiled in to the kernel or as a module) at
the time the functions are used. If the AIO stuff is not available there
will be a ENOSYS.

1. Linux permits a process to own multiple AIO queues (distinguished by
"context"), but FreeBSD creates only one single AIO queue per process.
My code maintains a request queue (STAILQ of queue(3)) per "context",
and throws all AIO requests of all contexts owned by a process into
the single FreeBSD per-process AIO queue.
When the process calls io_destroy(2), io_getevents(2), io_submit(2) and
io_cancel(2), my code can pick out requests owned by the specified context
from the single FreeBSD per-process AIO queue according to the per-context
request queues maintained by my code.
2. The request queue maintained by my code stores contrast information between
Linux IO control blocks (struct linux_iocb) and FreeBSD IO control blocks
(struct aiocb). FreeBSD IO control block actually exists in userland memory
space, required by FreeBSD native aio_XXXXXX(2).
3. It is quite troubling that the function io_getevents() of libaio-0.3.105
needs to use Linux-specific "struct aio_ring", which is a partial mirror
of context in user space. I would rather take the address of context in
kernel as the context ID, but the io_getevents() of libaio forces me to
take the address of the "ring" in user space as the context ID.
To my surprise, one comment line in the file "io_getevents.c" of
libaio-0.3.105 reads:

With the first part of my previous Summer of Code work, we get:

After a buildworld, do a 'mergemaster -i' to install the file libalias.conf
in /etc or manually copy it.
During startup (and after every HUP signal) user land applications running
the new libalias will try to read a file in /etc called libalias.conf:
that file contains the list of modules to load.
User land applications affected by this commit are ppp and natd:
if libalias.conf is present in /etc you won't notice any difference.
The only kernel land bit affected by this commit is ng_nat:
if you are using ng_nat, and it doesn't correctly handle
ftp/irc/etcetc sessions anymore, remember to kldload
the correspondent module (i.e. kldload alias_ftp).

- Split out the communication protocols into their own files and use
a couple of function pointers in the softc that the commuication
protocols setup in their own attach routine.
- Add support for the SSIF interface (talking to IPMI over SMBus).
- Add an ACPI attachment.
- Add a PCI attachment that attaches to devices with the IPMI interface
subclass.
- Split the ISA attachment out into its own file: ipmi_isa.c.
- Change the code to probe the SMBIOS table for an IPMI entry to just use
pmap_mapbios() to map the table in rather than trying to setup a fake
resource on an isa device and then activating the resource to map in the
table.
- Make bus attachments leaner by adding attach functions for each
communication interface (ipmi_kcs_attach(), ipmi_smic_attach(), etc.)
that setup per-interface data.
- Formalize the model used by the driver to handle requests by adding an
explicit struct ipmi_request object that holds the state of a given
request and reply for the entire lifetime of the request. By bundling
the request into an object, it is easier to add retry logic to the various
communication backends (as well as eventually support BT mode which uses
a slightly different message format than KCS, SMIC, and SSIF).
- Add a per-softc lock and remove D_NEEDGIANT as the driver is now MPSAFE.
- Add 32-bit compatibility ioctl shims so you can use a 32-bit ipmitool
on FreeBSD/amd64.
- Add ipmi(4) to i386 and amd64 NOTES.

the address space available for user processes a bit, but given the amount of

It then provides a uma_small_alloc() that works as it does for architectures

uipc_proto.c to uipc_usrreq.c, making localdomain static. Remove
uipc_proto.c as it's no longer used. With this change, UNIX domain
sockets are entirely encapsulated in uipc_usrreq.c.
PowerPC-based Apple's machines and small utility to do it from
userland modelled after the similar utility in Darwin/OSX.

for those upgrading from 4.x -> 5.x. It is therefore no longer
necessary because it is installed on 5.x and 6.x and one has to
upgrade from 6.x -> current, or at the very least 5.x (although not
supported, it can be made to work).
I picked it up again. The scheduler is forked from ULE, but the
algorithm to detect an interactive process is almost completely
different with ULE, it comes from Linux paper "Understanding the
Linux 2.6.8.1 CPU Scheduler", although I still use same word
"score" as a priority boost in ULE scheduler.
Briefly, the scheduler has following characteristic:
1. Timesharing process's nice value is seriously respected,
timeslice and interaction detecting algorithm are based
on nice value.
2. per-cpu scheduling queue and load balancing.
3. O(1) scheduling.
4. Some cpu affinity code in wakeup path.
5. Support POSIX SCHED_FIFO and SCHED_RR.
Unlike scheduler 4BSD and ULE which using fuzzy RQ_PPQ, the scheduler
uses 256 priority queues. Unlike ULE which using pull and push, the
scheduelr uses pull method, the main reason is to let relative idle
cpu do the work, but current the whole scheduler is protected by the
big sched_lock, so the benefit is not visible, it really can be worse
than nothing because all other cpu are locked out when we are doing
balancing work, which the 4BSD scheduelr does not have this problem.
The scheduler does not support hyperthreading very well, in fact,
the scheduler does not make the difference between physical CPU and
logical CPU, this should be improved in feature. The scheduler has
priority inversion problem on MP machine, it is not good for
realtime scheduling, it can cause realtime process starving.
As a result, it seems the MySQL super-smack runs better on my
Pentium-D machine when using libthr, despite on UP or SMP kernel.
- Try hard to calculate a safe sp, so that the stack doesn't get smashed
while uncompressing or relocating the kernel.
- Bring in code needed to calculate the cacheline size etc, needed for
arm9_idcache_wbinv_all.
for CBUS-PNP cards there) by default, as there are no amd64 and sparc64
machines with ISA slots and which therefore could make use of this code
known to exist. For sparc64 this additionally allows to get rid of the

This is old code, it's not maintained since 2003. We also don't have a
maintainer for this! Yuriy Tsibizov took it and uses it in his emu10kx
driver. Since the emu10kx driver will enter the tree "soon" (some bugs
have to be fixed after Yuriy return from his holidays), I add it here
already.
This also contains some changes to emu10k1 and cmi, so if you're lucky,
you can now make some kind of use of midi with those soundcards.
To all those poor souls which don't have such a card: feel free to send
patches, we don't have a maintainer for this.

- Linux ioctl support, with the other Linux changes MegaCli
will run if you mount linprocfs & linsysfs then set
sysctl compat.linux.osrelease=2.6.12 or similar. This works
on i386. It should work on amd64 but not well tested yet.
StoreLib may or may not work. Remember to kldload mfi_linux.
- Add in AEN (Async Event Notification) support so we can
get messages from the firmware when something happens.
Not all messages are in defined in event detail. Use
event_log to try to figure out what happened.
- Try to implement something like SIGIO for StoreLib. Since
mrmonitor doesn't work right I can't fully test it. StoreLib
works best with the rh9 base. In theory mrmonitor isn't
needed due to native driver support of AEN :-)
Now we can configure and monitor the RAID better.

lnc(4) on PC98 and i386. The ISA front-end supports the same non-PNP
network cards as lnc(4) did and additionally a couple of PNP ones.
Like lnc(4), the C-bus front-end of le(4) only supports C-NET(98)S
and is untested due to lack of such hardware, but given that's it's
based on the respective lnc(4) and not too different from the ISA
front-end it should be highly likely to work.
- Remove the descriptions of le(4), which where converted from lnc(4),
from sys/i386/conf/NOTES and sys/pc98/conf/NOTES as there's a common
one in sys/conf/NOTES.
Add a new option, SKYEYE_WORKAROUNDS, which as the name suggests adds
workarounds for things skyeye doesn't simulate. Specifically :
- Use USART0 instead of DBGU as the console, make it not use DMA, and manually provoke an interrupt when we're done in the transmit function.
- Skyeye maintains an internal counter for clock, but apparently there's
no way to access it, so hack the timecounter code to return a value which
is increased at every clock interrupts. This is gross, but I didn't find a
better way to implement timecounters without hacking Skyeye to get the
counter value.
- Force the write-back of PTEs once we're done writing them, even if they
are supposed to be write-through. I don't know why I have to do that.
When porting FreeBSD to a new platform, one of the more useful things to do is
get mi_startup() to let you know which SYSINIT it's up to. Most people tend to
whack a printf in the SYSINIT loop to print the address of the function it's
about to call. Going one better, jhb made a version that uses DDB to look up
the name of the function and print that instead. This version is essentially
his with the addition of some ifdeffery to make it optional and to allow it to
work (although using only the function address, not the symbol) if you forgot
to enable DDB.

The changes are minor enough for conditional compilation and
in this form invites better abstraction.

Major differences:
* since there is no direct map region, there is no custom uma memory
allocator to modify to include its pages in the dumps.
* Various data entries are reduced from 64 bit to 32 bit to match the
native size.
dump_add_page() and dump_drop_page() are still present in case one wants to
arrange for arbitary pages to be dumped. This is of marginal use though
because libkvm+kgdb cannot address physical memory that isn't mapped into
kvm.
via the debug.minidump sysctl and tunable.
Traditional dumps store all physical memory. This was once a good thing
when machines had a maximum of 64M of ram and 1GB of kvm. These days,
machines often have many gigabytes of ram and a smaller amount of kvm.
libkvm+kgdb don't have a way to access physical ram that is not mapped
into kvm at the time of the crash dump, so the extra ram being dumped
is mostly wasted.
Minidumps invert the process. Instead of dumping physical memory in
in order to guarantee that all of kvm's backing is dumped, minidumps
instead dump only memory that is actively mapped into kvm.
amd64 has a direct map region that things like UMA use. Obviously we
cannot dump all of the direct map region because that is effectively
an old style all-physical-memory dump. Instead, introduce a bitmap
and two helper routines (dump_add_page(pa) and dump_drop_page(pa)) that
allow certain critical direct map pages to be included in the dump.
uma_machdep.c's allocator is the intended consumer.
Dumps are a custom format. At the very beginning of the file is a header,
then a copy of the message buffer, then the bitmap of pages present in
the dump, then the final level of the kvm page table trees (2MB mappings
are expanded into a 4K page mappings), then the sparse physical pages
according to the bitmap. libkvm can now conveniently access the kvm
page table entries.
Booting my test 8GB machine, forcing it into ddb and forcing a dump
leads to a 48MB minidump. While this is a best case, I expect minidumps
to be in the 100MB-500MB range. Obviously, never larger than physical
memory of course.
minidumps are on by default. It would want be necessary to turn them off
if it was necessary to debug corrupt kernel page table management as that
would mess up minidumps as well.
Both minidumps and regular dumps are supported on the same machine.

- Create audit_worker_init() from relevant parts of audit_init(),
which now calls this routine.
- Recreate audit_free(), which wraps uma_zfree() so that
audit_record_zone can be static to audit.c.
- Unstaticize various types and variables relating to the audit
record queue so that audit_worker can get to them. We may want
to wrap these in accessor methods at some point.
- Move AUDIT_PRINTF() to audit_private.h.
Addition of audit_worker.c to kernel configuration, missed in
earlier submit.
