ba034263ba Don't stop /etc/sysconfig if we're `faking'. 
More asthetic adjustments to menus.
Improve both the display efficiency and usability of the label
screen - it's now possible to label quite a few disks in the label editor.

35ee5f3e57 Fix display refresh bug in displayHelp() 
Go back to Normal menus for Media and FTP menus rather than
radio menus - the difference in behavior is confusing and sort
of detracts from the added (small) advantage of seeing what you last
picked.

18b1c03d52 Quite a few changes: 
1. Fix the last display bugs (I hope) by use of dialog rebuilds at stategic
   points.
2. Clean up the distributions menus so that everybody (that's reasonable)
   has All and Clear options for setting/clearing things en-masse.
3. Various attempts at display optimization.
4. Change the wording of the `Don't use Write!' dialogs to make them more
   explicitly define when and when not to use the option.

2113a60c4b Bring this into sync. 
I still have a _very very annoying_ display bug which occurs when a menu
item causes a submenu to be displayed - the screen repaints for the original
menu (which is restored upon return from the submenu) are off by about 4
characters.  I've tried restoring the screen, the cursor position, you name
it - same deal.  Grrrr!  This commit is my first step in trying to get someone
else to help me look into this one since I'm just tearing my hair out at this
point!

957bdf511e Major surgery. 
1. Use new dialog menu hacks (no strings, just arrays of dialogMenuItem structs)
   so that I can create composite menus with radio/checkbox/... items in them,
   removing some long-standing UI bogons in various menus.  This work isn't
   finished yet, but will be done in two phases.  This is phase one.

2. Remove all the script installation stuff.  I never got time to document it,
   it was arcane and it just complicated much of the code.  There are better
   ways of doing this if I want to do auto-driven installations later.

3. Remove much dead code and otherwise attempt to remove as much historical
   grot as possible so that this code is easier to hack on.  This is also
   a two-stage process, phase one of which is now complete.

948aa2a132 Rename the usage of private' to private_data' to cope with the 
recent libdisk changes.  (sysinstall is guilty of using `private' in
quite more places, but since this ain't in library code, it's not that
important.)

Whenever possible, better not use C++ reserved words...

40ae4689df Lots of fixes: 
1. Revamp package installer to use new dependency lists and also
   pkg_add's new `read from stdin' mode to prevent a copy of the package
   from hitting the disk unnecessarily.

2. More fixes for running "not as init" - don't get upset if CDROM already
   mounted, do the right thing instead.

3. If running as init, assume first-time install and _don't show the
   (W)rite option in the fdisk screen.

4. Many other little tweaks, some of which will have to wait for fuller testing
   until I can create a boot floppy (testing certain system-destroying
   features of sysinstall can be a royal pain).  Expect some more commits.

2fb96ab9ba Create symlinks for the MD5 libcrypt's in the bindist. 
Jordan, this and my previous commit to lib/Makefile should
re-establish the libcrypt for our releases now. :-)

Well, not sure, perhaps init(8) is linked against the wrong libcrypt
in the bindist. :-(

1117d2af7a Make the reduction algorithm to tune the file system size less 
aggressive, in order to avoid /mnt: file system full problems.

Introduce a deadlock counter.

Turn off echoing again, it's cluttering the screen/log.

Gross hack to avoid the `vn0: invalid primary partition table: no magic'
warning.

Seems that doFS.sh is now doing the job...

288fe4dbdf Moved doFS into shell-script so we can be more smart about it. 
make two boot floppies, one without help files for 4MB systems.
Mine's loading one now. :-)  -O2 may be needed.

2838466c09 Check in the shell scripts I used for the 2.1-RELEASE CDROM. These 
are provided simply as easy short-cuts for users who are prowling through
the dists structure and decide to install something directly from there.

There still needs to be some glue stuck into release/Makefile to copy
these into the appropriate homes following a full `make release', but I'll
wait until phk is done in there.

5afba5f938 Use partition `a' for the vn device. Also vn-unconfig the vn device 
after usage.

I think this has been the last show-stopper that prevented me from doing
a successful ``make release''.  Jordan, go for the 2.2-SNAP! :)

d95793c934 Hopefully the last bogons that prevented me from running a successful 
`make release':

. the `doc' distribution was missing, so the FAQ and handbook files
  couldn't be installed (Q: why did the psd etc. files install, only
  that the dirs had the wrong ownership?)

. the crunched binaries do need now -lipx

b7738481bc 2.1.0R is over and out. Comment out the tags for it from the release 
Makefile (so release builds in -current require to set it from the
command line).

Make the cleanup of ${CHROOTDIR} non-fatal.  Otherwise, it stops
immediately if the ${CHROTDIR} is on a separately mounted file system.

aff85b5385 Deal with the case where an FTP connection has been left so long, it 
times out.

Make sure that anon ftp's home directory exists before calling adduser
or it (adduser) will have kittens.

1babea36ca Lots-o-cleanup(tm): 
1. Fix the bogon I introduced that made some root filesystems fail to be
   made with `unable to make filesystem on sd1s1a' or some such error
   message.

2. Latest installment in the never-ending chapter on making FTP do the right
   thing on a cruel internet.

3. Make `express install' a truly express install and split off what it used
   to do into a `novice install' that's even more geared to the novice
   by asking questions in order, rather than forcing them through the menu
   interface.

4. Make anonymous FTP setup truly DTRT.

5. Build lndir directly into sysinstall and make the novice install offer
   to set up the ports tree.  Also make the ports setup truly explanatory
   about what it's doing, and always link the ports destination to /usr/ports
   if necessary so that bsd.port.mk doesn't need to be tweaked.

b462d27c89 Style changes. Clear the screen before a lot of error dialogs so that they 
don't bogusly restore the screen to the message that was the cause of the
abort.  That resulted in lots of weird flickering dialog boxes that appeared
to be displayed out of sequence.

7dace4c581 1. Of course, the day after you roll the snapshots is the day you realize 
that the FTP install doesn't deal with timeouts and hasn't since it was
   written.  Fixed.

2. Totally eliminate the OptionFlags.  I only had to work harder to
   sync them with configuration variables, so why not simply always use
   configuration variables?  This has actually greatly simplified areas
   of the code.

adfab64be5 Some rethinks on the way the attribute interface worked (now that 
I'm really, truly using it).  Allow distribution fetch to get .info
files from the root.flp OR the distribution in question, allowing us
to add flexibility to the scheme.  At some point, perhaps soon, the
cached copy should probably go away entirely!

a9b434857b Minor tweak: Change name of "Master partition editor" to "FDISK partition 
editor" here and in the docs.  People have come to understand "FDISK"
as a more generic term and have been complaining that they didn't
equate the "master" partition editor with the old fdisk stage and were
confused.

e68b53ea5f It took a non-native speaker of English to show me that I couldn't 
speak english.  In this doc I say that "2.0.5 fills a much needed
gap between 2.0R and 2.1."  No wonder the translators were confused!
I'm trying to say that we _wanted_ a gap between 2.0.5 and 2.1?  That
such gaps are much needed?  Wurgh!  Not what I was trying to say at
all!  It should have (and now does) read: "2.0.5 fills a critical
gap between 2.0R and 2.1."  Critical gap, not much needed. :-)
Translators:  You may wish to adjust your own translations as
well if you tried to translate my original botch!  Send me diffs
as soon as you can.  Thanks!

9faa4e6750 My first round at all the help files needed explicitly by various menus. 
Folks - please review these!  I'm quite sleepy at the moment, and I'm
sure that some of this could be worded better.  I'd like to have at least
a reasonable syntax pass over this before handing it off to the translation
folks!  Thanks!  Feel free to commit any changes directly if it's any time
in the next 8 hours, BTW. I won't mind since I'll be asleep!

b82e26f63a Increase size of MFS filesystem. (You need to remake release.3) 
Remove unused devices (*[sw]d*[bdefgh]).
Dont gzip boot_crunch. (This SAVES space on a 4 MB machine, since the
file can be segment can be paged from now.
This (with the kzip patch) makes a 4M machine boot and run again.
Margin in my build is 22 blocks and 9 inodes.
I will look at tgz'ing the help files, we need that.

25fce75ee4 Major cleanup. Mediaroutines now get asked about a file. All the 
multi part stuff centralized.
The final check is backwards or something so it always said it failed,
even it it didn't.

P.S.  As soon as I get the distfiles copied over to freefall tomorrow
morning, those of you wishing to test minimal installs over ftp should
be able to do so by grabbing the boot floppy and nothing else.  Keep
your eyes open for my announcement.

223705ba7e Totally revamp the TCP/IP dialog; now network selection makes a bit more sense. 
Root floppy (which actually may be able to go completely away at some point
soon!) is now loadable from ftp/nfs/dos as well as CDROM and (of course)
floppy.

8cb85ad4c4 The cpio floppy is dead. All hail the root floppy. 
Basically, this is just a simple name change.  People were historically
confused by the "cpio floppy", having no clear idea as to what it was
(even if they knew what "cpio" stood for) given that the name gives
one absolutely no indication as to what it's FOR.  It's about as content
free as calling it a "data floppy".  Root floppy isn't much better, but
it's got some historical weight (Linux divides their set into boot and
root floppies) and is reasonably descriptive for a floppy that comprises
the beginnings of a stand-alone root filesystem.

a098749d6b Bring everybody up to date on my morning's work. 
1. Fix a few bugs in the ftp installation code and implement proper
   ftp and network shutdown routines.

2. Clean up the menus a fair bit - add a FreeBSD configuration menu.

3. Eliminate the last of the "chaining" - the installation now does
   the most obvious thing in the most obvious cases and doesn't present
   you with more menus than you were expecting.  This makes it necessary to be
   a little more explicit in places, but it's still less confusing.

4. Add a few more safety nets for the user.  Change a few hard-and-fast
   limits to warnings (it now runs as non-root, Bruce).

5. Add descriptions for all the supported ethernet cards.

6. Make the cpio floppy extract put up a menu requesting the drive you wish
   to use if you have more than one; don't just always assume drive A.

7ccad8a96a 1. Bring in the first cut of Poul's ftp routines. We still don't 
use them yet, but it's close (we're working on the last wrinkles
   in the CD install for now).

cc1f1b8814 Don't clear the screen for every redraw in the disklabel and 
partition editors (ugh).  Fix an utterly bogus message (no arguments :)
in dist.c.  This should all make Poul a little happier and slide in
before the next CTM update window.

71502538f6 Misc cpio evil. I think I'm going to start working locally and just deal 
with the diff/CVS hassles - this represents far too many CVS commit
messages for you folks, and trying to document each and every iteration

8f1fd59b90 Fix the DOS discovery code to now re-allocate another virtual device if 
it's called multiple times in a row.  Add a new device type "DEVICE_TYPE_DOS"
so that we can look up an previous results.

f10eb488f6 1. Fix a pathological bug I introduced in msgInfo(). Right idea, wrong 
implementation.

2. Totally rework device registration.  It's about half the size and
   more powerful now.

3. Add DOS discovery.

4. Start filling in some of the strategy routines.

5. Another clean-up pass over the menus.

6. Make wizard code use Disk typedef.

If I can get the first strategy routine finished tonite, we should have a working
install (from ftp, at least) this weekend.

c10caaad51 1. Incorporate Nickolay's ammended patches for Russian screenmap support 
as per Andrey's letter.  Make a few modifications for correctness.

2. Add Language menu back to first menu - it was too buried in the
   Options menu.

3. Add size information to all distributions.

4. Add a compat20 distribution (we need to make one of these!!  Any takers?  Please?)

a1bfde73e4 Big Sigh. Both A_BOLD and A_UNDERLINE do not appear to work with 
syscons (and/or cons25) at all.  This code looked just fine running
on an xterm, but on a console the attributes are all wrong.  I
now have to sacrifice some screen real-estate to pring cheesy
`-' characters to accomplish the same thing.

f8230b2f5f Switch to bold on the header line - the A_UNDERLINE handling appears to be 
broken in syscons, or at least in the cons25 termcap entry! :-(  A_BOLD
won't show up on monochrome adapters (I don't think) but they'd be screwed
anyway since I don't have an attribute to use for them now at all.

9786c33e55 Poul says that setting fonts on monocrome displays is useless

2. Don't use russian screenmap - apparently not necessary with right font.
3. Dequote bogusly quoted font name in english language setting.
4. Use setterm() and hack around an undesirable side-effect (cbreak is unset).
5. be smarter about setting OnVTY, and use it in cases where it makes sense.

b2d228d3d7 This will now compile and even scribble helpfully on your disks. 
It remains to be seen how successfully.  The distribution loading code
is still not here yet, but the partition/newfs/mount/cpio-extract cycle
is as complete as it's ever going to get, modulo possible bug fixes.
The TCP/IP setup screen is also sort of here, albeit in a highly-changing
state due to the fact that per-interface information isn't being kept
right now but is being added (thanks, Gary!).

CHUNK_BAD144 slice.
Also mknod the 'c' partition for freebsd slices, so bad144(8) will have

682078bd09 Very minor rework to eliminate useage of - operator by checking for 
existance of ${CHROOTDIR}.

Remove -k option from make install for building chroot tree, makes it
error out early if you forgot to populate the pre-chroot obj tree.
