Replace the check for zero harvest_mask with new check for empty string.
This allows one to specify harvest_mask="0" that disables harversting
entropy from all but "pure" sources. Exact bit values for "pure" sources
differ for stable/12 and later branches, so it is handy to use zero.
The check for zero pre-dates introduction of "pure" non-maskable sources
Use empty string to disable altering sysctl kern.random.harvest.mask.
Note that notion of "pure" random sources is not documented in user level
manual pages yet. Still, it helps to extend battery life for hardware
with embedded "Intel Secure Key RNG" by disabling all other sources.
Note that no defaults changed and default behaviour is not affected.

/etc/rc.d/securelevel is supposed to run /etc/rc.d/sysctl lastload
late at boot time to apply /etc/sysctl.conf settings that fail
to apply early. However, this does not work in default configuration
because of kern_securelevel_enable="NO" by default.
Add new script /etc/rc.d/sysctl lastload that starts unconditionally.

Currently ipfw has multiple components that are not parts
of GENERIC kernel like dummynet etc. They can bring in important
sysctls if enabled with rc.conf(5) and loaded with ipfw startup script
by means of "required_modules" after initial consult
with /etc/sysctl.conf at boot time. Here is an example of one
increasing limit for dummynet hold queues that defaults to 100:
net.inet.ip.dummynet.pipe_slot_limit=1000
This makes it possible to use ipfw/dummynet rules such as:
ipfw pipe 1 config bw 50Mbit/s queue 1000
Such rule is rejected unless above sysctl is applied.
Another example is a group of net.inet.ip.alias.* sysctls
created after libalias.ko loaded as dependency of ipfw_nat.
This is not a problem if corresponding code compiled in custom kernel
so sysctls exist when sysctl.conf is read early or kernel modules
loaded with a loader. This change makes it work also for GENERIC
and modules loaded by means of rc.conf(5) settings.

rtld preserves its current error message around calls to user init/fini
lists, to not override original error with potential secondary errors
caused by user code recursing into rtld. After 4d9128da54,
the preservation of the string itself is not enough, the 'seen'
indicator must be preserved as well. Otherwise, since new code does not
clear string (it cannot), call to _rtld_error() from errmsg_restore()
revived whatever message was consumed last.
Change errmsg_save() to return structure recording both 'seen' indicator
and the message, if any.

It was unused since 405c3050f1, which removed iBCS support.
This also moves the 'linux' rc script slightly earlier, which
might help in some setups. The original version of this patch
moved it even more, before 'mountcritlocal', which would fixe
mount(8) errors due to missing /dev/shm in setups with entries
for /path/to/chroot/dev/shm without the "late" flag; however,
in the end 'kldxref' turned out to depend on 'mountcritlocal'
anyway.

Right now, libthr does not initialize RtldLockInfo.rtli_version when calling
_rtld_thread_init(), which makes versioning the interface troublesome.
Add a workaround: if the calling object of _rtld_thread_init() exports
the "_pli_rtli_version" symbol, then consider rtli_version initialized.
Otherwise, forcibly set it to RTLI_VERSION_ONE, currently defined as
RTLI_VERSION.

If the root file system is composed from multiple devices, wait for
devices to be ready before running zpool and dumpon rc scripts.
An example of this is if the bulk of the root file system exists on a
fast device (e.g. NVMe) but the /var directory comes from a ZFS dataset
on a slower device (e.g. SATA). In this case, it is possible that the
zpool import may run before the slower device has finished being probed,
leaving the system in an intermediate state.
Fix is to add root_hold_wait to the zpool and dumpon (which has a
similar issue) rc scripts.

The new PRELOAD_FDS variable accepts a list of file descriptors
that should be loaded into the process.
This may be used to optimize a loading process - in the case when
we already have a file descriptor to the library; we don't have
to look into multiple PATH to find it.
It may also be used in capability mode to load a single additional
library without the need to open a directory that contains it.
The last use of this functionality t may be a race-free method
of loading libraries.

Daniel reported that NFSv4 mounts were not working despite having
set "nfsv4_server_enable=YES" in /etc/rc.conf. Mountd was logging a
message that there was no /etc/exports file.
He noted that creating a /etc/exports file with a "V4:" line in it
was needed make NFSv4 mounts work.
At least one "V4:" line in one of the exports(5) file(s) is needed to
make NFSv4 mounts work. This patch fixes mountd.c so that it logs a
message indicting that there is no "V4:" line in any exports(5)
file when NFSv4 mounts are enabled.
To avoid this message being generated erroneously, /etc/rc.d/mountd
is updated to make sure vfs.nfsd.server_max_nfsvers is properly set
before mountd(8) is started.

of rc. It separated groups with line feeds (\n) and elements within
groups using spaces. This is a natural separation due to rcorder
using spaces and lines to separate elements within groups with groups
of services separated by line feeds.
77e1ccbee3 parses the output from rcorder
by setting $IFS. However it failed to reset $IFS to default ' \t\n'
prior to calling find_local_scripts_new(), causing find_local_scripts_new()
to fail parsing $local_startup for site-specific local rc scripts, i.e.
${LOCALBASE}/etc/rc.d. This caused daemons from ports and packages such
as postfix, dovecot, nut, and others in ${LOCALBASE} not to be started.

As of ipfilter 5.1.2 the IPv4 and IPv6 rules tables have been merged.
The ipf(8) -6 option has been a NOP since then. Currently the additional
ipf -6 load statement in rc.d/ipfilter simply added the second ipfilter
rules file to the table already populated by the previous ipf command.
Plenty of time has passed since ipfilter 5.1.2 was imported. It is time to
remove the option from rc.conf and the rc script.

This eliminates a lot of stat() calls that happen when lualoader renders the
menu with the default settings, and greatly speeds up rendering on my
laptop.
ftype is nil if loader/loader.efi hasn't been updated yet, falling back to
lfs.attributes() to test.
This is technically incompatible with lfs, but not in a particularly
terrible way.

In order to reduce the pre-requisites of this file, implement the
pattern matching and creation of a temporary test directory without
use of grep respectively mktemp.
The new version makes it possible to provide a writable /tmp in any
case and independently of other local or remote file systems (except /
and /dev) being mounted.
The use of "dd if=/dev/random" has the same dependency on /dev/random
being operational as the previous version that used "mktemp". If this
is found to be an issue on platforms that do not have gathered
sufficient entropy at the time when this scriot is run, I suggest to
replace the "dd" command with "ps lauxww" to get a somewhat random
test directory name.

Statically link rtld-elf with libcompiler_rt on all architectures so
that we don't need to try to pick and choose the bits we need from it
for each architecture (we now leave that to the linker). Compilers may
emit calls to support functions in this library, but because of the use
of the linker flag -nostdlib for rtld's special needs, the library is
not linked as normal.
Previously we had two different solutions. On some architectures, we
were able to extract reimplementations of the necessary builtin
functions from our special build of libc. On ARM, we just linked
libcompiler_rt.
This is motivated by the same issue as D26199 and D27665, but should be
a simpler solution that will apply to all architectures.

This fixes the gcc9 build of rtld-elf32 on amd64, which needed an
implementation of udivmoddi4.
rtld-elf uses certain functions normally found in libc, and so it
includes certain files from libc in its own build. It has two
mechanisms to include files from libc: one that rebuilds source files in
the rtld-elf environment, and one that extracts object files from a
purpose-built no-SSP PIC archive.
In addition to libc functions, rtld-elf may need to link functions
normally found in libcompiler_rt (formerly libgcc). Now, add an ability
to rebuild libcompiler_rt source files in the rtld-elf environment. We
don't yet have a need for an object file extraction mechanism.
libcompiler_rt could also supply udivdi3 and umoddi3, but leave them
alone for now.

Although it is not often needed, the nfscbd(8) should be running when
NFSv4 mounts are done if callback functionality is required.
Callback functionality is required for the NFSv4 server to issue
delegations or pNFS layouts.
This patch adds nfscbd to the mountcritremote's REQUIRED line
to ensure it is started before NFS mounts specified in /etc/fstab
are done.

r366857 created a number of problems, tearing down interfaces too
early in shutdown. This resulted in:
- hung ssh sessions when shutting down or rebooting remotely using
shutdown (I've used exec shutdown, for years, as apposed to simply
shutdown).
- NFS mounted filesystems "disappear" prior to unmount.
- dhclient attached to a VLAN on an interface who's parent interface
has already shut down prints errors.
The path forward is to teach lagg(4) and vlan(4) about WOL.

Enable ND6_IFF_IFDISABLED when the interface is created in the
kernel before return to user space.
This avoids a race when an interface is create by a program which
also calls ifconfig IF inet6 -ifdisabled and races with the
devd -> /etc/pccard_ether -> .. netif start IF -> ifdisabled
calls (the devd/rc framework disabling IPv6 again after the program
had enabled it already).
In case the global net.inet6.ip6.accept_rtadv was turned on,
we also default to enabling IPv6 on the interfaces, rather than
disabling them.

The problem is that zfs is asked to stop too early in the shutdown
sequence. Other services, such as syslog may still be running and have some
files open (e.g., under /var/log). This of course causes the messages like:
cannot unmount '/var/run': umount failed
cannot unmount '/var/log': umount failed
cannot unmount '/var': umount failed
cannot unmount '/usr/home': umount failed
cannot unmount '/usr': umount failed
cannot unmount '/': umount failed
For now, let's remove the shutdown KEYWORD from the zfs service, as people are

/usr file system was mounted.
He fixed the problem by adding mountcritlocal to the REQUIRED
line.
This fix seems safe and works for a separately mounted /usr file
system on a local disk.
The case of a separately mounted remote /usr file system (such as
NFS) is still broken, but there is no obvious solution for that.
Adding mountcritremote would fix the problem, but it would
cause a POLA violation, because all kerberized NFS mounts
in /etc/fstab would need the "late" option specified to work.

r376026 added a new "-R" option to mountd, which tells it to
not support the Mount protocol (not used by NFSv4) and not
register with rpcbind.
Rpcbind is considered a security issue by some sites now.
This patch adds a new yes/no variable called nfsv4_server_only.
When that is set, make vfs.nfsd.server_min_vers=4 and set "=R"
for mountd.
Setting vfs.nfsd.server_min_vers=4 tells nfsd to not register with rpcbind.
While here, add a check for "load_kld nfsd" failing to nfsd.

The variable defaults to "/usr/local", unless sysctl returns some other

The problem is that Without walling /etc/rc.d/zfs on shutdown, resources
associated with ZFS mounts are not freed and the jails will remain in dying
state. In addition, the dataset is now in a dangling state, as the jail it
is attached to is dying.
A known workaround for jails was to add the following lines
to /etc/jail.conf, to make sure that "service zfs stop" is run
when the jail is stopped:
exec.stop = "/bin/sh /etc/rc.shutdown";
exec.stop += "/usr/sbin/service zfs stop || /usr/bin/true";
While the workaround seems to be okay-ish for the jail situation, it is
still unclean. However, for physical hosts this may wreak havoc with the
pool if shared spares are used, as "zfs unshare" is never invoked on
shutdown.

When a system with pf_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf uses hostnames in
/etc/pf.conf, these hostnames cannot be resolved via external nameservers
because the default route is not yet set. This results in an empty
(all open) ruleset.
Since r195026 already put netif back to REQUIRE, this change does not affect
the issue that the firewall should rather have been setup before any
network traffic can occur.

bananas and introduced a WARNS=7 and wanted to try lifting the default to
that.
Drop most of them; there is one in the blake2 kernel module, but I suspect
it should be dropped -- the default WARNS in the rest of the build doesn't
currently apply to kernel modules, and I haven't put too much thought into
whether it makes sense to make it so.
Given that we have converted to ELFv2 for BE already, endianness is the only
difference between the two ARCHs.
As such, there is no need to differentiate LIBC_ARCH between the two.
Combining them like this lets us avoid needing to have two copies of several
bits for no good reason.

bootonce feature is temporary, one time boot, activated by
"bectl activate -t BE", "bectl activate -T BE" will reset the bootonce flag.
By default, the bootonce setting is reset on attempt to boot and the next
boot will use previously active BE.
By setting zfs_bootonce_activate="YES" in rc.conf, the bootonce BE will
be set permanently active.
bootonce dataset name is recorded in boot pool labels, bootenv area.
in case of nextboot, the nextboot_enable boolean variable is recorded in
freebsd:nvstore nvlist, also stored in boot pool label bootenv area.
On boot, the loader will process /boot/nextboot.conf if nextboot_enable
is "YES", and will set nextboot_enable to "NO", preventing /boot/nextboot.conf
processing on next boot.
bootonce and nextboot features are usable in both UEFI and BIOS boot.
To use bootonce/nextboot features, the boot loader needs to be updated on disk;
if loader.efi is stored on ESP, then ESP needs to be updated and
for BIOS boot, stage2 (zfsboot or gptzfsboot) needs to be updated
(gpart or other tools).

Currently, WITHOUT_PORTSNAP forces WITHOUT_FREEBSD_UPDATE because the
latter relies on phttpget, which lives inside the portsnap build bits.
Remove the dependency between these two options by moving phttpget out into
^/libexec and building/installing it if either WITH_PORTSNAP or
WITH_FREEBSD_UPDATE.
Future work could remove the conditional if it's decided that users will use
it independently of either the current in-base consumers.

After OpenZFS import, zpool auto import behavior was moved to an
explicit "zpool import -a", and the zpool rc.d script was added
as a prerequisite of zvol.
However, in r299839, zvol was added as a prerequisite of dumpon,
making it to start very early and before all 'disks' providers.
At this time, dumping on a zvol is not supported, so remove this
requirement and make zpool depend on disks to allow zpool on
full disk encryption work.

The primary benefit is maintaining a completely shared
code base with the community allowing FreeBSD to receive
new features sooner and with less effort.
I would advise against doing 'zpool upgrade'
or creating indispensable pools using new
features until this change has had a month+
to soak.
Work on merging FreeBSD support in to what was
at the time "ZFS on Linux" began in August 2018.
I first publicly proposed transitioning FreeBSD
to (new) OpenZFS on December 18th, 2018. FreeBSD
support in OpenZFS was finally completed in December
2019. A CFT for downstreaming OpenZFS support in
to FreeBSD was first issued on July 8th. All issues
that were reported have been addressed or, for
a couple of less critical matters there are
pull requests in progress with OpenZFS. iXsystems
has tested and dogfooded extensively internally.
The TrueNAS 12 release is based on OpenZFS with
some additional features that have not yet made
it upstream.
Improvements include:
project quotas, encrypted datasets,
allocation classes, vectorized raidz,
vectorized checksums, various command line
improvements, zstd compression.

flua does have some specific bits that will include luaconf.h, but the
definition of LUA_USE_DLOPEN for those won't matter. This belongs in liblua
instead.
To expand on my previous commit, which was a little sparse with details,
it's not really safe to allow LUA_USE_DLOPEN with host lib paths being used.
The host system could have an entirely different lua version and this could
cause us to crash and burn.
If we want to revive this later, we need to make sure to define c module
paths inside OBJDIR that are compiled against whatever version we've
bootstrapped.

In the last IFUNC related changes to rtld, the code that handled non-PLT
GNU IFUNC relocations ended up getting lost. This could leave some
relocations unhandled, causing crashes or misbehavior. This change restores
the handling of these relocations, but now together with the other IFUNC
relocations, allowing resolvers to reference external symbols.

There are cases when gif_interfaces cannot be replaced
with cloned_interfaces, such as tunnels with external IPv6 addresses
and internal IPv4 or vice versa. Such configuration requires
extra invocation of ifconfig(8) and supported with gif_interfaces only.

libucl comes with a Lua library binding. Build it into flua.
This lets us parse/generate config files in the various formats supported by
libucl with flua. For example, the following script will detect the format of
an object written to stdin as one of UCL config, JSON, or YAML and write it to

Rtld itself is a shared object which does not have vendor note, so
after the direct exec of ld-elf.so.1 process has p_osrel set to zero.
This affects the ABI of syscalls.
Set osrel to the __FreeBSD_version value at compile time right after
rtld identified direct exec mode. Then, switch to the osrel read from
the binary note or zero if no note, right before starting calling
ifunc resolvers, which is the first byte of the user code.

Linkers are supposed to mark PIE binaries with DF_1_PIE, such binary
cannot be correctly and usefully loaded neither by dlopen(3) nor as a
dependency of other object. For instance, we cannot do anything

It is wrong to relate on __FreeBSD_version, either from
include/param.h, kernel, or libc, to check for rtld features.
Rtld might be from newer world than the running userspace.
Add special private symbols exported by rtld itself, to indicate the
changes in runtime behavior, and features that cannot be otherwise
detected or deduced at runtime.
Note that the symbols are not exported from libc, so they intentionally
cannot be linked against, and exported from the private namespace from rtld.
Consumers are required to use dlsym(3). For instance, for
_rtld_version_laddr_offset, user should do
ptr = dlsym(RTLD_DEFAULT, "_rtld_version_laddr_offset")
or even
ptr = dlvsym(RTLD_DEFAULT, "_rtld_version_laddr_offset",
"FBSDprivate_1.0");
Non-null ptr means that the change is present.

For PIE binaries, ldd(1) performs dlopen(RTLD_TRACE) on the binary.
It is legal for binary to use initial exec TLS mode, but when such
binary (actually dso) is dlopened, we might not have enough free space
in the finalized static TLS segment. Make ldd operational by skipping
TLS space allocation, we are not going to execute any code from the
dso anyway.

The sshd service is using ssh-keygen to generate missing SSH keys.
If ssh-keygen is missing, it prints the following message:
> /etc/rc.d/sshd: WARNING: /usr/bin/ssh-keygen does not exist.
It makes sense when the key is not generated yet and
cannot be created because ssh-keygen is missing.
The problem is that even if the key is present on the host,
the sshd service would still warn about missing ssh-keygen
(even though it does not need it).

On UFS with SU+J, sometimes fsck's default recovery from journal marks the
filesystem as clean but some errors remain.
With SU only, default fsck in preen mode sometimes thinks all errors have
been fixed but some still remain.
To address the issues above, this change adds a new config option:
fsck_flags. By default it's set to -p, but the user may change it to -y
or -f -y, for instance, to force a full fsck after a system crash.

realpath(3) is used a lot e.g., by clang and is a major source of getcwd
and fstatat calls. This can be done more efficiently in the kernel.
This works by performing a regular lookup while saving the name and found
parent directory. If the terminal vnode is a directory we can resolve it using
usual means. Otherwise we can use the name saved by lookup and resolve the
parent.

This allows for rtld to not issue two sigprocmask(2) syscalls for each
symbol binding operation in single-threaded processes. Rtld needs to
block signals as part of locking to ensure signal safety of the bind
process, because signal handlers might need to lazily resolve symbol
references.
As result, number of syscalls issued on startup by simple programs not
using libthr, is typically reduced 2x. For instance, for hello world,
I see:

It's faster and more reliable to wait_for_pids than to sleep 1.
cem@ suggested just to remove auditd_stop() and use the rc.subr default
stop action (SIGTERM instead of audit -t), which has a built-in

They were introduced to take care of ifunc, but right now no architecture
provides ifunc'ed variants. Since rtld uses memset extensively this results in
a pessmization. Should someone want to use ifunc here they should provide a
mandatory symbol (e.g., rtld_memset).

People use rc.conf inside vnet jails to configure networking setups.
Presumably because some sysctl were not virtualised up until r356527 the
script was not run for vnet jails leaving the rc.conf options without
effect for non-obvious reasons. Run the netoptions startup script also
for VNET jails now to make the rc.conf options work.

When rtld is directly executed with arguments, it has to move the
program arguments, environment and elf aux data up a few slots to
remove its own arguments before the process being executed sees
them. When copying the environment, rtld was incorrectly testing
whether the location about to be written to currently contained
NULL, when was supposed to check whether it had just copied the
NULL terminator of the environment string. This had the result
that the ELF aux data was mostly treated as environment variables,
and rtld would quickly crash when it tried to access required
ELF aux data that it didn't think was present.

When activated in direct exec mode, kernel-provided AT_EXECPATH points
to the interpreter. We need to recalculate auxv to point to the
string with the path to the executable which is actually executed.
The somewhat problematic case is when the executable path is relative
and either $PATH use is not enabled or it contains '/' so $PATH search
is not performed. In this case resulting AT_EXECPATH is relative, I
might fix this later.

Summary:
As a transition aide, implement an alternative elfN_freebsd_fixup which
is called for old powerpc binaries. Similarly, add a translation to rtld to
convert old values to new ones (as expected by a new rtld).
Translation of old<->new values is incomplete, but sufficient to allow an
installworld of a new userspace from an old one when a new kernel is running.
Test Plan:
Someone needs to see how a new kernel/rtld/libc works with an old

When a PT_LOAD segment has a zero p_filesz, skip the data mmap, as mmapping
zero bytes from a file is an error.
A PT_LOAD with zero p_filesz is legal (but somewhat uncommon due to segment
merging in modern linkers, as it is more efficient to merge .data and .bss
by just extending p_memsz in the previous segment, assuming compatible
page protection.)
This was seen on ports/graphics/glew on a powerpc64 ELFv2 experimental
build.

TP points to the start of the TLS block after the tcb, but
Obj_Entry.tlsoffset includes the tcb, so subtract the size of the tcb
to compute the offset relative to TP.
This is identical to the same fixes for powerpc in r339072 and r342671.

Before this commit, the save-entropy script rotates entropy files
like logs. This involves creating a new file that holds the entropy
and renaming of all existing entropy files. However, the entropy
data do not really need to be kept in a particular order, and
replacing the oldest file is sufficient.
This commit replaces the rotation with a scan in the
[1..entropy_save_num] space that finds the first empty slot, or
the slot of the oldest file, and writes entropy into that slot.
This also fixes an issue that prevents save-entropy from saving
any entropy when there is one non-regular file in any slot as a
side effect.

When a system has no internet connection, or when it is configured to obtain
ntpd leapfiles from some source other than the internet, or even when the
sysadmin has decided for some reason to customize ntp.conf to eliminate use
of the leapfile, the rc.d/ntpd script emits various error messages related
to the file.
This change allows setting the rc var ntp_db_leapfile to NONE to disable all
automatic processing related to that file in rc.d/ntpd.

Four bytes of padding are needed in the regular powerpc case to bring the
stack frame size up to a multiple of 16 bytes to meet ABI requirements.
Fixes odd hangs I was encountering during testing.
Summary:
We need to save off the full 64-bit register, not just the low 32 bits,
of all registers getting saved off in _rtld_bind_start. Additionally,
we need to save off the other SPE registers (SPEFSCR and accumulator),
so that their program state is not affected by the PLT resolver.

Each boot, regenerate /var/run/os-release based on the currently running
system. Create a /etc/os-release symlink pointing to this file (so that this
doesn't create a new reason /etc can not be mounted read-only).
This is compatible with what other systems do and is what the sysutil/os-release
port attempted to do, but in an incomplete way. Linux, Solaris and DragonFly all
implement this natively as well. The complete standard can be found at

Moving this to the base solves both the non-standard location problem with the
port, as well as the lack of update of this file on system update.

FreeBSDlua ("flua") is a FreeBSD-private lua, flavored with whatever
extensions we need for base system operations. We currently support a subset
of lfs and lposix that are used in the rewrite of makesyscall.sh into lua,
added in r354786.
flua is intentionally written such that one can install standard lua and
some set of lua modules from ports and achieve the same effect.
linit_flua is a copy of linit.c from contrib/lua with lfs and lposix added
in. This is similar to what we do in stand/. linit.c has been renamed to
make it clear that this has flua-specific bits.
luaconf has been slightly obfuscated to make extensions more difficult. Part
of the problem is that flua is already hard enough to use as a bootstrap
tool because it's not in PATH- attempting to do extension loading would
require a special bootstrap version of flua with paths changed to protect
the innocent.
src.lua.mk has been added to make it easy for in-tree stuff to find flua,
whether it's bootstrap-flua or relying on PATH frobbing by Makefile.inc1.

Previously the watchdog timeout message was appended to the last entry
in the "Waiting for PIDS" list, resulting in a message like

the kill before logging or echoing the message.

This change allows to specify a watchdog(9) timeout for a system
shutdown. The timeout is activated when the watchdogd daemon is
stopped. The idea is to a prevent any indefinite hang during late
stages of the shutdown. The feature is implemented in rc.d/watchdogd,
it builds upon watchdogd -x option.
Note that the shutdown timeout is not actiavted when the watchdogd
service is individually stopped by an operator. It is also not
activated for the 'shutdown' to the single-user mode. In those cases it
is assumed that the operator knows what they are doing and they have
means to recover the system should it hang.
Significant subchanges and implementation details:
- the argument to rc.shutdown, completely unused before, is assigned to
rc_shutdown variable that can be inspected by rc scripts
- init(8) passes "single" or "reboot" as the argument, this is not
changed
- the argument is not mandatory and if it is not set then rc_shutdown is
set to "unspecified"
- however, the default jail management scripts and jail configuration
examples have been updated to pass "jail" to rc.shutdown, just in case
- the new timeout can be set via watchdogd_shutdown_timeout rc option
- for consistency, the regular timeout can now be set via
watchdogd_timeout rc option
- watchdogd_shutdown_timeout and watchdogd_timeout override timeout
specifications in watchdogd_flags
- existing configurations, where the new rc options are not set, should
keep working as before
I am not particularly wed to any of the implementation specifics.
I am open to changing or removing any of them as long as the provided
functionality is the same (or very close) to the proposed one.
For example, I think it can be implemented without using watchdogd -x,
by means of watchdog(1) alone. In that case there would be a small
window between stopping watchdogd and running watchdog, but I think that
that is acceptable.

has become very trigger-happy with libc++ 9.0.0.
It does not help that gcc's implementation of this warning is even more
trigger-happy, in the sense that it already warns on the declaration
itself, not when you are using it. This is very annoying with our use
of -Wsystem-headers. That should really be disabled for gcc.
After the aux vector is moved, it is necessary to re-digest aux_info so the
pointers are updated to the new locations.
This was causing thread creation to fail on powerpc64 when using direct
execution due to a nonsense value being read for aux_info[AT_STACKPROT].

std::auto_ptr in a whole bunch of individual Makefiles, make the warning
globally non-fatal instead. This is similar to what was done to many
more non-fatal warnings from newer gcc versions.
A user may set ${name}_env variable in rc.conf(5) in order to set additional
environment variables for a service command. Unfortunately, at the moment
this variable is only honored when the command is specified via the command
variable. Those additional environment variables coming from ${name}_env
are never set if the service is started via the ${rc_arg}_cmd variable (for
example start_cmd).

In the past, this allocator seems to have allocated things larger than
a page seperately. Much of this code was removed at some point (perhaps
along with sbrk() used) so remove the rest. Instead, keep allocating in
power-of-two bins up to FIRST_BUCKET_SIZE << (NBUCKETS - 1). If we want
something more efficent, we should use a fancier allocator.
While here, remove some vestages of sbrk() use. Most importantly, don't
try to page align the pagepool since it's always page aligned by mmap().

In Seventh Edition UNIX, the last pointer passed to free() was
guaranteed to not actually have been freed allowing memory to be
"compacted" via the following pattern:
free(foo);
foo = realloc(foo, newsize);
Further, Andrew Koenig reports in "C Traps and Pitfalls" that the
original realloc() implementation required this pattern.
The C standard is clear that this is Undefined Behavior. Modern
allocators don't support it and no portable code could rely on it so
remove this support.
Note: the removed implementation contains an off-by-one error and if
an item isn't found on the freelist, then twice as much memory as the
largest possible allocation will be copied.

First, amd64 version of the script cannot work at least due to the
wrong architecture specification. Second, kernel can activate shared
objects for long time, due to PIE support.
It seems the intent was to allow ld-elf.so.1 to be build and used as
an executable. Since we have direct exec mode implemented for dso
ld-elf.so.1, the non-functional and commented out scripts can be
finally removed.

In 2013 the security chapter of the Handbook was updated in r42501 to
suggest limiting access to the system accounting file [*1] by creating the
initial file with a mode of 0600. This was in part based on a discussion in
the forums [*2]. Unfortunately, this advice is overridden by the fact that a
new file is created as part of periodic daily processing, and the file mode
is set by the rc.d/accounting script.
These changes update the accounting script to create the directory with mode
0750 if it doesn't already exist, and to create the daily file with mode
0640. This limits write access to root only, read access to root and members
of wheel, and eliminates world access completely. For admins who want to
prevent even members of wheel from accessing the files, the mode of the
/var/account directory can be manually changed to 0700, because the script
never creates or changes that directory if it already exists.
The accounting_rotate_log() function now also handles the error cases of no
existing log file to rotate, and attempting to rotate the file multiple
times (.0 file already exists).
Another small change here eliminates the complexity of the mktemp/chmod/mv
sequence for creating a new acct file by using install(1) with the flags
needed to directly create the file with the desired ownership and
modes. That allows coalescing two separate if checkyesno accounting_enable
blocks into one.

Currently RTLD is linked against libc_nossp_pic which means that any libc
symbol used in rtld can pull in a lot of depedencies. This was causing
symbol such as __libc_interposing and all the pthread stubs to be included
in RTLD even though they are not required. It turns out most of these
dependencies can easily be avoided by providing overrides inside of rtld.
This change is motivated by CHERI, where we have an experimental ABI that
requires additional relocation processing to allow the use of function
pointers inside of rtld. Instead of adding this self-relocation code to
RTLD I attempted to remove most function pointers from RTLD and discovered
that most of them came from the libc dependencies instead of being actually
used inside rtld.
A nice side-effect of this change is that rtld is now 22% smaller on amd64.

Summary:
PowerPC has two PLT models: BSS-PLT and Secure-PLT. BSS-PLT uses runtime
code generation to generate the PLT stubs. Secure-PLT was introduced with
GCC 4.1 and Binutils 2.17 (base has GCC 4.2.1 and Binutils 2.17), and is a
more secure PLT format, using a read-only linkage table, with the dynamic
linker populating a non-executable index table.
This is the libc, rtld, and kernel support only. The toolchain and build
parts will be updated separately.

The logic I originally wrote to detect whether a driftfile option was in the
set of flags was based on the result of removing the pattern *flag* being an
empty string. That didn't handle the case where the string was empty to
begin with. Doh! So now it also specifically checks for an empty string.
The result of the bad check was that ntpd would run without a driftfile, but
it would do so only if it was running as root instead of the non-priveleged
ntpd user, which isn't a typical case. Ntpd runs fine without a driftfile,
although it does take it longer to stabilize the clock frequency at startup.

kern_execve() locks text vnode exclusive to be able to set and clear
VV_TEXT flag. VV_TEXT is mutually exclusive with the v_writecount > 0
condition.
The change removes VV_TEXT, replacing it with the condition
v_writecount <= -1, and puts v_writecount under the vnode interlock.
Each text reference decrements v_writecount. To clear the text
reference when the segment is unmapped, it is recorded in the
vm_map_entry backed by the text file as MAP_ENTRY_VN_TEXT flag, and
v_writecount is incremented on the map entry removal
The operations like VOP_ADD_WRITECOUNT() and VOP_SET_TEXT() check that
v_writecount does not contradict the desired change. vn_writecheck()
is now racy and its use was eliminated everywhere except access.
Atomic check for writeability and increment of v_writecount is
performed by the VOP. vn_truncate() now increments v_writecount
around VOP_SETATTR() call, lack of which is arguably a bug on its own.
nullfs bypasses v_writecount to the lower vnode always, so nullfs
vnode has its own v_writecount correct, and lower vnode gets all
references, since object->handle is always lower vnode.
On the text vnode' vm object dealloc, the v_writecount value is reset
to zero, and deadfs vop_unset_text short-circuit the operation.
Reclamation of lowervp always reclaims all nullfs vnodes referencing
lowervp first, so no stray references are left.

Since inits for the main binary are run from rtld (for some time), the
rtld_exit atexit(3) handler, which is passed from rtld to the program
entry and installed by csu, is installed after any atexit(3) handlers
installed by main binary constructors. This means that rtld_exit() is
fired before main binary handlers.
Typical C++ static constructors are executed from init (either binary
or libs) but use atexit(3) to ensure that destructors are called in
the right order, independent of the linking order. Also, C++
libraries finalizers call __cxa_finalize(3) to flush library'
atexit(3) entries. Since atexit(3) entry is cleared after being run,
this would be mostly innocent, except that, atexit(rtld_exit) done
after main binary constructors, makes destructors from libraries
executed before destructors for main.
Fix by reordering atexit(rtld_exit) before inits for main binary, same
as it happened when inits were called by csu. Do it using new private
libc symbol with pre-defined ABI.

ifconfig(8) syntax allows to specify only single address_family,
so we need additional invocation of ifconfig to support configuration
of cloned gif interface that may use different address families
for its internal and external addresses.
Also, ifconfig(8) does not allow to omit "inet6" keyword for address family
specifying IPv6 addresses as outer addresses of the interface.
Also, address_family is not "parameter" and it has to go before parameters
including "tunnel" keyword, so "ifconfig gif0 tunnel inet6 $oip1 $oip2" would be
wrong syntax and only "ifconfig gif0 inet6 tunnel $oip1 $oip2" is right.
With this change, the following works:

The goal of saving entropy in Fortuna is two-fold: (1) to provide early
availability of the random device (unblocking) on next boot; and (2), to
have known, high-quality entropy available for that initial seed. We know
it is high quality because it's output taken from Fortuna.
The FS&K paper makes it clear that Fortuna unblocks when enough bits have
been input that the output //may// be safely seeded. But they emphasize
that the quality of various entropy sources is unknown, and a saved entropy
file is essential for both availability and ensuring initial
unpredictability.
In FreeBSD we persist entropy using two mechanisms:
1. The /etc/rc.d/random shutdown() function, which is used for ordinary
shutdowns and reboots; and,
2. A cron job that runs every dozen minutes or so to persist new entropy, in
case the system suffers from power loss or a crash (bypassing the
ordinary shutdown path).
Filesystems are free to cache dirty data indefinitely, with arbitrary flush
policy. Fsync must be used to ensure the data is persisted, especially for
the cron job save-entropy, whose entire goal is power loss and crash safe
entropy persistence.
Ordinary shutdown may not need the fsync because unmount should flush out
the dirty entropy file shortly afterwards. But it is always possible power
loss or crash occurs during the short window after rc.d/random shutdown runs
and before the filesystem is unmounted, so the additional fsync there seems
harmless.

If dso uses initial exec TLS mode, rtld tries to allocate TLS in
static space. If there is no space left, the dlopen(3) fails. If space
if allocated, initial content from PT_TLS segment is distributed to
all threads' pcbs, which was missed and caused un-initialized TLS
segment for such dso after dlopen(3).
The mode is auto-detected either due to the relocation used, or if the
DF_STATIC_TLS dynamic flag is set. In the later case, the TLS segment
is tried to allocate earlier, which increases chance of the dlopen(3)
to succeed. LLD was recently fixed to properly emit the flag, ld.bdf
did it always.

It seems my subconcious plan in r345088 to not only prefer IPv6 autoconf
but to also slowly deteriorate legacy IP auto-configuration was uncovered
way too early.
In case IPv6 is a thing yet ipv6_autoconfif was not true, we would not
bring up the interface yet tell the follow-up DHCPv4 configuration in
ifconfig_up() that we did. So unless you were doing SYNCDHCP or IPv6
you would not get legacy-IP DHCPv4 configuration.
I see multiple problems here: (a) people not yet using IPv6 (obviously a
problem), and (b) the dhclient startup script not running dhclient in
that case despite configured to do so (needs to be investigated seperately).

Before this change we would only run rtsol on an interface which was
set to accept_rtadv and did not have rtsold enabled. This change
removes the latter condition and always runs rtsol (rather than the
deferred rtsold) to reduce the delay until we send the first RS.
This change will also handle the accept_rtadv before dhcp hence
starting IPv6 auto-configuration before IPV4 DHCP.
This change is intended for FreeBSD 13 and later only and will not be MFCed.

FreeBSD removed the default /etc/pf.conf file in previous releases, but
the documentation kept mentioning it like any other file present in the
system. Change pf.conf(5) to mention in the description of the default
ruleset location that this file needs to be created manually. Also, the
default rc.conf file had it's comment extended a bit to let people know
that this file does not exist by default.

When piping to awk, it's almost always an anti-pattern to use 'grep'
first.
When not in a pipeline, sometimes it is faster to use tail, as awk
must process all the lines in the input stream, and won't 'seek'.
In a pipeline, both grep and awk must process all lines, so we might
as well skip the extra process creation for tail and just use awk
for all the processing.

Building binaries as PIE allows the executable itself to be loaded at a
random address when ASLR is enabled (not just its shared libraries).
With this change PIE objects have a .pieo extension and INTERNALLIB
libraries libXXX_pie.a.
MK_PIE is disabled for some kerberos5 tools, Clang, and Subversion, as
they explicitly reference .a libraries in their Makefiles. These can
be addressed on an individual basis later. MK_PIE is also disabled for
rtld-elf because it is already position-independent using bespoke
Makefile rules.
Currently only dynamically linked binaries will be built as PIE.

There are many cases which this code does not handle (e.g. ZFS mirrors)
but the code can handle the single-disk case -- so it's enough to take
care of the "disk image which gets booted into a VM with a larger than
expected disk" case for which this firstboot script was created.

They will stop it automatically ('Interface wlan0 is down,
dhclient exiting'); use /etc/rc.d/dhclient stop command only when
none of them is used.

This call to reloc_non_plt() may crash if ifunc resolvers use the
needed libraries symbols since the pass over the needed libs
relocation is not yet done. The change in r341441 ensures the right
relocation order otherwise.

The buffer allocated in read_chat() could be 1 element too short, if the
chatstr parameter passed in is 1 or 3 charachters long (e.g. "a" or "a b").
The allocation of the pointer array does not account for the terminating
NULL pointer in that case.
Overlapping source and destination strings are undefined in strcpy().
Instead of moving a string to the left by one character just increment the
char pointer before it is assigned to the results array.

Originally intended as 'in case in needs to be re-invoked', but it was later
decided (by myself) that 're-invoke itself' makes it more clear that the
script is expected to use this in a way.

Some rc scripts in ports (e.g. uwsgi, apache, openvpn) allow for
'application profiles' that usually require the rc script to be invoked
again for each active profile. Because there's no consistent way to
determine the path because it differs between manual/service(8) invocations
and /etc/rc invocations, this leads to patterns like these:
- www/uwsgi hardcodes the script path
- security/openvpn guesses either $_file or $0 based on $0 = /etc/rc
Instead of forcing rc scripts to guess, provide an rc_service variable to
the scripts that gets set appropriately both for direct execution or when a
script is being executed via run_rc_script (e.g. /etc/rc).
This is our analog of an OpenRC variable with the same name, different case
(RC_SERVICE).

We need to subtract the TLS_TCB_SIZE to get to the real data pointer, since
r13 points to the end of the TCB structure. Prior to this, devel/protobuf-c
port broke with recent update to devel/protobuf, which exposed this issue.

The original code did not support dynamically loaded libraries and used
suboptimal access to TLS variables.
New implementation removes lazy resolving of TLS relocation - due to flaw
in TLSDESC design is impossible to switch resolver function at runtime
without expensive locking.
Due to this, 3 specialized resolvers are implemented:
- load time resolver for TLS relocation from libraries loaded with main
executable (thus with known TLS offset).
- resolver for undefined thread weak symbols.
- slower lazy resolver for dynamically loaded libraries with fast path for
already resolved symbols.

'read' pessimistically read(2)s one byte at a time, which can be quite
silly for large environments in slow emulators.
In my boring user environment, truss shows that the number of read()
syscalls to source rc.subr and invoke list_vars is reduced by something like
3400 to 60. ministat(1) shows a significant time difference of about -71%
for my environment.

Although these are slightly obsolete in favor of R_AARCH64_TLSDESC,
gcc -mtls-dialect=trad still use them.
Please note that definition of TLS_DTPMOD64 and TLS_DTPREL64 are incorrectly
exchanged in GNU binutils. TLS_DTPREL64 should be encoded to 1028 (as is
defined in ARM ELF ABI) but binutils encode it to 1029. And vice versa,
TLS_DTPMOD64 should be encoded to 1029 but binutils encode it to 1028.
While I'm in, add also R_AARCH64_NONE. It can be produced as result of linker
relaxation.

- Do not perform ifunc relocations together with other PLT relocations
in PLT. Instead, do it during an additional pass over the init
list, so that ifuncs are resolved in the order of dso
dependencies. This allows the ifuncs resolvers to call into depended
libs. Init list now includes all objects instead of only objects
with init/fini callables.
- Disable relro protection around bind_now ifunc relocations.
I considered calling ifunc resolvers of dso after initializers of all
dependencies are processed, and decided that this is wrong/should not
be supported. The order now is normal relocations for all
objects->ifunc resolution in init order->initializers, where each step
does complete pass over all loaded objects before moving to the next
step.

An issue remains with BIND_NOW and processes using threads. For now,
restore libc's BIND_NOW disable, and also disable BIND_NOW in rtld and
libthr.
A patch is in review (D18400) that likely fixes this issue, but just
disable BIND_NOW pending further testing after it is committed.

The function reloc_non_plt has complicated variable lifetimes that GCC 6.4.0
(the version currently used by amd64-xtoolchain-gcc) misunderstands and
produces an erroneous warning about. Silence it to allow the -Werror build
to proceed.

and we would need to use mprotect(2) two more times to fix it. Note

This dynamic tag contains the location of the .rld_map section relative to
the location of the dynamic tag. For PIE MIPS binaries DT_MIPS_RLD_MAP can
not be used since it contains an absolute address. Without this change
GDB can not find the function program counters in other libraries and once
I apply this change I can successfully run info sharedlibraries again.

Do not use textsize and do not flush everything between map base and
base + textsize, because unmapped areas cannot be flushed.
This makes Obj_Entry textsize only use go away, and I will remove it
later.

This adds new keywords to rc/service to enable/disable a service's
rc.conf(5) variable and "delete" to remove the variable.
When the "service_delete_empty" variable in rc.conf(5) is set to "YES"
(default is "NO") an rc.conf.d file (in /etc/ or /usr/local/etc) is
deleted if empty after modification using "service $foo delete".

With lld-generated binaries the first PT_LOAD will usually be a read-only
segment unless you pass --no-rosegment. For those binaries the textsize is
determined by the next PT_LOAD. To allow both LLD and bfd 2.17 binaries to
be parsed correctly use the end of the last PT_LOAD that is marked as
executable instead.
I noticed that the value was wrong while adding some debug prints for some rtld
changes for CHERI binaries. `obj->textsize` only seems to be used by PPC so the
effect is untested. However, the value before was definitely wrong and the new
result matches the phdrs.
