b8e98004a9 Move updating TX packet counter to the inside of send loop. axe(4)
controllers combine multiple TX requests into single one if there
is room in TX buffer of controller. Updating TX packet counter at
the end of TX completion resulted in incorrect TX packet counter as
axe(4) thought it sent 1 packet. There is no easy way to know how
many combined TX were completed in the callback.
Because this change updates TX packet counter before actual
transmission, it may not be ideal one. But I believe it's better
than showing fake 8kpps under high TX load. With this change, TX
shows 221kpps on Linksus USB200M.

f8616ebfae If vm_map_find() is asked to allocate a superpage-aligned region of virtual
addresses that is greater than a superpage in size but not a multiple of
the superpage size, then vm_map_find() is not always expanding the kernel
pmap to support the last few small pages being allocated. These failures
are not commonplace, so this was first noticed by someone porting FreeBSD
to a new architecture. Previously, we grew the kernel page table in
vm_map_findspace() when we found the first available virtual address.
This works most of the time because we always grow the kernel pmap or page
table by an amount that is a multiple of the superpage size. Now, instead,
we defer the call to pmap_growkernel() until we are committed to a range
of virtual addresses in vm_map_insert(). In general, there is another
reason to prefer calling pmap_growkernel() in vm_map_insert(). It makes
it possible for someone to do the equivalent of an mmap(MAP_FIXED) on the
kernel map.

47a9ec4107 Certain static code analysis tools (FlexeLint being one) are very
suspicious about 'l' and '1' being confused in numeric constants.
The fear being that some old fart programmer might still think that
he is using a Remmington Noiseless as input terminal device.

An easy way to placate this fear is to use capital 'L' or to put
the 'u' in unsigned constants in front of the 'l'.

eecadc7023 Add a memory-range interface to /dev/mem on PowerPC using PAT attributes.
Unlike actual MTRR, this only controls the mapping attributes for
subsequent mmap() of /dev/mem. Nonetheless, the support is sufficiently
MTRR-like that Xorg can use it, which translates into an enormous increase
in graphics performance on PowerPC.

2d5db3709b The makectx() function, used by kdb_trap() to reconstruct pcb from
trap frame when trap initiated kdb entry, incorrectly calculated the
value of %rsp for trapped thread.

According to Intel(R) 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer's Manual
Volume 3A: System Programming Guide, Part 1, rev. 035, 6.14.2 64-Bit Mode
Stack Frame, "64-bit mode ... pushes SS:RSP unconditionally, rather than
only on a CPL change."
Even assuming the conditional push of the %ss:%rsp, the calculation
was still wrong because sizeof(tf_ss) + sizeof(tf_rsp) == 16 on amd64.

Always use the tf_rsp from trap frame. The change supposedly fixes
stepping when using kgdb backend for kdb.

24e01f5998 Split the root mount logic from the (generic) mount code and move
it (the root mount code) into a new file called vfs_mountroot.c

The split is almost trivial, as the code is almost perfectly
non-intertwined. The only adjustment needed was to move the UMA
zone allocation out of vfs_mountroot() [in vfs_mountroot.c] and
into vfs_mount.c, where it had to be done as a SYSINIT [see
vfs_mount_init()].

There are no functional changes with this commit.

de1add1e45 - In the spirit of previous simplifications factor out the checks for a
different PHY instance being selected and isolation out into the wrappers
  around the service methods rather than duplicating them over and over
  again (besides, a PHY driver shouldn't need to care about which instance
  it actually is).
- Centralize the check for the need to isolate a non-zero PHY instance not
  supporting isolation in mii_mediachg() and just ignore it rather than
  panicing, which should sufficient given that a) things are likely to
  just work anyway if one doesn't plug in more than one port at a time and
  b) refusing to attach in this case just leaves us in a unknown but most
  likely also not exactly correct configuration (besides several drivers
  setting MIIF_NOISOLATE didn't care about these anyway, probably due to
  setting this flag for no real reason).
- Minor fixes like removing unnecessary setting of sc->mii_anegticks,
  using sc->mii_anegticks instead of hardcoded values etc.

d443a96ffb i386 and amd64 mp_machdep: improve topology detection for Intel CPUs
This patch is significantly based on previous work by jkim.
List of changes:
- added comments that describe topology uniformity assumption
- added reference to Intel Processor Topology Enumeration article
- documented a few global variables that describe topology
- retired weirdly set and used logical_cpus variable
- changed fallback code for mp_ncpus > 0 case, so that CPUs are treated
  as being different packages rather than cores in a single package
- moved AMD-specific code to topo_probe_amd [jkim]
- in topo_probe_0x4() follow Intel-prescribed procedure of deriving SMT
  and core masks and match APIC IDs against those masks [started by
  jkim]
- in topo_probe_0x4() drop code for double-checking topology parameters
  by looking at L1 cache properties [jkim]
- in topo_probe_0xb() add fallback path to topo_probe_0x4() as
  prescribed by Intel [jkim]

Still to do:
- prepare for upcoming AMD CPUs by using new mechanism of uniform
  topology description [pointed by jkim]
- probe cache topology in addition to CPU topology and probably use that
  for scheduler affinity topology; e.g. Core2 Duo and Athlon II X2 have
  the same CPU topology, but Athlon cores do not share L2 cache while
  Core2's do (no L3 cache in both cases)
- think of supporting non-uniform topologies if they are ever
  implemented for platforms in question
- think how to better described old HTT vs new HTT distinction, HTT vs
  SMT can be confusing as SMT is a generic term
- more robust code for marking CPUs as "logical" and/or "hyperthreaded",
  use HTT mask instead of modulo operation
- correct support for halting logical and/or hyperthreaded CPUs, let
  scheduler know that it shouldn't schedule any threads on those CPUs

4afec17417 Rename rl_setmulti() to rl_rxfilter() as rl_rxfilter() will handle
IFF_ALLMULTI/IFF_PROMISC as well as multicast filter configuration.
Rewrite RX filter logic to reduce number of register accesses and
make it handle promiscuous/allmulti toggling without controller
reinitialization.

Previously rl(4) counted on controller reinitialization to reprogram
promiscuous configuration but r211767 resulted in avoiding
controller reinitialization whenever promiscuous mode is toggled.
To address this, keep track of driver's view of interface state and
handle IFF_ALLMULTI/IFF_PROMISC changes without reinitializing
controller. This should fix a regression introduced in r211267.

While I'm here remove unnecessary variable reassignment in ioctl
handler.

7b9df13bcd there must be only one SYSINIT with SI_SUB_RUN_SCHEDULER+SI_ORDER_ANY order
SI_SUB_RUN_SCHEDULER+SI_ORDER_ANY should only be used to call
scheduler() function which turns the initial thread into swapper proper
and thus there is no further SYSINIT processing.
Other SYSINITs with SI_SUB_RUN_SCHEDULER+SI_ORDER_ANY may get ordered
after scheduler() and thus never executed. That particular relative
order is semi-arbitrary.

Thus, change such places to use SI_ORDER_MIDDLE.
Also, use SI_ORDER_MIDDLE instead of correct, but less appealing,
SI_ORDER_ANY - 1.

6c82a991c3 In linprocfs_doargv():
- handle compat32 processes;
- remove the checks for copied in addresses to belong into valid
  usermode range, proc_rwmem() does this;
- simplify loop reading single string, limit the total amount of strings
  collected by ARG_MAX bytes;
- correctly add '\0' at the end of each copied string;
- fix style.

In linprocfs_doprocenviron():
- unlock the process before calling copyin code [1]. The process is held
  by pseudofs.

In linprocfs_doproccmdline:
- use linprocfs_doargv() to handle !curproc case for which p_args is not cached.

The previous version of code have no locking when testing rt_refcnt.
The result of the lack of locking may result in a condition where
a routing entry have a reference count but at the same time have
RTPRF_OURS bit set and an expiration timer. These would eventually
lead to a panic:

Add a new directory entry flag DE_USER to mark entries which should

a0e2fdedd1 - Split code shared by almost any boot loader into separate files and
clean up most layering violations:

	sys/boot/i386/common/rbx.h:

		RBX_* defines
		OPT_SET()
		OPT_CHECK()

	sys/boot/common/util.[ch]:

		memcpy()
		memset()
		memcmp()
		bcpy()
		bzero()
		bcmp()
		strcmp()
		strncmp() [new]
		strcpy()
		strcat()
		strchr()
		strlen()
		printf()

	sys/boot/i386/common/cons.[ch]:

		ioctrl
		putc()
		xputc()
		putchar()
		getc()
		xgetc()
		keyhit() [now takes number of seconds as an argument]
		getstr()

	sys/boot/i386/common/drv.[ch]:

		struct dsk
		drvread()
		drvwrite() [new]
		drvsize() [new]

	sys/boot/common/crc32.[ch] [new]

	sys/boot/common/gpt.[ch] [new]

- Teach gptboot and gptzfsboot about new files. I haven't touched the
  rest, but there is still a lot of code duplication to be removed.

- Implement full GPT support. Currently we just read primary header and
  partition table and don't care about checksums, etc. After this change we
  verify checksums of primary header and primary partition table and if
  there is a problem we fall back to backup header and backup partition
  table.

- Clean up most messages to use prefix of boot program, so in case of an
  error we know where the error comes from, eg.:

	gptboot: unable to read primary GPT header

- If we can't boot, print boot prompt only once and not every five
  seconds.

- Honour newly added GPT attributes:

	bootme - this is bootable partition
	bootonce - try to boot from this partition only once
	bootfailed - we failed to boot from this partition

- Change boot order of gptboot to the following:

	1. Try to boot from all the partitions that have both 'bootme'
	   and 'bootonce' attributes one by one.
	2. Try to boot from all the partitions that have only 'bootme'
	   attribute one by one.
	3. If there are no partitions with 'bootme' attribute, boot from
	   the first UFS partition.

- The 'bootonce' functionality is implemented in the following way:

	1. Walk through all the partitions and when 'bootonce'
	   attribute is found without 'bootme' attribute, remove
	   'bootonce' attribute and set 'bootfailed' attribute.
	   'bootonce' attribute alone means that we tried to boot from
	   this partition, but boot failed after leaving gptboot and
	   machine was restarted.
	2. Find partition with both 'bootme' and 'bootonce' attributes.
	3. Remove 'bootme' attribute.
	4. Try to execute /boot/loader or /boot/kernel/kernel from that
	   partition. If succeeded we stop here.
	5. If execution failed, remove 'bootonce' and set 'bootfailed'.
	6. Go to 2.

   If whole boot succeeded there is new /etc/rc.d/gptboot script coming
   that will log all partitions that we failed to boot from (the ones with
   'bootfailed' attribute) and will remove this attribute. It will also
   find partition with 'bootonce' attribute - this is the partition we
   booted from successfully. The script will log success and remove the
   attribute.

   All the GPT updates we do here goes to both primary and backup GPT if
   they are valid. We don't touch headers or partition tables when
   checksum doesn't match.

6efb3e341f Add three GPT attributes:
GPT_ENT_ATTR_BOOTME - this is bootable partition

GPT_ENT_ATTR_BOOTONCE - try to boot only once from this partition

GPT_ENT_ATTR_BOOTFAILED - set this flag if we cannot boot from partition
	containing GPT_ENT_ATTR_BOOTONCE flag; note that if we cannot
	boot from partition that contains only GPT_ENT_ATTR_BOOTME flag,
	the GPT_ENT_ATTR_BOOTFAILED flag won't be set

According to wikipedia Microsoft TechNet says that attributes are divided into
two halves: the lower 4 bytes representing partition independent attributes,
and the upper 4 bytes are partition type dependent. Microsoft is already using
bits 60 (read-only), 62 (hidden) and 63 (do not automount) and I'd like to not
collide with those, so we are using bit 59 (bootme), 58 (bootonce) and 57
(bootfailed).

61548876b1 kdb_backtrace: use stack_print_ddb instead of stack_print
This is a followup to r212964.
stack_print call chain obtains linker sx lock and thus potentially may
lead to a deadlock depending on a kind of a panic.
stack_print_ddb doesn't acquire any locks and it doesn't use any
facilities of ddb backend.
Using stack_print_ddb outside of DDB ifdef required taking a number of
helper functions from under it as well.

It is a good idea to rename linker_ddb_* and stack_*_ddb functions to
have 'unlocked' component in their name instead of 'ddb', because those
functions do not use any DDB services, but instead they provide unlocked
access to linker symbol information. The latter was previously needed
only for DDB, hence the 'ddb' name component.

Alternative is to ditch unlocked versions altogether after implementing
proper panic handling:
1. stop other cpus upon a panic
2. make all non-spinlock lock operations (mutex, sx, rwlock) be a no-op
   when panicstr != NULL

9c2d052943 acpi_attach: do not explicitly install default handlers for default

There has been no need to do that starting with ACPICA 20040427 as
AcpiEnableSubsystem() installs the handlers automatically.
Additionaly, explicitly calling AcpiInstallAddressSpaceHandler before
AcpiEnableSubsystem is not supported by ACPICA and leads to too early
execution of _REG methods in some DSDTs, which may result in problems.

d205253515 When building world with clang, for gnu/lib/libobjc, sys/boot/i386/boot2

Instead, only replace the first instance of clang (if any, including

8f7f5a7f26 Fix exec_imgact_shell()'s handling of two error cases: (1) Previously, if
the first line of a script exceeded MAXSHELLCMDLEN characters, then
exec_imgact_shell() silently truncated the line and passed on the truncated
interpreter name or argument. Now, exec_imgact_shell() will fail and return
ENOEXEC, which is the commonly used errno among Unix variants for this type
of error. (2) Previously, exec_imgact_shell()'s check on the length of the
interpreter's name was ineffective. In other words, exec_imgact_shell()
could not possibly fail and return ENAMETOOLONG. The reason being that the
length of the interpreter name had to exceed MAXSHELLCMDLEN characters in
order that ENAMETOOLONG be returned. But, the search for the end of the
interpreter name stops after at most MAXSHELLCMDLEN - 2 characters are
scanned. (In the end, this particular error is eventually discovered
outside of exec_imgact_shell() and ENAMETOOLONG is returned. So, the real
effect of this second change is that the error is detected earlier, in
exec_imgact_shell().)

Update the definition of MAXINTERP to the actual limit on the size of
the interpreter name that has been in effect since r142453 (from
2005).

95d23438dd Until hardclock() and respectively tc_windup() called first time, system
is running on "dummy" time counter. But to function properly in one-shot
mode, event timer management code requires working time counter. Slow
moving "dummy" time counter delays first hardclock() call by few seconds
on my systems, even though timer interrupts were correctly kicking kernel.
That causes few seconds delay during boot with one-shot mode enabled.

To break this loop, explicitly call tc_windup() first time during
initialization process to let it switch to some real time counter.

- Process some tx done messages in the transmit path, to ensure that
  the XLR NA tx done FIFO does not overflow.
- Add a message ring handler API to process atmost a given number of
  messages from a specified bucket mask. This will be used to process
  the tx done messages
- Add a callout to restart transmit in the case transmit gets blocked.
- Update enable_msgring_int() and disable_msgring_int(), remove unused

0b750af1b1 amd64: reduce VM_KMEM_SIZE_SCALE to 1 allowing kernel to use more memory
KVA space is abundant on amd64, so there is no reason to limit kernel
map size to a fraction of available physical memory. In fact, it could
be larger than physical memory.

This should help with memory auto-tuning for ZFS and shouldn't affect
other workloads.
This should reduce number of circumstances for "kmem_map too small"
panics, but probably won't eliminate them entirely due to potential kmem
fragmentation.

In fact, you might want/need to limit maximum ARC size after this commit
if you need to resrve more memory for applications.

This change was discussed on arch@ and nobody said "don't do it".

7c1353491f zfs arc_reclaim_needed: more reasonable threshold for available pages
vm_paging_target() is not a trigger of any kind for pageademon, but
rather a "soft" target for it when it's already triggered.
Thus, trying to keep 2048 pages above that level at the expense of ARC
was simply driving ARC size into the ground even with normal memory
loads.
Instead, use a threshold at which a pagedaemon scan is triggered, so
that ARC reclaiming helps with pagedaemon's task, but the latter still
recycles active and inactive pages.

9500655e5a Add one-shot mode support to attimer (i8254) event timer.
Unluckily, using one-shot mode is impossible, when same hardware used for
time counting. Introduce new tunable hint.attimer.0.timecounter, setting
which to 0 disables i8254 time counter and allows one-shot mode. Note,
that on some systems there may be no other reliable enough time counters,
so this tunable should be used with understanding.

63feedfd46 MFp4 (//depot/projects/mps/...):
According to the MPT2 spec, task management commands are
serialized, and so no I/O should start while task management
commands are active.

So, to comply with that, freeze the SIM queue before we send any
task management commands (abort, target reset, etc.) down to the
IOC. We unfreeze the queue once the task management command
completes.

It isn't clear from the spec whether multiple simultaneous task
management commands are supported. Right now it is possible to
have multiple outstanding task management commands, especially in
the abort case. Multiple outstanding aborts do complete
successfully, so it may be supported.

We also don't yet have any recovery mechanism (e.g. reset the IOC)
if the task management command fails.

1c18314d17 Remove the TCP inflight bandwidth limiter as announced in r211315
to give way for the pluggable congestion control framework. It is
the task of the congestion control algorithm to set the congestion
window and amount of inflight data without external interference.

In 'struct tcpcb' the variables previously used by the inflight
limiter are renamed to spares to keep the ABI intact and to have
some more space for future extensions.

In 'struct tcp_info' the variable 'tcpi_snd_bwnd' is not removed to
preserve the ABI. It is always set to 0.

In siftr.c in 'struct pkt_node' the variable 'snd_bwnd' is not removed
to preserve the ABI. It is always set to 0.

These unused variable in the various structures may be reused in the
future or garbage collected before the next release or at some other
point when an ABI change happens anyway for other reasons.

No MFC is planned. The inflight bandwidth limiter stays disabled by
default in the other branches but remains available.
