can deal with from 1GB to 2GB. I have no way to test with >1GB because I
don't have high enough density memory to get any one box over 1GB. However, I
have tested it on xp1000 & ds10 with < 1GB of memory & have verified that it
does no harm.
filesystem is discovered. Preference is given to using the kernel
environment variable vfs.root.mountfrom, which is set by the loader
according to the contents of /etc/fstab. Changes in the MD code
provide fallback mechanisms for systems not using the loader.
A more robust fallback path is also provided, with the last recourse
being to prompt on the console for a root device.
These changes drastically simplify the machine-dependant parts of
the root configuration process. In addition, support for CDROM root
devices has been removed; it was a nasty hack and didn't work.

to config(8) for static device tables that have not existed for quite
some time. They have been aliases for 'device' for a while, and "tape"
went away entirely as it wasn't used anywhere (except in an example
in LINT.. "fixed").
If the ipl is lowered here, a machine can rapidly run out of stack
space when it is under heavy interrupt load. Without this fix,
my test machine would fall over within a few seconds when forwarding
14,000 packets/sec. With the patch, it has been up for over 24 hours
and has built the world at the same time.

Merge the contents (less some trivial bordering the silly comments)
of <vm/vm_prot.h> and <vm/vm_inherit.h> into <vm/vm.h>. This puts
the #defines for the vm_inherit_t and vm_prot_t types next to their
typedefs.
This paves the road for the commit to follow shortly: change
useracc() to use VM_PROT_{READ|WRITE} rather than B_{READ|WRITE}
as argument.
In order to make this work, I created a pseudo-PHY driver to deal with
Macronix chips that use the built-in NWAY support and symbol mode port.
This is actually all of them, with the exception of the original MX98713
which presents its NWAY support via the MII serial interface.
The mxphy driver actually manipulates the controller registers directly
rather than using the miibus_readreg()/miibus_writereg() bus interface
since there are no MII registers to read. The mx driver itself pretends
that the NWAY interface is a PHY locayed at MII address 31 for the sole
purpose of allowing the mxphy_probe() routine to know when it needs to
attach to a host controller.
* Change the hack used on the alpha for mapping devices into DENSE or
BWX memory spaces to a simpler one. Its still a hack and should be
a seperate api to explicitly map the resource.

This file contained the structures for cfdata (old style config) and is no
longer used. It was included by most drivers.
It confuses the remote debugger as the definition of 'struct device' in
device.h is found before the one in bus_private.h.
struct sigcontext and ucontext_t/mcontext_t are defined in such
a way that both (ie struct sigcontext and ucontext_t) can be
passed on to sigreturn. The signal handler is still given a
ucontext_t for maximum flexibility.
For backward compatibility sigreturn restores the state for the
alternate signal stack from sigcontext.sc_onstack and not from
ucontext_t.uc_stack. A good way to determine which value the
application has set and thus which value to use, is still open
for discussion.
NOTE: This change should only affect those binaries that use
sigcontext and/or ucontext_t. In the source tree itself
this is only doscmd. Recompilation is required for those
applications.
This commit also fixes a lot of style bugs without hopefully
adding new ones.
NOTE: struct sigaltstack.ss_size now has type size_t again. For
some reason I changed that into unsigned int.

When testing the adaptec controller on alpha, I realized I misread the xp1000
documentation and the way I'm calculating the bus number for PCI
config space accesses on the tsunami is wrong. I had thought that a bus
behind a ppb should be numbered as the nth bus in that hose, but it
actually needs to be the nth global bus within the system. The bus number
for the primary bus on a hose must always remain 0 when calculating config
space addresses.
a 2940UW. The dp264 (and ds20, I think) have an AIC7895 on board so it
is important the ahc driver be in GENERIC so that FreeBSD can install on
these boxes.

The compatibility code and/or emulators have been updated:
iBCS2 now mostly uses the older syscalls. SVR4 now properly
handles all signals. This has been achieved by using the
new sigset_t throughout the emulator. The Linuxulator has
been severely updated. Internally the new Linux sigset_t is
made the default. These are then mapped to and from the
new FreeBSD sigset_t.
Also, rt_sigsuspend has been implemented in the Linuxulator.
Implementing this syscall basicly caused all this sigset_t
changing in the first place and the syscall has been used
throughout the change as a means for testing. It basicly is
too much work to undo the implementation so that it can
later be added again.
A special note on the use of sv_sigtbl and sv_sigsize in
struct sysentvec:
Every signal larger than sv_sigsize is not translated and is
passed on to the signal handler unmodified. Signals in the
range 1 upto and including sv_sigsize are translated.
The rationale is that only the system defined signals need to
be translated.
The emulators also have been updated so that the translation
tables are only indexed for valid (system defined) signals.
This change also fixes the translation bug already in the
SVR4 emulator.

By introducing a new sigframe so that the signal handler operates
on the new siginfo_t and on ucontext_t instead of sigcontext, we
now need two version of sendsig and sigreturn.
A flag in struct proc determines whether the process expects an
old sigframe or a new sigframe. The signal trampoline handles
which sigreturn to call. It does this by testing for a magic
cookie in the frame.
The alpha uses osigreturn to implement longjmp. This means that
osigreturn is not only used for compatibility with existing
binaries. To handle the new sigset_t, setjmp saves it in
sc_reserved (see NOTE).
the struct sigframe has been moved from frame.h to sigframe.h
to handle the complex header dependencies that was caused by
the new sigframe.
NOTE: For the i386, the size of jmp_buf has been increased to hold
the new sigset_t. On the alpha this has been prevented by

random-seekable devices. This lets dd(1) know it can seek on them. It
also affects spec_vnopen() (IIRC), but only makes the path of execution smaller,
and does not change its behavior. This is when securelevel >= 2.
the Davicom DM9100 and DM9102 chipsets, including the Jaton Corporation
XPressNet. Datasheet is available from www.davicom8.com.
The DM910x chips are still more tulip clones. The API is reproduced
pretty faithfully, unfortunately the performance is pretty bad. The
transmitter seems to have a lot of problems DMAing multi-fragment
packets. The only way to make it work reliably is to coalesce transmitted
packets into a single contiguous buffer. The Linux driver (written by
Davicom) actually does something similar to this. I can't recomment this
NIC as anything more than a "connectivity solution."
This driver uses newbus and miibus and is supported on both i386
and alpha platforms.
SiS 900 and SiS 7016 PCI fast ethernet chipsets. Full manuals for the
SiS chips can be found at www.sis.com.tw.
This is a fairly simple chipset. The receiver uses a 128-bit multicast
hash table and single perfect entry for the station address. Transmit and
receive DMA and FIFO thresholds are easily tuneable. Documentation is
pretty decent and performance is not bad, even on my crufty 486. This
driver uses newbus and miibus and is supported on both the i386 and
alpha architectures.

PCI fast ethernet controller. Currently, the only card I know that uses
this chip is the D-Link DFE-550TX. (Don't ask me where to buy these: the
only cards I have are samples sent to me by D-Link.)
This driver is the first to make use of the miibus code once I'm sure
it all works together nicely, I'll start converting the other drivers.
The Sundance chip is a clone of the 3Com 3c90x Etherlink XL design
only with its own register layout. Support is provided for ifmedia,
hardware multicast filtering, bridging and promiscuous mode.
out of the asm code, and as a bonus implements rtprio and idprio for the
Alpha. Previously if you ran an idprio process, you were assured of a
deadlock.
The first reason for this rewrite is KNF conformance.
The second reason is to avoid redundancy. Each function printed the same
string, with only the syscall name being different. The actual printing is now
performed by a single function, which gets the syscall name as an argument.
The third reason is that of convenience. It's now very easy to add a new
dummy implementation. Just add ``DUMMY(foo);'' to the file. It's also a lot
easier now to see if a syscall has a dummy implementation or not.
The dummies are ordered on syscall number. Please maintain this when adding
new dummies (there're 32 candidates at the time of writing :-)

functions use the new sigset_t and sigaction_t which allows support for more
than 32 signals. Only the lower 32 signals are supported for now.
linux_rt_sigaction, linux_sigaction and linux_signal use linux_do_sigaction
to do the actual work. That way unnecessary redundancy is avoided. The same
has been done for linux_rt_sigprocmask and linux_sigprocmask. They call
linux_do_sigprocmask to do the actual work.
Introduce BUF_STRATEGY(struct buf *, int flag) macro, and use it throughout.

address of the resource is initialised to point into either dense-mapped
or bwx-mapped space respectively, allowing direct memory pointers to be
used to device memory.

ethernet controllers based on the AIC-6915 "Starfire" controller chip.
There are single port, dual port and quad port cards, plus one 100baseFX
card. All are 64-bit PCI devices, except one single port model.
The Starfire would be a very nice chip were it not for the fact that
receive buffers have to be longword aligned. This requires buffer
copying in order to achieve proper payload alignment on the alpha.
Payload alignment is enforced on both the alpha and x86 platforms.
The Starfire has several different DMA descriptor formats and transfer
mechanisms. This driver uses frame descriptors for transmission which
can address up to 14 packet fragments, and a single fragment descriptor
for receive. It also uses the producer/consumer model and completion
queues for both transmit and receive. The transmit ring has 128
descriptors and the receive ring has 256.
This driver supports both FreeBSD/i386 and FreeBSD/alpha, and uses newbus
so that it can be compiled as a loadable kernel module. Support for BPF
and hardware multicast filtering is included.
When creating new processes (or performing exec), the new page
directory is initialized too early. The kernel might grow before
p_vmspace is initialized for the new process. Since pmap_growkernel
doesn't yet know about the new page directory, it isn't updated, and
subsequent use causes a failure.
The fix is (1) to clear p_vmspace early, to stop pmap_growkernel
from stomping on memory, and (2) to defer part of the initialization
of new page directories until p_vmspace is initialized.

large (1G) memory machine configurations. I was able to run 'dbench 32'
on a 32MB system without bring the machine to a grinding halt.
* buffer cache hash table now dynamically allocated. This will
have no effect on memory consumption for smaller systems and
will help scale the buffer cache for larger systems.
* minor enhancement to pmap_clearbit(). I noticed that
all the calls to it used constant arguments. Making
it an inline allows the constants to propogate to
deeper inlines and should produce better code.
* removal of inherent vfs_ioopt support through the emplacement
of appropriate #ifdef's, with John's permission. If we do not
find a use for it by the end of the year we will remove it entirely.
* removal of getnewbufloops* counters & sysctl's - no longer
necessary for debugging, getnewbuf() is now optimal.
* buffer hash table functions removed from sys/buf.h and localized
to vfs_bio.c
* VFS_BIO_NEED_DIRTYFLUSH flag and support code added
( bwillwrite() ), allowing processes to block when too many dirty
buffers are present in the system.
* removal of a softdep test in bdwrite() that is no longer necessary
now that bdwrite() no longer attempts to flush dirty buffers.
* slight optimization added to bqrelse() - there is no reason
to test for available buffer space on B_DELWRI buffers.
* addition of reverse-scanning code to vfs_bio_awrite().
vfs_bio_awrite() will attempt to locate clusterable areas
in both the forward and reverse direction relative to the
offset of the buffer passed to it. This will probably not
make much of a difference now, but I believe we will start
to rely on it heavily in the future if we decide to shift
some of the burden of the clustering closer to the actual
I/O initiation.
* Removal of the newbufcnt and lastnewbuf counters that Kirk
added. They do not fix any race conditions that haven't already
been fixed by the gbincore() test done after the only call
to getnewbuf(). getnewbuf() is a static, so there is no chance
of it being misused by other modules. ( Unless Kirk can think
of a specific thing that this code fixes. I went through it
very carefully and didn't see anything ).
* removal of VOP_ISLOCKED() check in flushbufqueues(). I do not
think this check is necessary, the buffer should flush properly
whether the vnode is locked or not. ( yes? ).
* removal of extra arguments passed to getnewbuf() that are not
necessary.
* missed cluster_wbuild() that had to be a cluster_wbuild_wb() in
vfs_cluster.c
* vn_write() now calls bwillwrite() *PRIOR* to locking the vnode,
which should greatly aid flushing operations in heavy load
situations - both the pageout and update daemons will be able
to operate more efficiently.
* removal of b_usecount. We may add it back in later but for now
it is useless. Prior implementations of the buffer cache never
had enough buffers for it to be useful, and current implementations
which make more buffers available might not benefit relative to
the amount of sophistication required to implement a b_usecount.
Straight LRU should work just as well, especially when most things
are VMIO backed. I expect that (even though John will not like
this assumption) directories will become VMIO backed some point soon.

is not set, but I'm not sure of the value of this since the traditional
bsd-style fourth argument (address) is missing.
Also, tidy up a bit of lint.
into uipc_mbuf.c. This reduces three sets of identical tunable code to
one set, and puts the initialisation with the mbuf code proper.
Make NMBUFs tunable as well.
Move the nmbclusters sysctl here as well.
Move the initialisation of maxsockets from param.c to uipc_socket2.c,
next to its corresponding sysctl.
Use the new tunable macros for the kern.vm.kmem.size tunable (this should have
been in a separate commit, whoops).

are included, then behave as if both were included.
This won't change existing drivers, all of which include one or more
of bus_{p,mem}io.h, but will allow drivers from other systems to come

optimal for some drivers, but those drivers can be optimized for
FreeBSD after the initial bringup happens.
Without the change, there is a bug that preclude drivers from
compiling with strange warning/errors.

On the VAX, it used to be used for special compilation to avoid the
optimizer which would mess with memory mapped devices etc. These days
we use 'volatile'.
loop it was supposed to be in. Correct some ugly formatting. Remember to
initialize the alignment tag. Honor and pass a callers request to contigalloc
if they had a non-zero alignment constraint.
SYSINIT_KT() etc (which is a static, compile-time procedure), use a
NetBSD-style kthread_create() interface. kproc_start is still available
as a SYSINIT() hook. This allowed simplification of chunks of the
sysinit code in the process. This kthread_create() is our old kproc_start
internals, with the SYSINIT_KT fork hooks grafted in and tweaked to work
the same as the NetBSD one.
One thing I'd like to do shortly is get rid of nfsiod as a user initiated
process. It makes sense for the nfs client code to create them on the
fly as needed up to a user settable limit. This means that nfsiod
doesn't need to be in /sbin and is always "available". This is a fair bit
easier to do outside of the SYSINIT_KT() framework.
i386 isa drivers that used to be order sensitive. The probe order of
those drivers is now determined by a list in isa_compat.c and config
file order is totally irrelevant.
run quite reliably now. I've explicitly tagged them as /* XXX overkill? */
although one does actually check for VM_PROT_EXECUTE.

Zap symbols.raw and glue to make symbols.* - it's not used on the ELF-only
alpha kernel. Symbol sorting is dead-end anyway once libkvm uses the
in-kernel linker symbol lookup.
lockmgr locks. This commit should be functionally equivalent to the old
semantics. That is, all buffer locking is done with LK_EXCLUSIVE
requests. Changes to take advantage of LK_SHARED and LK_RECURSIVE will
be done in future commits.

- The header file machine/console.h is reorganized; its contents is now
split into sys/fbio.h, sys/kbio.h (a new file) and sys/consio.h
(another new file). machine/console.h is still maintained for
compatibility reasons.
- Kernel console selection/installation routines are fixed and
slightly rebumped so that it should now be possible to switch between
the interanl kernel console (sc or vt) and a remote kernel console
(sio) again, as it was in 2.x, 3.0 and 3.1.
- Screen savers and splash screen decoders
Because of the header file reorganization described above, screen
savers and splash screen decoders are slightly modified. After this
update, /sys/modules/syscons/saver.h is no longer necessary and is
removed.
The cdevsw_add() function now finds the major number(s) in the
struct cdevsw passed to it. cdevsw_add_generic() is no longer
needed, cdevsw_add() does the same thing.
cdevsw_add() will print an message if the d_maj field looks bogus.
Remove nblkdev and nchrdev variables. Most places they were used
bogusly. Instead check a dev_t for validity by seeing if devsw()
or bdevsw() returns NULL.
Move bdevsw() and devsw() functions to kern/kern_conf.c

use ALPHA_PHYS_TO_K0SEG(offset) rather than just plain offet. I've verified
that this does not break other platforms (I've tested an AlphaStation 200
and a Personal Workstation 500au with this patch).
As to why this works, well.. Its black magic as far as I know. I obtained
this hack from Myricom, who in turn, obtained it from Compaq engineers.
Without this hack, XFree86 cannot talk to a PCI graphics card.

I have made a 'reinstall' target (like in ports, and reinstall.debug)
This is most useful if you want to keep /kernel.old as a known bootable
kernel. If you test a new kernel and have to reboot for a fix, a
'make reinstall' will install the new kernel over the top of the old
non-viable one, leaving the old one untouched. This is mainly meant
for development, not general users.
Made a new (inline) function devsw(dev_t dev) and substituted it.
Changed to the BDEV variant to this format as well: bdevsw(dev_t dev)

PV_TABLE_REF cleared before PV_TABLE_MOD, the page may get fault on read again.
On fault on write, pmap_emulate_reference mark the page dirty with
vm_page_dirty. That decrease ill effects of the bug.
The problem probably become more serious after my rev.1.18 a week ago.
- %fs register is added to trapframe and saved/restored upon kernel entry/exit.
- Per-cpu pages are no longer mapped at the same virtual address.
- Each cpu now has a separate gdt selector table. A new segment selector
is added to point to per-cpu pages, per-cpu global variables are now
accessed through this new selector (%fs). The selectors in gdt table are
rearranged for cache line optimization.
- fask_vfork is now on as default for both UP and SMP.
- Some aio code cleanup.

Interrupts under the new scheme are managed by the i386 nexus with the
awareness of the resource manager. There is further room for optimizing
the interfaces still. All the users of register_intr()/intr_create()
should be gone, with the exception of pcic and i386/isa/clock.c.
alpha/include/lock.h: remove nop simplelock macros, which are defined
in <sys/lock.h> if NCPUS == 1.
As a result, NULL_SIMPLELOCK is defined, and a few warnings removed.
i386 platform boots, it is no longer ISA-centric, and is fully dynamic.
Most old drivers compile and run without modification via 'compatability
shims' to enable a smoother transition. eisa, isapnp and pccard* are
not yet using the new resource manager. Once fully converted, all drivers
will be loadable, including PCI and ISA.
(Some other changes appear to have snuck in, including a port of Soren's
ATA driver to the Alpha. Soren, back this out if you need to.)
This is a checkpoint of work-in-progress, but is quite functional.
The bulk of the work was done over the last few years by Doug Rabson and
Garrett Wollman.

Modify targets for debug kernels: when -g was specified, make will
now build a debug kernel called kernel.debug, and create a stripped
version called kernel at the same time. The two targets install and
install.debug are otherwise unchanged.

Like the PNIC, we have to copy packet headers in the receive handler
because the chip will only DMA to longword aligned buffers.
Also do some mindor cleanups.
the alpha. Now the ThunderLAN driver works on the alpha (both my
sample cards check out.) Update the alpha GENERIC config to include
ThunderLAN driver now that I've tested it.
sys/alpha/conf/GENERIC.
Note: the PNIC ignores the lower few bits of the RX buffer DMA address,
which means we have to add yet another kludge to make it happy. Since
we can't offset the packet data, we copy the first few bytes of the
received data into a separate mbuf with proper alignment. This puts
the IP header where it needs to be to prevent unaligned accesses.
Also modified the PNIC driver to use a non-interrupt driven TX
strategy. This improves performance somewhat on x86/SMP systems where
interrupt delivery doesn't seem to be as fast with an SMP kernel as
with a UP kernel.
- Refined internal interface in keyboard drivers so that:
1. the side effect of device probe is kept minimal,
2. polling mode function is added,
3. and new ioctl and configuration options are added (see below).
- Added new ioctl: KDSETREPEAT
Set keyboard typematic rate. There has existed an ioctl command,
KDSETRAD, for the same purpose. However, KDSETRAD is dependent on
the AT keyboard. KDSETREPEAT provides more generic interface.
KDSETRAD will still be supported in the atkbd driver.
- Added new configuration options:
ATKBD_DFLT_KEYMAP
Specify a keymap to be used as the default, built-in keymap.
(There has been undocumented options, DKKEYMAP, UKKEYMAP, GRKEYMAP,
SWKEYMAP, RUKEYMAP, ESKEYMAP, and ISKEYMAP to set the default keymap.
These options are now gone for good. The new option is more general.)

PQ_FREE. There is little operational difference other then the kernel
being a few kilobytes smaller and the code being more readable.
* vm_page_select_free() has been *greatly* simplified.
* The PQ_ZERO page queue and supporting structures have been removed
* vm_page_zero_idle() revamped (see below)
PG_ZERO setting and clearing has been migrated from vm_page_alloc()
to vm_page_free[_zero]() and will eventually be guarenteed to remain
tracked throughout a page's life ( if it isn't already ).
When a page is freed, PG_ZERO pages are appended to the appropriate
tailq in the PQ_FREE queue while non-PG_ZERO pages are prepended.
When locating a new free page, PG_ZERO selection operates from within
vm_page_list_find() ( get page from end of queue instead of beginning
of queue ) and then only occurs in the nominal critical path case. If
the nominal case misses, both normal and zero-page allocation devolves
into the same _vm_page_list_find() select code without any specific
zero-page optimizations.
Additionally, vm_page_zero_idle() has been revamped. Hysteresis has been
added and zero-page tracking adjusted to conform with the other changes.
Currently hysteresis is set at 1/3 (lo) and 1/2 (hi) the number of free
pages. We may wish to increase both parameters as time permits. The
hysteresis is designed to avoid silly zeroing in borderline allocation/free
situations.
to an architecture-specific value defined in <machine/elf.h>. This
solves problems on large-memory systems that have a high value for
MAXDSIZ.
The load address is controlled by a new macro ELF_RTLD_ADDR(vmspace).
On the i386 it is hard-wired to 0x08000000, which is the standard
SVR4 location for the dynamic linker.
On the Alpha, the dynamic linker is loaded MAXDSIZ bytes beyond
the start of the program's data segment. This is the same place
a userland mmap(0, ...) call would put it, so it ends up just below
all the shared libraries. The rationale behind the calculation is
that it allows room for the data segment to grow to its maximum
possible size.
These changes have been tested on the i386 for several months
without problems. They have been tested on the Alpha as well,
though not for nearly as long. I would like to merge the changes
into 3.1 within a week if no problems have surfaced as a result of
them.

- Store the current video mode information in the `video_adapter' struct.
- The size of the `v_offscreensize' field in the VESA mode information
block is u_int16, not u_int8.
This changes the definitions of a few items so that structures are the
same whether or not the option itself is enabled. This allows
people to enable and disable the option without recompilng the world.

XXX configure_start() and configure_end() seem to be a bit excessive.. both
here and in the i386 code.
Iprobe is an alpha-only system profiling suite which I'm porting from
Linux/alpha to FreeBSD.
Iprobe works by using the hardware profiling support built into
alpha cpus. In a nutshell, what Iprobe does is to setup the alpha
performance counters to sample the pc at a fairly high rate & dumps
those pc samples out to user space. Then some code runs to map the
sampled PCs to functions. You get a bit more than that (like the PSL
word, so you can tell if you're in the kernel or userland, what the
ipl is, etc).
o Add the EB64PLUS systype into the kernel configuration files
and add it to the GENERIC kernel
o Correct mcclock_isa.c's dependence on cia, it should depend on isa.
This will allow avanti and eb64+ kernels to be built without the cia
chipset support code.
The new file pci_eb64plus_intr.s deals with the interrupt hardware
on the EB64PLUS and was obtained from NetBSD with the NetBSD
copyright intact
The apecs chipset support code was altered to allow routing interrupts
through pci if we're not running on an avanti. Avanti's route all
interrupts through isa.

The pointer was only wanted in one place in kern_exec.c. Applications
should use the kern.ps_strings sysctl instead of PS_STRINGS, so they
shouldn't notice this change.

This should fix the requirement that make depend be done starting from
a clean config directory. If you don't have a clean directory, make

alpha, operations involving non-finite numbers or denormalised numbers
or operations which should generate such numbers will cause an arithmetic
exception. For programs which follow some strict code generation rules,
the kernel trap handler can then 'complete' the operation by emulating
the faulting instruction.
To use software completion, a program must be compiled with the arguments
'-mtrap-precision=i' and '-mfp-trap-mode=su' or '-mfp-trap-mode=sui'.
Programs compiled in this way can use non-finite and denormalised numbers
at the expense of slightly less efficient code generation of floating
point instructions. Programs not compiled with these options will receive
a SIGFPE signal when non-finite or denormalised numbers are used or
generated.

The ISA drivers' use of the new resource api is minimal. Garrett has

This is the bulk of the support for doing kld modules. Two linker_sets
were replaced by SYSINIT()'s. VFS's and exec handlers are self registered.
kld is now a superset of lkm. I have converted most of them, they will
follow as a seperate commit as samples.
This all still works as a static a.out kernel using LKM's.
independent elf loader and have access to kld modules. Jordan and I were
not sure how to create boot floppies, and the things we tried just made
SRM laugh in our faces - but it was upset at boot1 which was not touched
by these changes. Essentially this has been untested. :-(
What this does is to steal the last three slots from the nine spare longs
in the bootinfo_v1 struct to pass the module base pointer through.
The startup code now to set up and fills in the module and environment
structures, hopefully close enough to the i386 layout to be able to use
the same kernel code. We now pass though the updated end of the kernel

support files have had to be copied to sys/alpha/include since userland
programs expect to find them in <machine/*.h>.
All the revision history of the i386 syscons has been retained by a
repository copy.
saver and splash screen can all work properly with syscons. Note that
the splash screen option (SC_SPLASH_SCREEN) does not work yet, as it
requires additional code from msmith.
- Reorganized the splash screen code to match the latest development
in this area.
- Delay screen switch in `switch_scr()' until the screen saver is
stopped, if one is running,
- Start the screen saver immediately, if any, when the `saver' key is
pressed. (There will be another commit for `kbdcontrol' to support

The patch supports using the X10 Mouse Remote in both stand-alone and
pass-through configurations, so you can plug your mouse and remote into the
same serial port, use the mouse for X, and use the remote for other apps
like Fxtv. For instance, we can now control fxtv via the remote control
just like a TV : change channels, mute, increase volume, zoom video,
freeze frame 8)
The mouse events are channeled through the syscons/sysmouse I/F like
normal, and the remote buttons are "syphoned off" to a UNIX-domain stream
socket (defined as _PATH_MOUSEREMOTE in <machine/mouse.h>) for a
remote-aware app to grab and use.

recommended for all devices which support attached children.
* In addition, the alpha port defines two simple interfaces 'clock'
for attaching various real time clocks to the system and 'mcclock'
for the many different variations of mc146818 clocks which can be
attached to different alpha platforms. This eliminates two more
function pointer tables in favour of the generic method dispatch

work in progress and has never booted a real machine. Initial
development and testing was done using SimOS (see
http://simos.stanford.edu for details). On the SimOS simulator, this
port successfully reaches single-user mode and has been tested with
loads as high as one copy of /bin/ls :-).

FreeBSD/alpha. The most significant item is to change the command
argument to ioctl functions from int to u_long. This change brings us
inline with various other BSD versions. Driver writers may like to
use (__FreeBSD_version == 300003) to detect this change.
The prototype FreeBSD/alpha machdep will follow in a couple of days
time.
Linux emulation. This make Allegro Common Lisp 4.3 work under
FreeBSD!

- The `psm' driver is made to recognize various models of PS/2 mice
and enable their extra features so that their additional buttons and
wheel/roller are recognized. The name of the detected model will be
printed at boot time.
- A set of new ioctl functions are added to the `psm', `mse' and
`sysmouse' drivers so that the userland program (such as the X server)
can query device information and change driver settings.
- The wheel/roller movement is handled as the `Z' axis movement by the
mouse drivers and the moused daemon. The Z axis movement may be mapped
to another axis movement or buttons.
- The mouse drivers support a new, standard mouse data format,
MOUSE_PROTO_SYSMOUSE format which can encode x, y, and x axis movement
and up to 10 buttons.

- Added a set of functions to detect various mice which have additional
features (wheel and buttons) unavailable in the standard PS/2 mouse.
- Refined existing ioctl functions and added new ones. Most important
of all is MOUSE_SETLEVEL which manipulates the output level of the driver.
While the output level remains zero, the output from the `psm' driver is
in the standard PS/2 mouse format (three bytes long). When the level
is set to one, the `psm' driver will send data in the extended format.
At the level two the driver uses the format which is native to the
connected mouse is used. (Meaning that the output from the device is
passed to the caller as is, unmodified.) The `psm' driver will pass
such extended data format as is to the caller if the output level is
two, but emulates the standard format if the output level is zero.
- Added kernel configuration flags to set initial resolution
(PSM_CONFIG_RESOLUTION) and acceleration (PSM_CONFIG_ACCEL).
- Removed the compile options PSM_ACCEL, PSM_CHECKSYNC and PSM_EMULATION.
Acceleration ratio is now specified by the kernel configuration flags
stated above. Sync check logic is refined and now standard.
The sync check can be turned off by the new kernel configuration flags
PSM_CONFIG_NOCHECKSYNC (0x100). PSM_EMULATION has been of little use.

Most importantly, the MOUSE_SETLEVEL ioctl will change the

Boy, I'm glad we're not using sup anymore. This update would have been

1. All the suggestions earlier made by Bruce: renaming some symbols,
stricter error checking, removing redundant code, etc.
2. The `psm' driver preserves the default counter resolution and
report rate, whatever they are after reset. (Based on reports and
suggestion from Nate and Rob Bolin).
3. The `psm' driver now does not check the so-called sync. bit in the
first byte of the data packet by default, so that the tapping feature
of ALPUS GlidePoint works (based on reports from Louis Mamakos). I
tested the code with ALPUS Desktop GlidePoint (M/N GP101) and found
no problem; tapping worked. It appears ALPUS produces several models
of GlidePoint. I hope the other models are OK too.
The check code can still be activated by defining the PSM_CHECKSYNC
option in the config file. (The bit checking slightly reduces, if not
completely eliminates, weird mouse behavior cased by unsynchronized
mouse data packets. It also helps us to detect if the mouse interrupt
can ever be lost. But, well, if there are devices which cannot be
supported this way...)
4. The `psm' driver does not include the protocol emulation code by
default. The code can still be compiled in if the PSM_EMULATION option
is specified in the config file. Louis Mamakos suggests the emulation
code is putting too much in the kernel, and `moused' works well.
I will think about this later and decide if the entire emulation
code should be removed.
5. And, of course, the fix in `scprobe()' from Bruce to cure the
UserConfig problem. My code in `kbdio.c' is slightly different from
his patch, but has the same effect. There still is a possibility that
`scprobe()' gets confused, if, for whatever reasons, the user holds
down a key for very long time during the boot process. But we cannot
cope with everything, can we?

This also fixes the breakage that I introduced to the psm driver by
