The coremask option in DPDK is difficult to use and we should be
promoting the use of the corelist (-l) option. The patch
adjusts the docs to use -l EAL option instead of the -c option.
The patch only changes the docs and not the code as the -c option
will continue to exist unless it is removed in the future. The -c
option should be kept to maintain backward compatibility.

Every cells of a driver column are painted in yellow.
The trick is to generate some empty content as a big column
above and below the pointed cell.
The position: relative attribute is used for the highlight position
but it makes the border to disappear.
The overflow: hidden attribute is used to mask the generated content
outside of the table.
The class .wy-nav-content has a background which masks the highlighting.
Setting an opacity lower than 1, creates a new stack context and let
the column highlight to be shown.
The background of odd rows was grey and opaque. It is redefined with
a transparent alpha ratio in order to see highlighting on such rows.

A new parameter is planned to be added in 17.05 release in

I made a vhost ABI/API refactoring at v16.04, meant to avoid such issue
forever. Well, apparently, I lied.
People are looking for more vhost-user options now days, other than
vhost-user net only. For example, SPDK (Storage Performance Development
Kit) are looking for chance of vhost-user SCSI and vhost-user block.
Apparently, they also need a vhost-user backend, while DPDK already
has a (mature enough) backend, they don't want to implement it again
from scratch. They want to leverage the one DPDK provides.
However, the last refactoring hasn't done that right, at least it's
not friendly for extending vhost-user to add more devices support.
For example, different virtio devices has its own feature set, while
APIs like rte_vhost_feature_disable(feature_mask) have no option to
tell the device type. Thus, a more proper API should look like:
rte_vhost_feature_disable(device_type, feature_mask);
Besides that, few public files and structures should be renamed, to
not let it bind to virtio-net. Specifically, they are:
- virtio_net_device_ops --> vhost_device_ops
- rte_virtio_net.h --> rte_vhost.h

This ABI changes to remove iomem and ioport mapping in igb_uio. The
purpose of this changes was to fix a bug: when DPDK app crashes,
those devices by igb_uio are not stopped either DPDK PMD driver or
igb_uio driver.
Then it has been pointed out by Stephen Hemminger that it has
backward compatibility issue: cannot run old version DPDK on
modified igb_uio.
However, we still have not figure out a new way to fix this bug
without this change. Let's postpone this deprecation announcement
in case this change cannot be avoided.

Current Cryptodev AES-NI GCM PMD is implemented using Multi Buffer
Crypto library.This patch reimplement the device using ISA-L Crypto
library: https://github.com/01org/isa-l_crypto.
The migration entailed the following additional support for:
* GMAC algorithm.
* 256-bit cipher key.
* Session-less mode.
* Out-of place processing
* Scatter-gatter support for chained mbufs (only out-of place and

Release v0.44 of Intel(R) Multi-Buffer Crypto for IPsec library adds
support for AVX512 instructions. This patch enables the new AVX512
accelerated functions from the aesni_mb_pmd crypto poll mode driver.
This patch set requires that the aesni_mb_pmd is linked against the
version 0.44 or greater of the Multi-Buffer Crypto for IPsec library.

Elastic Flow Distributor (EFD) is a distributor library that uses
perfect hashing to determine a target/value for a given incoming flow key.
It has the following advantages:
- First, because it uses perfect hashing, it does not store
the key itself and hence lookup performance is not dependent
on the key size.
- Second, the target/value can be any arbitrary value hence
the system designer and/or operator can better optimize service rates
and inter-cluster network traffic locating.
- Third, since the storage requirement is much smaller than a hash-based
flow table (i.e. better fit for CPU cache), EFD can scale to
millions of flow keys.
Finally, with current optimized library implementation performance
is fully scalable with number of CPU cores.

Because using a NFP PMD requires specific BSP installed, the PMD
support was not the default option before. This was just for making
people aware of such dependency, since there is no need for such a

The enic TSO implementation requires that the length of the Eth/IP/TCP
headers be passed to the NIC. Other than that, it's just a matter of
setting the mss and offload mode on a per packet basis.
In TSO mode, IP and TCP checksums are offloaded even if not requested
with mb->ol_flags.

Add support for 8.14.x.x firmware.
The new firmware adds support for external PHY BCM8485x; configures
fixed link speed with transceiver/cable not supporting negotiation;
supports engine swap; supports overriding PCIe preset equalization
value; checks pause too long for ports and reads die temperature
every second for shutdown threshold.
It includes change in FLR flow when there is a SW initiated FLR.

The PMD allows for DPDK and the host to communicate using a raw
device interface on the host and in the DPDK application. The device
created is a Tap device with a L2 packet header.

Last changes in Niantic and Fortville NIC drivers causes that
vector Rx path is chosen by default in l3fwd-thread application.
This path doesn't support propagation of hw packet type recognition
to the packet_type field in mbuf, and packets cannot be classified
properly.
The approach to solve this problem is similar to the commit:
71a7e2424e ("examples/l3fwd: fix using packet type blindly").
To use sw packet analyzer, new command line option "--parse-ptype" is
introduced.

L3 Forwarding sample app user guides have some inconsistencies
between the example command line and the configuration table.
Also, they were showing too complicated configuration, using two
different NUMA nodes for two ports, which will probably lead
to performance drop due to use cross-socket channel.
This patch simplifies the configuration of these examples,
by using a single NUMA node and a single queue per port.

This patch mainly allocates structure to store queue/irq mapping,
and configure queue/irq mapping down through PCI ops. It also creates
eventfds for each Rx queue and tell the kernel about the eventfd/intr
binding.
Note: So far, we hard-code 1:1 queue/irq mapping (each rx queue has
one exclusive interrupt), like this:
vec 0 -> config irq
vec 1 -> rxq0
vec 2 -> rxq1
...
which means, the "vectors" option of QEMU should be configured with
a value >= N+1 (N is the number of the queue pairs).

This patch add support vhost kernel as the backend for virtio_user.
Three main hook functions are added:
- vhost_kernel_setup() to open char device, each vq pair needs one
vhostfd;
- vhost_kernel_ioctl() to communicate control messages with vhost
kernel module;
- vhost_kernel_enable_queue_pair() to open tap device and set it
as the backend of corresonding vhost fd (that is to say, vq pair).

The introduce of virtio 1.0 support brings yet another set of ops, badly,
it's not handled correctly, that it breaks the multiple process support.
The issue is the data/function pointer may vary from different processes,
and the old used to do one time set (for primary process only). That
said, the function pointer the secondary process saw is actually from the
primary process space. Accessing it could likely result to a crash.
Kudos to the last patches, we now be able to maintain those info that may
vary among different process locally, meaning every process could have its
own copy for each of them, with the correct value set. And this is what
this patch does:
- remap the PCI (IO port for legacy device and memory map for modern
device)
- set vtpci_ops correctly
After that, multiple process would work like a charm. (At least, it
passed my fuzzy test)

scheme defined in IEEE 802.1AE that uses symmetric cryptography.

Attaching and detaching ethernet ports from an application
is not the same thing as physically removing a PCI device,
so clarify the flags indicating support. All PCI devices
are assumed to be physically removable, so no flag is
necessary in the PCI layer.

Leaving default pattern item mask values up for interpretation by PMDs is
an undefined behavior that applications might find difficult to use in the
wild. It also needlessly complicates PMD implementation.
This commit addresses this by defining consistent default masks for each
item type.

Contrary to the current description, mbuf RSS hash result storage does not
overlap with the returned MARK value (hash.fdir.lo vs. hash.fdir.hi), and
both may be combined.
Reflect this change by allowing testpmd to display both values
simultaneously.

Both actions share the PKT_RX_FDIR mbuf flag, as a result there is no way
to tell them apart. Moreover, the maximum allowed value for the MARK action
may not necessarily cover the entire 32-bit space.

Today, all logs whose level is lower than INFO are dropped at
compile-time. This prevents from enabling debug logs at runtime using
--log-level=8.
The rationale was to remove debug logs from the data path at
compile-time, avoiding a test at run-time.
This patch changes the behavior of RTE_LOG() to avoid the compile-time
optimization, and introduces the RTE_LOG_DP() macro that has the same
behavior than the previous RTE_LOG(), for the rare cases where debug
logs are in the data path.
So it is now possible to enable debug logs at run-time by just
specifying --log-level=8. Some drivers still have special compile-time
options to enable more debug log. Maintainers may consider to
remove/reduce them.

In igb_uio, iomem is mapped, and both ioport and io mem are recorded
into uio framework (then into sysfs files), which is duplicated with
what Linux has already provided for user space, and makes the code
too complex.
For iomem, DPDK user space code never opens or reads files under
/sys/pci/bus/devices/xxxx:xx:xx.x/uio/uioY/maps/. Instead,
/sys/pci/bus/devices/xxxx:xx:xx.x/resourceY are used to map device
memory.
For ioport, non-x86 platforms cannot read from files under
/sys/pci/bus/devices/xxxx:xx:xx.x/uio/uioY/portio/ directly, because
non-x86 platforms need to map port region for access in user space,
see non-x86 version pci_uio_ioport_map(). x86 platforms can use the
the same way as uio_pci_generic.
This will remove iomem and ioport mapping in igb_uio kernel module,
and adjusts the iomem implementation in both igb_uio and
uio_pci_generic:
- for x86 platform, get ports info from /proc/ioports;
- for non-x86 platform, map and get ports info by pci_uio_ioport_map().
Note: this will affect those applications who are using files under
/sys/pci/bus/devices/xxxx:xx:xx.x/uio/uioY/maps/ and
/sys/pci/bus/devices/xxxx:xx:xx.x/uio/uioY/portio/.

L3fwd-power app needs vector mode to be disabled in order to work
properly. The app used to work previously, because it was using
Rx scalar function, but now it uses vector function.
Vector mode needs to be disabled to make the app works,
which has been documented in release notes.

Turning off S-TAG identification will impact floating VEB,
VFs can't communicate with each other.

For vhost-switch sample, the old guide takes too many words on
vhost-cuse, which is mainly due to vhost-cuse is invented before
vhost-user.
Now vhost-cuse is removed, meaning the best part of the doc is useless.
Instead of amending one piece here and there, this patch simply removes
the most part of the doc and replace it with a simple test guide.
For tep_term sample, mainly for removing the part has "vhost-cuse".

picked up by html/pdf/man-page docs.
That knowledge was available before but spread in various docs along
examples (which are great and have to be kept) as well as in the
--usage/--help option of the tool itself.
As a root only program in sbin it should belong to section 8
"8 System administration commands (usually only for root)"

This enables the rendering of rst into man pages as well as installing
them (if built) along the binaries. To do so there is a new make target
"doc-guides-man" which will render the rst files into man format.
Currently these three tools had docs that were compatible "enough" to
make up for a reasonable manpage.
- testpmd
- dpdk-pdump
- dpdk-procinfo
Since a man page should be installed along the binary they are not
installed in install-doc but install-runtime insteade. If not explicitly
built by the "doc-guides-man" target before calling install-runtime
there is no change to the old behaviour.

It is done to better name association with library because

The final parameter to rte_pmd_ixgbe_set_vf_vlan_insert is uint8_t
and treated as a binary flag when it needs to be a uint16_t
and treated as a VLAN id. The data sheet (sect 8.2.3.27.13) describes
the right most 16 bits as the VLAN id that is to be inserted; the
16.11 code is accepting only a 1 or 0 thus effectively only
allowing the VLAN id 1 to be inserted (0 disables the insertion
setting).
This patch changes the final parm name to represent the data that
is being accepted (vlan_id), changes the type to permit all valid
VLAN ids, and validates the parameter based on the range of 0 to
4095. Corresponding changes to prototype and documentation in the
.h file.

The QEDE PMD now uses unzipped firmware file eliminating the dependency
on zlib. Hence remove LDLIBS entry form the Makefile and enable qede
PMD by default.

Add support to send PF FLR request to the management firmware to
bringup the device in clean slate. This cleanup is necessary
in some corner cases where the device would be left in a bad
state from its previous operations. The driver will send PF FLR
request before slowpath initialization.

Previous release of the qede PMD had a limitation that the
driver expects the number of tx and rx queues to be the same.

In mac-vlan mode, MAC address mask is not supported by HW.
The MAC address mask should not be set in mac-vlan mode.
Remove this parameter from the CLI. Remove MAC address
from mask print too.

ZUC PMD cannot be built as a shared library, due to
the fact that some assembly code in the underlying libsso
library is not relocatable.
This will be fixed in the future, but for the moment,
it is added as a limitationof the PMD.

1300 series Cisco adapter firmware version 2.0(13) for UCS
C-series servers and 3.1(2) for blade servers supports more
filtering capabilities. The feature can be enabled via Cisco
CIMC or USCM with the 'advanced filters' radio button. When

When receiving coalesced packets in virtio, the original size of the
segments is provided. This is a useful information because it allows to
resegment with the same size.
Add a RX new flag in mbuf, that can be set when packets are coalesced by
a hardware or virtual driver when the m->tso_segsz field is valid and is
set to the segment size of original packets.
This flag is used in next commits in the virtio pmd.

Following discussions in [1] and [2], introduce a new bit to
describe the Rx checksum status in mbuf.
Before this patch, only one flag was available:
PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_BAD: L4 cksum of RX pkt. is not OK.
And same for L3:
PKT_RX_IP_CKSUM_BAD: IP cksum of RX pkt. is not OK.
This had 2 issues:
- it was not possible to differentiate "checksum good" from
"checksum unknown".
- it was not possible for a virtual driver to say "the checksum
in packet may be wrong, but data integrity is valid".
This patch tries to solve this issue by having 4 states (2 bits)
for the IP and L4 Rx checksums. New values are:
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_UNKNOWN: no information about the RX L4 checksum
-> the application should verify the checksum by sw
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_BAD: the L4 checksum in the packet is wrong
-> the application can drop the packet without additional check
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_GOOD: the L4 checksum in the packet is valid
-> the application can accept the packet without verifying the
checksum by sw
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_NONE: the L4 checksum is not correct in the packet
data, but the integrity of the L4 data is verified.
-> the application can process the packet but must not verify the
checksum by sw. It has to take care to recalculate the cksum
if the packet is transmitted (either by sw or using tx offload)
And same for L3 (replace L4 by IP in description above).
This commit tries to be compatible with existing applications that
only check the existing flag (CKSUM_BAD).

This function can be used to calculate the checksum of data embedded in
mbuf, that can be composed of several segments.
This function will be used by the virtio pmd in next commits to calculate
the checksum in software in case the protocol is not recognized.

testpmd is creating a bonding device with the old prefix.
It is changed for consistency.

l2fwd could be useful for testing virtual devices without the need
of physical ones.
To achieve this, this patch adds a new option to enable/disable the
MAC addresses updating done at forwarding time: --[no-]mac-updating
It enables the use of l2fwd for basic VM to VM communication.
By default, MAC address updating remains enabled, to keep consistency
with previous usage.

The GCC 4.9 -march option supports the intel code names for processors,
for example -march=silvermont, -march=broadwell.
The RTE_MACHINE config flag can be used to pass code name to
the compiler as -march flag.
Release notes is updated.
Linux and FreeBSD getting started guides are updated with recommended
gcc version as 4.9 and above.
Some of the gmake command examples in sample application guide and driver
guides are updated with gcc version as 4.9.

Dumping the packet type is useful for debug purposes. Instead
of having each application providing its function to do that,
introduce functions to do it.
It factorizes the code and reduces the risk of desynchronization between
the new packet types and the dump function.

Introduce the function rte_net_get_ptype() that parses a mbuf and
returns its packet type. For now, the following packet types are parsed:
L2: Ether
L3: IPv4, IPv6
L4: TCP, UDP, SCTP
The goal here is to provide a reference implementation for packet type
parsing. This function will be used by testpmd in next commits, allowing
to compare its result with the value given by the hardware.
This function will also be useful when implementing Rx offload support
in virtio pmd. Indeed, the virtio protocol gives the csum start and
offset, but it does not give the L4 protocol nor it tells if the
checksum is relevant for inner or outer. This information has to be
known to properly set the ol_flags in mbuf.

Introduce a new function to read the packet data from an mbuf chain. It
linearizes the data if required, and also ensures that the mbuf is large
enough.
This function is used in next commits that add a software parser to
retrieve the packet type.

NIST SP800-38A recommends two methods to generate unpredictable IVs
(Initilisation Vector) for CBC mode:
1) Apply the forward function to a nonce (ie. counter)
2) Use a FIPS-approved random number generator
This patch implements the first recommended method by using the forward
function to generate the IV.

This code provides the initial implementation of the libcrypto
poll mode driver. All cryptography operations are using Openssl
library crypto API. Each algorithm uses EVP_ interface from
openssl API - which is recommended by Openssl maintainers.
This patch adds libcrypto poll mode driver support to librte_cryptodev
library.
