This commit adds support for lock-free (linked list based) stack mempool
handler.
In mempool_perf_autotest the lock-based stack outperforms the
lock-free handler for certain lcore/alloc count/free count
combinations*, however:
- For applications with preemptible pthreads, a standard (lock-based)
stack's worst-case performance (i.e. one thread being preempted while
holding the spinlock) is much worse than the lock-free stack's.
- Using per-thread mempool caches will largely mitigate the performance
difference.
*Test setup: x86_64 build with default config, dual-socket Xeon E5-2699 v4,
running on isolcpus cores with a tickless scheduler. The lock-based stack's
rate_persec was 0.6x-3.5x the lock-free stack's.

This commit adds support for a lock-free (linked list based) stack to the
stack API. This behavior is selected through a new rte_stack_create() flag,
RTE_STACK_F_LF.
The stack consists of a linked list of elements, each containing a data
pointer and a next pointer, and an atomic stack depth counter.
The lock-free push operation enqueues a linked list of pointers by pointing
the tail of the list to the current stack head, and using a CAS to swing
the stack head pointer to the head of the list. The operation retries if it
is unsuccessful (i.e. the list changed between reading the head and
modifying it), else it adjusts the stack length and returns.
The lock-free pop operation first reserves num elements by adjusting the
stack length, to ensure the dequeue operation will succeed without
blocking. It then dequeues pointers by walking the list -- starting from
the head -- then swinging the head pointer (using a CAS as well). While
walking the list, the data pointers are recorded in an object table.
This algorithm stack uses a 128-bit compare-and-swap instruction, which
atomically updates the stack top pointer and a modification counter, to
protect against the ABA problem.
The linked list elements themselves are maintained in a lock-free LIFO
list, and are allocated before stack pushes and freed after stack pops.
Since the stack has a fixed maximum depth, these elements do not need to be
dynamically created.

Due to internal glibc limitations [1], DPDK may exhaust internal
file descriptor limits when using smaller page sizes, which results
in inability to use system calls such as select() by user
applications.
Single file segments option stores lock files per page to ensure
that pages are deleted when there are no more users, however this
is not necessary because the processes will be holding onto the
pages anyway because of mmap(). Thus, removing pages from the
filesystem is safe even though they may be used by some other
secondary process. As a result, single file segments mode no
longer stores inordinate amounts of segment fd's, and the above
issue with fd limits is solved.
However, this will not work for legacy mem mode. For that, simply
document that using bigger page sizes is the only option.

The DPDK APIs expose 3 different modes to work with memory used for DMA:
1. Use the DPDK owned memory (backed by the DPDK provided hugepages).
This memory is allocated by the DPDK libraries, included in the DPDK
memory system (memseg lists) and automatically DMA mapped by the DPDK
layers.
2. Use memory allocated by the user and register to the DPDK memory
systems. Upon registration of memory, the DPDK layers will DMA map it
to all needed devices. After registration, allocation of this memory
will be done with rte_*malloc APIs.
3. Use memory allocated by the user and not registered to the DPDK memory
system. This is for users who wants to have tight control on this
memory (e.g. avoid the rte_malloc header).
The user should create a memory, register it through rte_extmem_register
API, and call DMA map function in order to register such memory to
the different devices.
The scope of the patch focus on #3 above.
Currently the only way to map external memory is through VFIO
(rte_vfio_dma_map). While VFIO is common, there are other vendors
which use different ways to map memory (e.g. Mellanox and NXP).
The work in this patch moves the DMA mapping to vendor agnostic APIs.
Device level DMA map and unmap APIs were added. Implementation of those
APIs was done currently only for PCI devices.
For PCI bus devices, the pci driver can expose its own map and unmap
functions to be used for the mapping. In case the driver doesn't provide
any, the memory will be mapped, if possible, to IOMMU through VFIO APIs.
Application usage with those APIs is quite simple:
* allocate memory
* call rte_extmem_register on the memory chunk.
* take a device, and query its rte_device.
* call the device specific mapping function for this device.
Future work will deprecate the rte_vfio_dma_map and rte_vfio_dma_unmap
APIs, leaving the rte device APIs as the preferred option for the user.

Initial process requires oncoming changes described in deprecation
notice should be implemented in a RTE_NEXT_ABI gated way.
This has been discussed in technical board, and since this can cause a
multiple #ifdef blocks in multiple locations of the code, can be
confusing specially for the modifications that requires data structure
changes. Anyway this was not happening in practice.
Making RTE_NEXT_ABI usage more optional based on techboard decision:
http://mails.dpdk.org/archives/dev/2019-January/123519.html
The intention with using RTE_NEXT_ABI was to provide more information
to the user about planned changes, and force developer to think more in
coding level. Since RTE_NEXT_ABI become optional, now the preferred way
to do this is, if possible, sending changes, described in deprecation
notice, as a separate patch and reference it in deprecation notice.

GitHub is a service used by developers to store repositories. GitHub
provides service integrations that allow 3rd party services to access
developer repositories and perform actions. One of these services is
Travis-CI, a simple continuous integration platform.
This series introduces the ability for any github mirrors of the DPDK
project, including developer mirrors, to kick off builds under the
travis CI infrastructure. For now, this just means compilation - no
other kinds of automated run exists yet. In the future, this can be
expanded to execute and report results for any test-suites that might
exist.
This is a simple initial implementation of a travis build for the DPDK
project. It doesn't require any changes from individual developers to
enable, but will allow those developers who opt-in to GitHub and the
travis service to get automatic builds for every push they make.
The files added under .ci/ exist so that in the future, other CI
support platforms (such as cirrus, appveyor, etc.) could have a common
place to put their requisite scripts without polluting the main tree.

in 18.08 new cache-aligned structure rte_crypto_asym_op was introduced.
As it also was included into rte_crypto_op, it caused implicit change
in rte_crypto_op layout and alignment: now rte_crypto_op is cache-line
aligned has a hole of 40/104 bytes between phys_addr and sym/asym op.
It looks like unintended ABI breakage, plus such change can cause
negative performance effects:
- now status and sym[0].m_src lies on different cache-lines, so
post-process code would need extra cache-line read.
- new alignment causes grow of the space requirements and cache-line
reads/updates for structures that contain rte_crypto_op inside.
As there seems no actual need to have rte_crypto_asym_op cache-line
aligned, and rte_crypto_asym_op is not intended to be used on it's own -
the simplest fix is just to remove cache-line alignment for it.
As the immediate positive effect: on IA ipsec-secgw performance increased
by 5-10% (depending on the crypto-dev and algo used).
My guess that on machines with 128B cache-line and lookaside-protocol
capable crypto devices the impact will be even more noticeable.

Inner packet matching is currently buggy in many cases.
1. Mishandling null spec ("match any").
The copy_item functions do nothing if spec is null. This is incorrect,
as all patterns should be appended to the L5 pattern buffer even for
null spec (treated as all zeros).
2. Accessing null spec causing segfault.
3. Not setting protocol fields.
The NIC filter API currently has no flags for "match inner IPv4, IPv6,
UDP, TCP, and so on". So, the driver needs to explicitly set EtherType
and IP protocol fields in the L5 pattern buffer to avoid false
positives (e.g. reporting IPv6 as IPv4).
Instead of keep adding "if inner, do something differently" cases to
the existing copy_item functions, introduce separate functions for
inner packet patterns and address the above issues in those
functions. The changes to the previous outer-packet copy_item
functions are mechanical, due to reduced indentation.

Some apps like OVS-DPDK use MARK+RSS flow rules in order to offload
packet matching to the NIC. The RSS action in such flow rules simply
indicates "receive packet normally", not trying to override the port
wide RSS. The action is included in the flow rules simply to terminate
them, as MARK is not a fate-deciding action. And, the RSS action has a
most basic config: default hash, level, types, null key, and identity
queue mapping.
Recent VIC adapters can support these "mark and receive" flow

succeeds. But, the mbuf of a matching IPv4 UDP packet does not have
PKT_RX_FDIR_ID set.
flow create 0 ingress pattern ... actions mark id 0 / queue index 0 / end
The problem has to do with mapping mark IDs (32-bit) to NIC filter
IDs. Filter ID is currently 16-bit, so values greater than 0xffff are
rejected. The firmware reserves filter ID 0 for filters that do not
mark (e.g. steer w/o mark). And, the driver reserves 0xffff for the
flag action. This leaves 1...0xfffe for app use.
It is possible to simply reject mark ID 0 as unsupported. But, 0 is
commonly used (e.g. OVS-DPDK and VPP). So, when adding a filter, set
filter ID = mark ID + 1 to support mark ID 0. The receive handler
subtracts 1 from filter ID to get back the original mark ID.

Since all other apps have been moved to the "app" folder, the autotest app
remains alone in the test folder. Rather than having an entire top-level
folder for this, we can move it back to where it all started in early
versions of DPDK - the "app/" folder.
This move has a couple of advantages:
* This reduces clutter at the top level of the project, due to one less
folder.
* It eliminates the separate build task necessary for building the
autotests using make "make test-build" which means that developers are
less likely to miss something in their own compilation tests
* It re-aligns the final location of the test binary in the app folder when
building with make with it's location in the source tree.
For meson builds, the autotest app is different from the other apps in that
it needs a series of different test cases defined for it for use by "meson
test". Therefore, it does not get built as part of the main loop in the
app folder, but gets built separately at the end.

Since compat library is only a single header, we can easily move it into
the EAL common headers instead of tracking it separately. The downside of
this is that it becomes a little more difficult to have any libs that are
built before EAL depend on it. Thankfully, this is not a major problem as
the only library which uses rte_compat.h and is built before EAL (kvargs)
already has the path to the compat.h header file explicitly called out as
an include path.
However, to ensure that we don't hit problems later with this, we can add
EAL common headers folder to the global include list in the meson build
which means that all common headers can be safely used by all libraries, no
matter what their build order.
As a side-effect, this patch also fixes an issue with building on BSD using
meson, due to compat lib no longer needing to be listed as a dependency.

As of commit 364e08f2bb, DPDK allows an application to send and

following information:
- An introduction, where a brief explanation of this driver is given,
pointing out the dependency on PACKET_MMAP;
- Which options are supported at configuration time, while setting up an
interface, and it's inherent limitations;
- What the prerequisites are;
- A command line example of how to set up a DPDK port using the
af_packet driver.

original Kernel documentation, so the reader can get more details.

Currently, malloc statistics and external heap creation code
use memory hotplug lock as a way to synchronize accesses to
heaps (as in, locking the hotplug lock to prevent list of heaps
from changing under our feet). At the same time, malloc
statistics code will also lock the heap because it needs to
access heap data and does not want any other thread to allocate
anything from that heap.
In such scheme, it is possible to enter a deadlock with the
following sequence of events:
thread 1 thread 2
rte_malloc()
rte_malloc_dump_stats()
take heap lock
take hotplug lock
failed to allocate,
attempt to take
hotplug lock
attempt to take heap lock
Neither thread will be able to continue, as both of them are
waiting for the other one to drop the lock. Adding an
additional lock will require an ABI change, so instead of
that, make malloc statistics calls thread-unsafe with
respect to creating/destroying heaps.

The general use-case of using external memory is well covered by
existing external memory API's. However, certain use cases require
manual management of externally allocated memory areas, so this
memory should not be added to the heap. It should, however, be
added to DPDK's internal structures, so that API's like
``rte_virt2memseg`` would work on such external memory segments.
This commit adds such an API to DPDK. The new functions will allow

well as documentation for them.

Acked-by: Yongseok Koh <yskoh@mellanox.com>
SPDK uses the rte_mem_event_callback_register API to
create RDMA memory regions (MRs) for newly allocated regions
of memory. This is used in both the SPDK NVMe-oF target
and the NVMe-oF host driver.
DPDK creates internal malloc_elem structures for these
allocated regions. As users malloc and free memory, DPDK
will sometimes merge malloc_elems that originated from
different allocations that were notified through the
registered mem_event callback routine. This results
in subsequent allocations that can span across multiple
RDMA MRs. This requires SPDK to check each DPDK buffer to
see if it crosses an MR boundary, and if so, would have to
add considerable logic and complexity to describe that
buffer before it can be accessed by the RNIC. It is somewhat
analagous to rte_malloc returning a buffer that is not
IOVA-contiguous.
As a malloc_elem gets split and some of these elements
get freed, it can also result in DPDK sending an
RTE_MEM_EVENT_FREE notification for a subset of the
original RTE_MEM_EVENT_ALLOC notification. This is also
problematic for RDMA memory regions, since unregistering
the memory region is all-or-nothing. It is not possible
to unregister part of a memory region.
To support these types of applications, this patch adds
a new --match-allocations EAL init flag. When this
flag is specified, malloc elements from different
hugepage allocations will never be merged. Memory will
also only be freed back to the system (with the requisite
memory event callback) exactly as it was originally
allocated.
Since part of this patch is extending the size of struct
malloc_elem, we also fix up the malloc autotests so they
do not assume its size exactly fits in one cacheline.

Below are details and reasoning for proposed changes.
1.rte_cryptodev_sym_session_init()/ rte_cryptodev_sym_session_clear()
operate based on cytpodev device id, though inside
rte_cryptodev_sym_session device specific data is addressed
by driver id (not device id).
That creates a problem with current implementation when we have
two or more devices with the same driver used by the same session.
Consider the following example:
struct rte_cryptodev_sym_session *sess;
rte_cryptodev_sym_session_init(dev_id=X, sess, ...);
rte_cryptodev_sym_session_init(dev_id=Y, sess, ...);
rte_cryptodev_sym_session_clear(dev_id=X, sess);
After that point if X and Y uses the same driver,
then sess can't be used by device Y any more.
The reason for that - driver specific (not device specific)
data per session, plus there is no information
how many device instances use that data.
Probably the simplest way to deal with that issue -
add a reference counter per each driver data.
2.rte_cryptodev_sym_session_set_user_data() and
rte_cryptodev_sym_session_get_user_data() -
with current implementation there is no defined way for the user to
determine what is the max allowed size of the private data.
rte_cryptodev_sym_session_set_user_data() just blindly copies
user provided data without checking memory boundaries violation.
To overcome that issue propose to add 'uint16_t priv_size' into
rte_cryptodev_sym_session structure.
3.rte_cryptodev_sym_session contains an array of variable size for
driver specific data.
Though number of elements in that array is determined by static
variable nb_drivers, that could be modified by
rte_cryptodev_allocate_driver().
That construction seems to work ok so far, as right now users register
all their PMDs at startup, though it doesn't mean that it would always
remain like that.
To make it less error prone propose to add 'uint16_t nb_drivers'
into the rte_cryptodev_sym_session structure.
At least that allows related functions to check that provided
driver id wouldn't overrun variable array boundaries,
again it allows to determine size of already allocated session
without accessing global variable.
4.#2 and #3 above implies that now each struct rte_cryptodev_sym_session
would have sort of readonly type data (init once at allocation time,
keep unmodified through session life-time).
That requires more changes in current cryptodev implementation:
Right now inside cryptodev framework both rte_cryptodev_sym_session
and driver specific session data are two completely different sctrucures
(e.g. struct cryptodev_sym_session and struct null_crypto_session).
Though current cryptodev implementation implicitly assumes that driver
will allocate both of them from within the same mempool.
Plus this is done in a manner that they override each other fields
(reuse the same space - sort of implicit C union).
That's probably not the best programming practice,
plus make impossible to have readonly fields inside both of them.
To overcome that situation propose to changed an API a bit, to allow
to use two different mempools for these two distinct data structures.
5. Add 'uint64_t userdata' inside struct rte_cryptodev_sym_session.
I suppose that self-explanatory, and might be used in a lot of places
(would be quite useful for ipsec library we develop).
The new proposed layout for rte_cryptodev_sym_session:
struct rte_cryptodev_sym_session {
uint64_t userdata;
/**< Can be used for external metadata */
uint16_t nb_drivers;
/**< number of elements in sess_data array */
uint16_t priv_size;
/**< session private data will be placed after sess_data */
__extension__ struct {
void *data;
uint16_t refcnt;
} sess_data[0];
/**< Driver specific session material, variable size */
};

Currently, the most complete (but still incomplete) user guide for
EAL command-line parameters resides in user guide for testpmd.
This is wrong on multiple levels, and should not be the case.
To fix it, we have to create a document that lists all supported
EAL command-line arguments. However, because different platforms
support different subsets of available EAL parameters, instead of
creating a single file, we will create a common file in
doc/guides/common containing documentation for EAL parameters
that are supported on all of our supported platforms (Linux and
FreeBSD at the time of this writing).
We will then include this document in the Getting Started guides
for all supported platforms, so that any changes made to
documentation for commonly supported EAL parameters will be
reflected in Getting Started guides for all platforms.
This patch also removes EAL parameters documentation from the
testpmd user guide, and instead adds references to the newly
created documents in both testpmd user guides and in sample
applications guide.

read-modify-write could drop performance a lot. On the other hand, writing
extra data will consume more PCIe bandwidth and could also drop the maximum
throughput. It is recommended to empirically set this parameter. Disabled
by default.

In __rte_ring_move_prod_head, move the __atomic_load_n up and out of
the do {} while loop as upon failure the old_head will be updated,
another load is costly and not necessary.
This helps a little on the latency,about 1~5%.
