This updates mlx4 documentation and DPDK release notes
to reflect the PMD support for rdma-core from linux-rdma.
- PMD is now freed from Mellanox OFED and now only depends on the
public rdma-core package (v15 and above) instead.
(see https://github.com/linux-rdma/rdma-core/releases)
This PMD should run under Linux v4.14 and above.
- In case any of the above requirements can't be satisfied,
Mellanox OFED v4.2 and above also provide an updated rdma-core
as well back-ported kernel modules for most Linux distributions
and previous Linux versions.

PKT_RX_VLAN_PKT and PKT_RX_QINQ_PKT are deprecated for a while.
As explained in [1], these flags were kept to let the applications and
PMDs move to the new flag. There is also a need to support Rx vlan
offload without vlan strip (at least for the ixgbe driver).
This patch renames the old flags for this feature, knowing that some
PMDs were using PKT_RX_VLAN_PKT and PKT_RX_QINQ_PKT to indicate that
the vlan tci has been saved in the mbuf structure.
It is likely that some PMDs do not set the proper flags when doing vlan
offload, and it would be worth making a pass on all of them.

This patch dissociates single-queue indirection tables and hash QP objects
from Rx queue structures to relinquish their control to users through the
RSS flow rule action, while simultaneously allowing multiple queues to be
associated with RSS contexts.
Flow rules share identical RSS contexts (hashed fields, hash key, target
queues) to save on memory and other resources. The trade-off is some added
complexity due to reference counters management on RSS contexts.
The QUEUE action is re-implemented on top of an automatically-generated
single-queue RSS context.
The following hardware limitations apply to RSS contexts:
- The number of queues in a group must be a power of two.
- Queue indices must be consecutive, for instance the [0 1 2 3] set is
allowed, however [3 2 1 0], [0 2 1 3] and [0 0 1 1 2 3 3 3] are not.
- The first queue of a group must be aligned to a multiple of the context
size, e.g. if queues [0 1 2 3 4] are defined globally, allowed group
combinations are [0 1] and [2 3]; groups [1 2] and [3 4] are not
supported.
- RSS hash key, while configurable per context, must be exactly 40 bytes
long.
- The only supported hash algorithm is Toeplitz.

This patch adds a new benchmarking mode, which is intended for
microbenchmarking individual parts of the cryptodev framework,
specifically crypto ops alloc-build-free, cryptodev PMD enqueue
and cryptodev PMD dequeue.
It works by first benchmarking crypto operation alloc-build-free
loop (no enqueues/dequeues happening), and then benchmarking
enqueue and dequeue separately, by first completely filling up the
TX queue, and then completely draining the RX queue.
Results are shown as cycle counts per alloc/build/free, PMD enqueue
and PMD dequeue.
One new test mode is added: "pmd-cyclecount"
(called with --ptest=pmd-cyclecount)
New command-line argument is also added:
--pmd-cyclecount-delay-ms: this is a pmd-cyclecount-specific parameter
that controls the delay between enqueue and dequeue. This is
useful for benchmarking hardware acceleration, as hardware may
not be able to keep up with enqueued packets. This parameter
can be increased if there are large amounts of dequeue
retries.

This commit extends the testpmd application with new forwarding engine
that demonstrates the use of ethdev traffic management APIs and softnic
PMD for QoS traffic management.
In this mode, 5-level hierarchical tree of the QoS scheduler is built
with the help of ethdev TM APIs such as shaper profile add/delete,
shared shaper add/update, node add/delete, hierarchy commit, etc.
The hierarchical tree has following nodes; root node(x1, level 0),
subport node(x1, level 1), pipe node(x4096, level 2),
tc node(x16348, level 3), queue node(x65536, level 4).
During runtime, each received packet is first classified by mapping the
packet fields information to 5-tuples (HQoS subport, pipe, traffic class,
queue within traffic class, and color) and storing it in the packet mbuf
sched field. After classification, each packet is sent to softnic port
which prioritizes the transmission of the received packets, and
accordingly sends them on to the output interface.
To enable traffic management mode, following testpmd command is used;
$ ./testpmd -c c -n 4 --vdev
'net_softnic0,hard_name=0000:06:00.1,soft_tm=on' -- -i

They may also contain a single VLAN tag. GRE GSO doesn't check if all
input packets have correct checksums and doesn't update checksums for
output packets. Additionally, it doesn't process IP fragmented packets.
As with VxLAN GSO, GRE GSO uses a two-segment MBUF to organize each
output packet, which requires multi-segment mbuf support in the TX
functions of the NIC driver. Also, if a packet is GSOed, GRE GSO reduces
its MBUF refcnt by 1. As a result, when all of its GSOed segments are

This patch adds a framework that allows GSO on tunneled packets.

VxLAN GSO doesn't check if input packets have correct checksums and

As with TCP/IPv4 GSO, VxLAN GSO uses a two-segment MBUF to organize each
output packet, which mandates support for multi-segment mbufs in the TX
functions of the NIC driver. Also, if a packet is GSOed, VxLAN GSO

are freed, the packet is freed automatically.

This patch adds GSO support for TCP/IPv4 packets. Supported packets
may include a single VLAN tag. TCP/IPv4 GSO doesn't check if input
packets have correct checksums, and doesn't update checksums for
output packets (the responsibility for this lies with the application).
Additionally, TCP/IPv4 GSO doesn't process IP fragmented packets.
TCP/IPv4 GSO uses two chained MBUFs, one direct MBUF and one indrect
MBUF, to organize an output packet. Note that we refer to these two
chained MBUFs as a two-segment MBUF. The direct MBUF stores the packet
header, while the indirect mbuf simply points to a location within the
original packet's payload. Consequently, use of the GSO library requires
multi-segment MBUF support in the TX functions of the NIC driver.
If a packet is GSO'd, TCP/IPv4 GSO reduces its MBUF refcnt by 1. As a
result, when all of its GSOed segments are freed, the packet is freed
automatically.

Generic Segmentation Offload (GSO) is a SW technique to split large
packets into small ones. Akin to TSO, GSO enables applications to
operate on large packets, thus reducing per-packet processing overhead.
To enable more flexibility to applications, DPDK GSO is implemented
as a standalone library. Applications explicitly use the GSO library
to segment packets. To segment a packet requires two steps. The first
is to set proper flags to mbuf->ol_flags, where the flags are the same
as that of TSO. The second is to call the segmentation API,
rte_gso_segment(). This patch introduces the GSO API framework to DPDK.
rte_gso_segment() splits an input packet into small ones in each
invocation. The GSO library refers to these small packets generated
by rte_gso_segment() as GSO segments. Each of the newly-created GSO
segments is organized as a two-segment MBUF, where the first segment is a
standard MBUF, which stores a copy of packet header, and the second is an
indirect MBUF which points to a section of data in the input packet.
rte_gso_segment() reduces the refcnt of the input packet by 1. Therefore,
when all GSO segments are freed, the input packet is freed automatically.
Additionally, since each GSO segment has multiple MBUFs (i.e. 2 MBUFs),
the driver of the interface which the GSO segments are sent to should
support to transmit multi-segment packets.
The GSO framework clears the PKT_TX_TCP_SEG flag for both the input
packet, and all produced GSO segments in the event of success, since
segmentation in hardware is no longer required at that point.

A new feature is required for describing the firmware upload
capability coming with the NFP PF now, so the PF file will be
updated soon in another patch.
SRIOV is not supported by the PF yet, and it is wrong to include it
as a VF driver feature, so none of the files have such a feature.

The patch simplifies DPDK applications analysis for developers which use
Intel® VTune Amplifier.
The empty cycles are such iterations that yielded no RX packets. As far as
DPDK is running in poll mode, wasting cycles is equal to wasting CPU time.
Tracing such iterations can identify that device is underutilized. Tracing
empty cycles becomes even more critical if a system uses a lot of Ethernet
ports.
The patch gives possibility to analyze empty cycles without changing
application code. All needs to be done is just to reconfigure and rebuild
the DPDK itself with CONFIG_RTE_ETHDEV_PROFILE_ITT_WASTED_RX_ITERATIONS
enbled. The important thing here is that this does not affect DPDK code.
The profiling code is not being compiled if user does not specify config
flag.
The patch provides common way to inject RX queues profiling and VTune
specific implementation.

This patch adds a new eth_dev layer API function rte_eth_dev_reset(),
which a DPDK application can call to reset a NIC and keep its port id
afterwards. It means that all software resources allocated in the ethdev
layer are kept, and software & hardware resources of the NIC within the
NIC's PMD are reset to a state simular to that obtained by calling the
PCI dev_uninit() and then dev_init(). This effective sequence of
dev_uninit() and dev_init() is packed into a single API function
rte_eth_dev_reset().
Please see the comments before the declaration of rte_eht_dev_reset()
in lib/librte_ether/rte_ethdev.h to get more details on why this
function is needed, what it does, when it should be called
and what an application should do after calling this function.

rte_cryptodev_allocate_driver() function gets one parameter
(rte_driver), as the cryptodev_driver structure is
allocated inside the function with rte_malloc.
This function is called from a constructor function,
when crypto PMDs are registered.
If malloc fails, there is no way to recover from it,
so it is better to allocate this structure
statically, in each PMD.
Therefore, it is required to add an extra parameter in
this function, to also get a pointer to this structure.
