When a secondary process wants access to the VFIO container file
descriptor, the primary process calls vfio_get_container_fd() which
always opens an entirely new file descriptor on /dev/vfio/vfio.
However, once the file descriptor has been passed to the subprocess, it
is effectively duplicated, meaning that the copy of the file descriptor
in the primary process is no longer needed. However, the primary
process does not close the duplicate fd, which results in a resource
leak.
This can be reproduced by starting a primary process with a small
RLIMIT_NOFILE limit configured to use VFIO for at least one device, and
repeatedly launching secondary processes until the file descriptor limit
is exceeded.
Fix the resource leak by closing the local vfio container file
descriptor after passing it to the secondary process.

Since the mapping is only needed in zero copy mode so far, we could
avoid such time consuming settup when zero copy is turned off (which is

This patch adds a user defined name initializing parameter to cryptodev
library.
Originally, for software cryptodev PMD, the vdev name parameter is
treated as the driver identifier, and will create an unique name for each
device automatically, which is not necessarily as same as the vdev
parameter.
This patch allows the user to either create a unique name for his software
cryptodev, or by default, let the system creates a unique one. This should
help the user managing the created cryptodevs easily.
Examples:
CLI command fragment 1: --vdev "crypto_aesni_gcm_pmd"
The above command will result in creating a AESNI-GCM PMD with name of
"crypto_aesni_gcm_X", where postfix X is the number assigned by the system,
starting from 0. This fragment can be placed in the same CLI command
multiple times, resulting the postfixs incremented by one for each new
device.
CLI command fragment 2: --vdev "crypto_aesni_gcm_pmd,name=gcm1"
The above command will result in creating a AESNI-GCM PMD with name of
"gcm1". This fragment can be placed in the same CLI command multiple

Elastic Flow Distributor (EFD) is a distributor library that uses
perfect hashing to determine a target/value for a given incoming flow key.
It has the following advantages:
- First, because it uses perfect hashing, it does not store
the key itself and hence lookup performance is not dependent
on the key size.
- Second, the target/value can be any arbitrary value hence
the system designer and/or operator can better optimize service rates
and inter-cluster network traffic locating.
- Third, since the storage requirement is much smaller than a hash-based
flow table (i.e. better fit for CPU cache), EFD can scale to
millions of flow keys.
Finally, with current optimized library implementation performance
is fully scalable with number of CPU cores.

This patch optimizes rte_memcpy for well aligned cases, where both
dst and src addr are aligned to maximum MOV width. It introduces a
dedicated function called rte_memcpy_aligned to handle the aligned
cases with simplified instruction stream. The existing rte_memcpy
is renamed as rte_memcpy_generic. The selection between them 2 is
done at the entry of rte_memcpy.
The existing rte_memcpy is for generic cases, it handles unaligned
copies and make store aligned, it even makes load aligned for micro
architectures like Ivy Bridge. However alignment handling comes at
a price: It adds extra load/store instructions, which can cause
complications sometime.
DPDK Vhost memcpy with Mergeable Rx Buffer feature as an example:
The copy is aligned, and remote, and there is header write along
which is also remote. In this case the memcpy instruction stream
should be simplified, to reduce extra load/store, therefore reduce
the probability of load/store buffer full caused pipeline stall, to
let the actual memcpy instructions be issued and let H/W prefetcher
goes to work as early as possible.
This patch is tested on Ivy Bridge, Haswell and Skylake, it provides
up to 20% gain for Virtio Vhost PVP traffic, with packet size ranging
from 64 to 1500 bytes.
The test can also be conducted without NIC, by setting loopback
traffic between Virtio and Vhost. For example, modify the macro
TXONLY_DEF_PACKET_LEN to the requested packet size in testpmd.h,

return eth_dev;
Since it's a first PCI device, port_id will be 0. eth_dev->data would
then point to rte_eth_dev_data[0]. And here things start going wrong,
as rte_eth_dev_data[0] actually stores the virtio_hw for 00:04.0.
That said, in the secondary process, DPDK will continue to drive PCI
device 00.03.0 (despite the fact it's been managed by kernel), with
the info from PCI device 00:04.0. Which is wrong.
The fix is to attach the port already registered by the primary process.
That is, iterate the rte_eth_dev_data[], and get the port id who's PCI
ID matches the current PCI device.
This would let us maintain same port ID for the same PCI device, keeping
the chance of referencing to wrong data minimal.

Currently select() is used to monitor file descriptors for vhostuser
ports. This limits the number of ports possible to create since the
fd number is used as index in the fd_set and we have seen fds > 1023.
This patch changes select() to poll(). This way we can keep an
packed (pollfd) array for the fds, e.g. as many fds as the size of
the array.

REPLY_ACK features provide a generic way for QEMU to ensure both
completion and success of a request.
As described in vhost-user spec in QEMU repository, QEMU sets
VHOST_USER_NEED_REPLY flag (bit 3) when expecting a reply_ack from
the backend. Backend must reply with 0 for success or non-zero
otherwise when flag is set.
Currently, only VHOST_USER_SET_MEM_TABLE request implements reply_ack,
in order to synchronize mapping updates.
This patch enables REPLY_ACK feature generally, but only checks error

chained mbuf before crypto operation and extend their capabilities to
support segmented mbufs when device cannot handle them natively.
Included unit tests for rte_pktmbuf_linearize functionality:
1) Creates banch of segmented mbufs with different size and number of
segments.
2) Fills noncontigouos mbuf with sequential values.
3) Uses rte_pktmbuf_linearize to coalesce segmented buffer into one

allow us to fix some checkpatch warnings, as well as being good

For the checkpatch warnings, if we have a set of command line
args that we want to check defined as:
static const char *args[] = { "arg1", "arg2", NULL };
kvlist = rte_kvargs_parse(params, args);
checkpatch will complain:

Added API for `rte_eth_tx_prepare`
uint16_t rte_eth_tx_prepare(uint8_t port_id, uint16_t queue_id,
struct rte_mbuf **tx_pkts, uint16_t nb_pkts)
Added fields to the `struct rte_eth_desc_lim`:
uint16_t nb_seg_max;
/**< Max number of segments per whole packet. */
uint16_t nb_mtu_seg_max;
/**< Max number of segments per one MTU */
These fields can be used to create valid packets according to the
following rules:
* For non-TSO packet, a single transmit packet may span up to
"nb_mtu_seg_max" buffers.
* For TSO packet the total number of data descriptors is "nb_seg_max",
and each segment within the TSO may span up to "nb_mtu_seg_max".
Added functions:
int
rte_validate_tx_offload(struct rte_mbuf *m)
to validate general requirements for tx offload set in mbuf of packet
such a flag completness. In current implementation this function is
called optionaly when RTE_LIBRTE_ETHDEV_DEBUG is enabled.
int rte_net_intel_cksum_prepare(struct rte_mbuf *m)
to prepare pseudo header checksum for TSO and non-TSO tcp/udp packets
before hardware tx checksum offload.
- for non-TSO tcp/udp packets full pseudo-header checksum is
counted and set.
- for TSO the IP payload length is not included.
int
rte_net_intel_cksum_flags_prepare(struct rte_mbuf *m, uint64_t ol_flags)
this function uses same logic as rte_net_intel_cksum_prepare, but
allows application to choose which offloads should be taken into
account, if full preparation is not required.
PERFORMANCE TESTS
-----------------
This feature was tested with modified csum engine from test-pmd.
The packet checksum preparation was moved from application to Tx
preparation step placed before burst.
We may expect some overhead costs caused by:
1) using additional callback before burst,
2) rescanning burst,
3) additional condition checking (packet validation),
4) worse optimization (e.g. packet data access, etc.)
We tested it using ixgbe Tx preparation implementation with some parts
disabled to have comparable information about the impact of different
parts of implementation.
IMPACT:
1) For unimplemented Tx preparation callback the performance impact is
negligible,
2) For packet condition check without checksum modifications (nb_segs,
available offloads, etc.) is 14626628/14252168 (~2.62% drop),
3) Full support in ixgbe driver (point 2 + packet checksum
initialization) is 14060924/13588094 (~3.48% drop)

The function rte_eth_xstats_get() return an array of tuples (id,
value). The value is the statistic counter, while the id references a
name in the array returned by rte_eth_xstats_get_name().
Today, each 'id' returned by rte_eth_xstats_get() is equal to the index
in the returned array, making this value useless. It also prevents a
driver from having different indexes for names and value, like in the
example below:
rte_eth_xstats_get_name() returns:
0: "rx0_stat"
1: "rx1_stat"
2: ...
7: "rx7_stat"
8: "tx0_stat"
9: "tx1_stat"
...
15: "tx7_stat"
rte_eth_xstats_get() returns:
0: id=0, val=<stat> ("rx0_stat")
1: id=1, val=<stat> ("rx1_stat")
2: id=8, val=<stat> ("tx0_stat")
3: id=9, val=<stat> ("tx1_stat")
This patch fixes the drivers to set the 'id' in their ethdev->xstats_get()
(except e1000 which was already doing it), and fixes ethdev by not setting
the 'id' field to the index of the table for pmd-specific stats: instead,
they should just be shifted by the max number of generic statistics.

This new API supersedes all the legacy filter types described in
rte_eth_ctrl.h. It is slightly higher level and as a result relies more on
PMDs to process and validate flow rules.
Benefits:
- A unified API is easier to program for, applications do not have to be
written for a specific filter type which may or may not be supported by
the underlying device.
- The behavior of a flow rule is the same regardless of the underlying
device, applications do not need to be aware of hardware quirks.
- Extensible by design, API/ABI breakage should rarely occur if at all.
- Documentation is self-standing, no need to look up elsewhere.

root cause:
In existing case(vdev initialization and then pci

following port ids
0 - Bond device
1 - PCI device 0
2 - PCI devive 1
Since testpmd, calls the configure/start on all the ports on

1)bond device configure/start
1.1) pci device0 stop/configure/start
1.2) pci device1 stop/configure/start
2)pci device 0 configure(illegal setup case,

Today, all logs whose level is lower than INFO are dropped at
compile-time. This prevents from enabling debug logs at runtime using
--log-level=8.
The rationale was to remove debug logs from the data path at
compile-time, avoiding a test at run-time.
This patch changes the behavior of RTE_LOG() to avoid the compile-time
optimization, and introduces the RTE_LOG_DP() macro that has the same
behavior than the previous RTE_LOG(), for the rare cases where debug
logs are in the data path.
So it is now possible to enable debug logs at run-time by just
specifying --log-level=8. Some drivers still have special compile-time

cache access efficiency for cases where the mrg_rxbuf feature is turned
on. CPU pipeline stall cycles can be significantly reduced.
Virtio header write and mbuf data copy are all remote store operations
which takes a long time to finish. It's a good idea to put them together
to remove bubbles in between, to let as many remote store instructions
as possible go into store buffer at the same time to hide latency, and
to let the H/W prefetcher goes to work as early as possible.
On a Haswell machine, about 100 cycles can be saved per packet by this
patch alone. Taking 64B packets traffic for example, this means about 60%
efficiency improvement for the enqueue operation.

Before this patch, application-specific loggers could not be
installed before rte_eal_init completed (the initialization process
called rte_openlog_stream, overwriting any previously installed
logger). This made it impossible for an application to capture the
initial log messages generated during rte_eal_init. This patch changes
initialization so that information from a previous call to
rte_openlog_stream is not lost. Specifically:
* The default log stream is now maintained separately from an
application-specific log stream installed with rte_openlog_stream.
* rte_eal_common_log_init has been renamed to eal_log_set_default,
since this is all it does. It no longer invokes rte_openlog_stream; it
just updates the default stream. Also, this method now returns void,
rather than int, since there are no errors.
This patch also removes the "early log" mechanism and cleans up the
log initialization mechanism:
* The default log stream defaults to stderr on all platforms if
eal_log_set_default hasn't been invoked (Linux used to use stdout
during the first part of initialization).
* Removed rte_eal_log_early_init; all of the desired functionality can
be achieved by calling eal_log_set_default.
* Removed lib/librte_eal/bsdapp/eal/eal_log.c: it contained only one
function, rte_eal_log_init, which is not needed or invoked for BSD.
* Removed declaration for eal_default_log_stream in rte_log.h (it's now
private to eal_common_log.c).
* Moved call to rte_eal_log_init earlier in rte_eal_init for Linux, so
that it starts using the preferrred log ASAP.

Before this patch, only one flag was available:
PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_BAD: L4 cksum of RX pkt. is not OK.
And same for L3:
PKT_RX_IP_CKSUM_BAD: IP cksum of RX pkt. is not OK.
This had 2 issues:
- it was not possible to differentiate "checksum good" from
"checksum unknown".
- it was not possible for a virtual driver to say "the checksum
in packet may be wrong, but data integrity is valid".
This patch tries to solve this issue by having 4 states (2 bits)
for the IP and L4 Rx checksums. New values are:
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_UNKNOWN: no information about the RX L4 checksum
-> the application should verify the checksum by sw
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_BAD: the L4 checksum in the packet is wrong
-> the application can drop the packet without additional check
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_GOOD: the L4 checksum in the packet is valid
-> the application can accept the packet without verifying the
checksum by sw
- PKT_RX_L4_CKSUM_NONE: the L4 checksum is not correct in the packet
data, but the integrity of the L4 data is verified.
-> the application can process the packet but must not verify the
checksum by sw. It has to take care to recalculate the cksum
if the packet is transmitted (either by sw or using tx offload)
And same for L3 (replace L4 by IP in description above).
This commit tries to be compatible with existing applications that
only check the existing flag (CKSUM_BAD).

This patch fixes a Windows VM compatibility issue in DPDK 16.07 vhost code
which causes the guest to hang once any packets are enqueued when mrg_rxbuf
is turned on by setting the right id and len in the used ring.
As defined in virtio spec 0.95 and 1.0, in each used ring element, id means
index of start of used descriptor chain, and len means total length of the
descriptor chain which was written to. While in 16.07 code, index of the
last descriptor is assigned to id, and the length of the last descriptor is
assigned to len.
How to test?
1. Start testpmd in the host with a vhost port.
2. Start a Windows VM image with qemu and connect to the vhost port.
3. Start io forwarding with tx_first in host testpmd.

The basic idea of dequeue zero copy is, instead of copying data from
the desc buf, here we let the mbuf reference the desc buf addr directly.
Doing so, however, has one major issue: we can't update the used ring
at the end of rte_vhost_dequeue_burst. Because we don't do the copy
here, an update of the used ring would let the driver to reclaim the
desc buf. As a result, DPDK might reference a stale memory region.
To update the used ring properly, this patch does several tricks:
- when mbuf references a desc buf, refcnt is added by 1.
This is to pin lock the mbuf, so that a mbuf free from the DPDK
won't actually free it, instead, refcnt is subtracted by 1.
- We chain all those mbuf together (by tailq)
And we check it every time on the rte_vhost_dequeue_burst entrance,
to see if the mbuf is freed (when refcnt equals to 1). If that
happens, it means we are the last user of this mbuf and we are
safe to update the used ring.
- "struct zcopy_mbuf" is introduced, to associate an mbuf with the
right desc idx.
Dequeue zero copy is introduced for performance reason, and some rough
tests show about 50% perfomance boost for packet size 1500B. For small
packets, (e.g. 64B), it actually slows a bit down (well, it could up to
15%). That is expected because this patch introduces some extra works,
and it outweighs the benefit from saving few bytes copy.

But that's not true when dequeue zero copy is enabled, that used ring is
updated only when the mbuf is consumed. Thus, we need use another var to
note the last avail ring idx we have consumed.

into virtio_memory_region struct. But we simply can't do that before,
because it breaks the ABI.
Now, thanks to the ABI refactoring, it's never been a blocking issue

dump the list of flags contained in mbuf->ol_flags.
This commit introduce new functions to do that. Similarly to the packet
type dump functions, the goal is to factorize the code that could be
used in several applications and reduce the risk of desynchronization
between the flags and the dump functions.

Introduce the function rte_net_get_ptype() that parses a mbuf and
returns its packet type. For now, the following packet types are parsed:
L2: Ether
L3: IPv4, IPv6
L4: TCP, UDP, SCTP
The goal here is to provide a reference implementation for packet type
parsing. This function will be used by testpmd in next commits, allowing
to compare its result with the value given by the hardware.
This function will also be useful when implementing Rx offload support
in virtio pmd. Indeed, the virtio protocol gives the csum start and
offset, but it does not give the L4 protocol nor it tells if the
checksum is relevant for inner or outer. This information has to be
known to properly set the ol_flags in mbuf.

If a pci probe operation creates a port but, for any reason, fails to
finish this operation and decides to delete the newly created port, then
the last created port id can not be trusted anymore and any subsequent
attach operations will fail.
This problem was noticed while working on a vm that had a virtio-net

whitelisted in the commandline:

Here, rte_eth_dev_pci_probe() fails since vtpci_init() reports an

Then, if we try to attach a port using rte_eth_dev_attach:

Attaching a new port...

Two solutions:
- either update the last created port index to something invalid
(when freeing a ethdev port),
- or rely on the port count, before and after the eal attach.
The latter solution seems (well not really more robust but at least)
less fragile than the former.
We still have some issues with drivers that create multiple ethdev
ports with a single probe operation, but this was already the case.

Some application use rte_mbuf_raw_alloc() function to improve
performance by not resetting mbuf's fields to their default state.
This can be however problematic for mbuf consumers that need some
headroom, meaning that data_off field gets decremented after
allocation. When the mbuf is re-used afterwards, there might not
be enough room for the consumer to prepend anything, if the data_off
field is not reset to its default value.
This patch adds a new rte_pktmbuf_reset_headroom() function that
applications can call to reset the data_off field.

Running secondary is tricky due to the need to map the memory region
at the right place in VM, which is whatever primary has chosen. If the
base address for primary happens to by already mapped in the
secondary, we will hit precisely these error messages (depending if we
fail on the config region or the hugepages). This is why there is
already a comment about ASLR.
The issue is that in most cases, remapping does not happen and "errno"
is not changed and therefore stale. In our case, we got a "permission
denied", which sent us down the wrong track. It's such a common error
for secondary that I feel this error message should be unambiguous and
helpful.

Indirect descriptors are usually supported by virtio-net devices,
allowing to dispatch a larger number of requests.
When the virtio device sends a packet using indirect descriptors,
only one slot is used in the ring, even for large packets.
The main effect is to improve the 0% packet loss benchmark.
A PVP benchmark using Moongen (64 bytes) on the TE, and testpmd
(fwd io for host, macswap for VM) on DUT shows a +50% gain for
zero loss.
On the downside, micro-benchmark using testpmd txonly in VM and

The code structure is a bit messy now. For example, vhost-user message
handling is spread to three different files:
vhost-net-user.c virtio-net.c virtio-net-user.c
Where, vhost-net-user.c is the entrance to handle all those messages
and then invoke the right method for a specific message. Some of them
are stored at virtio-net.c, while others are stored at virtio-net-user.c.
The truth is all of them should be in one file, vhost_user.c.
So this patch refactors the source code structure: mainly on renaming
files and moving code from one file to another file that is more suitable
for storing it. Thus, no functional changes are made.
After the refactor, the code structure becomes to:
- socket.c handles all vhost-user socket file related stuff, such
as, socket file creation for server mode, reconnection
for client mode.
- vhost.c mainly on stuff like vhost device creation/destroy/reset.
Most of the vhost API implementation are there, too.

- virtio_net.c all stuff about virtio-net should go there. It has virtio

Move all PMD_VDEV-specific code into a separate module and header
file to not polute the generic code anymore. There is now a list
of virtual devices available.
The rte_vdev_driver integrates the original rte_driver inside
(C inheritance). The rte_driver will be however change in the
future to serve as a common base for all other types of drivers.
The existing PMDs (PMD_VDEV) are to be modified later (there is
no change for them at the moment).

Remove bus logic from ethdev hotplug by using eal for this.
Current api is preserved:
- the last port that has been created is tracked to return it to the
application when attaching,
- the internal device name is reused when detaching.
We can not get rid of ethdev hotplug yet since we still need some
mechanism to inform applications of port creation/removal to substitute
for ethdev hotplug api.
dev_type field in struct rte_eth_dev and rte_eth_dev_allocate are kept as
is, but this information is not needed anymore and is removed in the
following commit.

Simplify crypto and ethdev pci drivers init by using newly introduced
init macros and helpers.
Those drivers then don't need to register as "rte_driver"s anymore.

- virtio and mlx* use RTE_INIT directly as they have custom initialization
steps.
- VDEV devices are not modified - they continue to use PMD_REGISTER_DRIVER.

This commit fixes a corner case scenario. When a key is deleted,
its signature in the hash table gets clear, which should prevent
a lookup of that same key, unless the signature of the key is all zeroes.
In that case, there will be a match, and key would be compared against
the key that is in the table (which does not get cleared,
as the performance penalty would be high), resulting in a wrong hit.
To prevent this from happening, the key index associated to that entry
should be set to zero when deleting it, so in case that same key
is looked up just after a deletion, it will point to the dummy key slot,
which guarantees a miss.

Currently while calling of 'rte_vhost_driver_unregister()' connection
to QEMU will not be closed. This leads to inability to register driver
again and reconnect to same virtual machine.
This scenario is reproducible with OVS. While executing of the following
command vhost port will be re-created (will be executed
'rte_vhost_driver_register()' followed by 'rte_vhost_driver_unregister()')
network will be broken and QEMU possibly will crash:
ovs-vsctl set Interface vhost1 ofport_request=15
Fix this by closing all established connections on driver unregister and

If something abnormal happened to QEMU, 'connect()' can block calling

A recent patch brought up an issue about the size of the 'name' fields:
85cf0079 mem: avoid memzone/mempool/ring name truncation
These relations should be observed:
1. Each ring creates a memzone with a prefixed name:
RTE_RING_NAMESIZE <= RTE_MEMZONE_NAMESIZE - strlen(RTE_RING_MZ_PREFIX)
2. There are some mempool handlers which create a ring with a prefixed
name:
RTE_MEMPOOL_NAMESIZE <= RTE_RING_NAMESIZE - strlen(RTE_MEMPOOL_MZ_PREFIX)
3. A mempool can create up to RTE_MAX_MEMZONE pre and postfixed memzones:
sprintf(postfix, "_%d", RTE_MAX_MEMZONE)
RTE_MEMPOOL_NAMESIZE <= RTE_MEMZONE_NAMESIZE -
strlen(RTE_MEMPOOL_MZ_PREFIX) - strlen(postfix)
Setting all of them to 32 hides this restriction from the application.
This patch decreases the mempool and ring string size to accommodate for
these prefixes, but it doesn't apply the 3rd constraint. Applications
relying on these constants need to be recompiled, otherwise they'll run
into ENAMETOOLONG issues.
The size of the arrays are kept 32 for ABI compatibility, it can be
decreased next time the ABI changes.

Protect against DPDK crash when allocation of listen fd >= 1023.
For events on fd:s >1023, the current implementation will trigger
an abort due to access outside of allocated bit mask.
Corrections would include:
* Match fdset_add() signature in fd_man.c to fd_man.h
* Handling of return codes from fdset_add()
* Addition of check of fd number in fdset_add_fd()
The rationale behind the suggested code change is that,
fdset_event_dispatch() could attempt access outside of the FD_SET
bitmask if there is an event on a file descriptor that in turn
looks up a virtio file descriptor with a value > 1023.
Such an attempt will lead to an abort() and a restart of any
vswitch using DPDK.
