520bbb9cd9 doc: update build instructions in the Linux guide
Before removing the "make" build system completely,
the Linux guide instructions are made more concise and accurate.
Some detailed explanations are also available in
doc/guides/prog_guide/dev_kit_root_make_help.rst

This is the swan song for makefile system,
in order to have accurate information backported in LTS.

4a4ca46ae2 doc: remove outdated guidelines for library addition
There was a doc about how to extend DPDK by adding a library.
It could have been useful but was never updated,
so it is lacking a lot of explanations about doxygen,
meson, versioning, maintainership, etc.

Anyway such guidelines should fit in the contributors guide.
Better to completely remove this obsolete document.

15c4318640 app/flow-perf: add packet forwarding support
Introduce packet forwarding support to the app to do
some performance measurements.

The measurements are reported in term of packet per
second unit. The forwarding will start after the end
of insertion/deletion operations.

The support has single and multi performance measurements.

662a72342a app/flow-perf: add memory dump to app
Introduce new feature to dump memory statistics of each socket
and a total for all before and after the creation.

This will give two main advantage:
1- Check the memory consumption for large number of flows
"insertion rate scenario alone"

2- Check that no memory leackage after doing insertion then
deletion.

bf3688f1e8 app/flow-perf: add insertion rate calculation
Add insertion rate calculation feature into flow
performance application.

The application now provide the ability to test
insertion rate of specific rte_flow rule, by
stressing it to the NIC, and calculate the
insertion rate.

The application offers some options in the command
line, to configure which rule to apply.

After that the application will start producing
rules with same pattern but increasing the outer IP
source address by 1 each time, thus it will give
different flow each time, and all other items will
have open masks.

The current design have single core insertion rate.

c79a1c6746 bus/pci: optimize bus scan

a7d42145cc net/pcap: support Tx nanosecond timestamps
When capturing packets into a PCAP file, DPDK currently uses
microseconds for the timestamps. But libpcap supports interpreting
tv_usec as nanoseconds depending on the file timestamp precision,
as of commit ba89e4a18e8b ("Make timestamps precision configurable").

To support this, use PCAP_TSTAMP_PRECISION_NANO when creating the
empty PCAP file as specified by PCAP_OPEN_DEAD(3PCAP) and implement
nanosecond timeval addition. This also ensures that the precision
reported by capinfos is nanoseconds (9).

Note that NSEC_PER_SEC is defined as 1000000000L instead of 1e9 since
the latter might be interpreted as floating point.

67a661ed85 eal: replace page sizes enum with a set of constants
Clang on Windows follows MS ABI where enum values are limited to 2^31-1.
Enum rte_page_sizes has members valued above this limit, which get
wrapped to zero, resulting in compilation error (duplicate values in
enum). Using MS ABI is mandatory for Windows EAL to call Win32 APIs.

Remove rte_page_sizes and replace its values with #define's.
This enumeration is not used in public API, so there's no ABI breakage.

a1da6f624c net/mlx5: add reclaim memory mode
Currently, when flow destroyed, some memory resources may still be kept
as cached to help next time create flow more efficiently.

Some system may need the resources to be more flexible with flow create
and destroy. After peak time, with millions of flows destroyed, the
system would prefer the resources to be reclaimed completely, no cache
is needed. Then the resources can be allocated and used by other
components. The system is not so sensitive about the flow insertion
rate, but more care about the resources.

Both DPDK mlx5 PMD driver and the low level component rdma-core have
provided the flow resources to be configured cached or not, but there is
no APIs or parameters exposed to user to configure the flow resources
cache mode. In this case, introduce a new PMD devarg to let user
configure the flow resources cache mode will be helpful.

This commit is to add a new "reclaim_mem_mode" to help user configure if
the destroyed flows' cache resources should be kept or not.

Their will be three mode can be chosen:
1. 0(none). It means the flow resources will be cached as usual. The
resources will be cached, helpful with flow insertion rate.
2. 1(light). It will only enable the DPDK PMD level resources reclaim.
3. 2(aggressive). Both DPDK PMD level and rdma-core low level will be
configured as reclaimed mode.

With these three mode, user can configure the resources cache mode with
different levels.

60814f955c doc: fix API index
With Doxygen 1.8.18, a warning appears when tagging
the main markdown header with {#index}.
That's why the tag has been removed from the API index in DPDK 20.05.
Unfortunately it makes the index page classified as a standard
"related page" instead of being the "main page".

The tag {#mainpage} could be used instead of {#index}.
Another solution, chosen here, is to specify the main page file
in the Doxygen configuration with the variable USE_MDFILE_AS_MAINPAGE.

For the ABI compatibility it is better to hide internal data structures
from the application as much as possible. But because of some inline

Plan is to split the 'struct eth_dev_ops' into two as ones used by
inline functions and ones not used, and hide the second part that not
used by inline functions completely to the application.

Because of ABI break the work will be done in 20.11

05a38d7c75 compat: provide experimental alias for matured ABI
On v20.02 some APIs matured and symbols moved from EXPERIMENTAL to
DPDK_20.0.1 block.

This had the affect of breaking the applications that were using these
APIs on v19.11. Although there is no modification of the APIs and the
action is positive and matures the APIs, the affect can be negative to
applications.

When a maintainer is promoting an API to become part of the next major
ABI version by removing the experimental tag. The maintainer may
choose to offer an alias to the experimental tag, to prevent these
breakages in future.

The following changes are made to enabling aliasing:

Updated to the ABI policy and ABI versioning documents.

Created VERSION_SYMBOL_EXPERIMENTAL helper macro.

Updated the 'check-symbols.sh' tool, which was complaining that the
symbol is in EXPERIMENTAL tag in .map file but it is not in the
.experimental section (__rte_experimental tag is missing).
Updated tool in a way it won't complain if the symbol in the

563ac307a4 net/mlx5: support match on GTP flags
This patch adds to MLX5 PMD the support of matching on
GTP header item v_pt_rsv_flags.

| bit | 0 - 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
|-----------------------------------------|
| value | Version | PT | Res | E | S | PN |

6b30428820 doc: refine ethernet and VLAN flow rule items
Specified pattern may be translated in different manner.
For example the pattern "eth / ipv4" can be translated to match
untagged packets only, since the pattern doesn't specify a VLAN item.
It can also be translated to match both tagged and untagged packets,
for the same reason.
This patch updates the rte_flow documentation to clearly specify the
required pattern to use.
For example:
To match tagged ipv4 packets, the pattern "eth / vlan / ipv4 / end"
should be used.
To match untagged ipv4 packets, the pattern "eth / ipv4 / end"
should be used.
To match all IPV4 packets, both tagged and untagged, need to apply
two rules with the patterns above.
To match both tagged and untagged packets of any type, the pattern
"eth / end" should be used.

9eb974221f app/testpmd: fix statistics after reset
Currently, when running start/clear stats&xstats/stop command many times
based on testpmd application, there are incorrect forward Rx/Tx-packets
stats as below:
---------------------- Forward statistics for port 0 --------------
RX-packets: 18446744073709544808 RX-dropped: 0 <snip>
TX-packets: 18446744073709536616 TX-dropped: 0 <snip>
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The root cause as below:
1. The struct rte_port of testpmd.h has a member variable "struct
rte_eth_stats stats" to store the last port statistics.
2. When running start command, it execute cmd_start_parsed ->
   start_packet_forwarding -> fwd_stats_reset, which call
rte_eth_stats_get API function to save current port statistics.
3. When running stop command, it execute fwd_stats_display, which call
rte_eth_stats_get to get current port statistics, and then minus last
   port statistics.
4. If we run clear stats or xstats after start command, then run stop,
it may display above incorrect stats because the current
Rx/Tx-packets is lower than the last saved RX/TX-packets(uint64_t
   overflow).

This patch fixes it by clearing last port statistics when executing
"clear stats/xstats" command.

44bf3c796b ethdev: support flow aging
One of the reasons to destroy a flow is the fact that no packet matches
the flow for "timeout" time.
For example, when TCP\UDP sessions are suddenly closed.

Currently, there is not any DPDK mechanism for flow aging and the
applications use their own ways to detect and destroy aged-out flows.

The flow aging implementation need include:
- A new rte_flow action: RTE_FLOW_ACTION_TYPE_AGE to set the timeout and
the application flow context for each flow.
- A new ethdev event: RTE_ETH_EVENT_FLOW_AGED for the driver to report
that there are new aged-out flows.
- A new rte_flow API: rte_flow_get_aged_flows to get the aged-out flows
  contexts from the port.
- Support input flow aging command line in Testpmd.

The new event type addition in the enum is flagged as an ABI breakage,
so an ignore rule is added for these reasons:
- It is not changing value of existing types (except MAX)
- The new value is not used by existing API if the event is not
  registered
In general, it is safe adding new ethdev event types at the end of the
enum, because of event callback registration mechanism.

02a95625fe net/bnxt: add flow stats in extended stats
This patch allows to display flow stats in extended stats.
To do this, DMA-able memory is registered with the FW during device
initialization. Then the driver uses an alarm thread to query the
per flow stats using the HWRM_CFA_COUNTER_QSTATS HWRM command at
regular intervals and stores it locally which will be displayed
when the application queries the xstats.
The DMA-able memory is unregistered during driver cleanup.
This functionality can be enabled using the flow-xstat devarg and
will be disabled by default. The intention behind this is to allow
stats to be displayed for all the flows in one shot instead of
querying one at a time.

e1e73e3229 net/ena: add Tx drops statistic
ENA device can report in the AENQ handler amount of Tx packets that were
dropped and not sent.

This statistic is showing global value for the device and because
rte_eth_stats is missing field that could indicate this value (it
isn't the Tx error), it is being presented as a extended statistic.

As the current design of extended statistics prevents tx_drops from
being an atomic variable and both tx_drops and rx_drops are only updated
from the AENQ handler, both were set as non-atomic for the alignment.

8a7a73f26c net/ena: support large LLQ headers
Default LLQ (Low-latency queue) maximum header size is 96 bytes and can
be too small for some types of packets - like IPv6 packets with multiple
extension. This can be fixed, by using large LLQ headers.

If the device supports larger LLQ headers, the user can activate them by
using device argument 'large_llq_hdr' with value '1'.

If the device isn't supporting this feature, the default value (96B)

dac98e8780 net/mlx5: fix zero value validation for metadata
MARK and META items are interrelated with datapath -
they might move from/to the applications in mbuf.

zero value for these items has the special meaning -
it means "no metadata are provided", not zero values
are treated by applications and PMD as valid ones.

Moreover in the flow engine domain the value zero is
acceptable to match and set, and we should allow to
specify zero values as rte_flow parameters for the
META and MARK items and actions. In the same time
zero mask has no meaning and should be rejected
on validation stage.

53ac93f71a net/mlx5: create relaxed ordering memory regions
In the current state, when preforming read/write
transactions we must wait for a completion in order
to run the next transaction, and all transactions are
performed by order.

Relaxed Ordering is a PCI optimization which by enabling it
we allow the system to perform read/writes in a different
order without having to wait for completion and improve
the performance in that matter.

This commit introduces the creation of relaxed ordering
memory regions in mlx5.
As relaxed ordering is an optimization, drivers that
do not support it can simply ignore it and therefore
it is enabled by default.

This patch implements a special way of buffer handling when internal

Instead of falling back to fixed compression, the operation is now
split into multiple smaller dynamic compression requests (possible to

092454d999 examples/l2fwd-event: add option to configure port pairs
Current l2fwd-event application statically configures adjacent ports as
destination ports for forwarding the traffic.

Add a config option to pass the forwarding port pair mapping which allows
the user to configure forwarding port mapping.

If no config argument is specified, destination port map is not
changed and traffic gets forwarded with existing mapping.

To align port/queue configuration of each lcore with destination port
map, port/queue configuration of each lcore gets modified when config
option is specified.

Ex: ./l2fwd-event -c 0xff -- -p 0x3f -q 2 --config="(0,3)(1,4)(2,5)"

With above config option, traffic received from portid = 0 gets forwarded
to port = 3 and vice versa, similarly traffic gets forwarded on other port
pairs (1,4) and (2,5).

536db938a4 net/cxgbe: add devargs to control filtermode and filtermask
Apart from the 4-tuple (IP src/dst addresses and TCP/UDP src/dst

fields can fit in the 40-bit tuple.

Currently, the combination of packet header fields to match are
configured via filterMode for LETCAM filters and filterMask for
HASH filters in firmware config files (t5/t6-config.txt). So, add
devargs to allow User to dynamically select the filterMode and
filterMask combination during runtime, without having to modify the
firmware config files and reflashing them onto the adapter. A table
of supported combinations is maintained by the driver to internally
translate the User specified devargs combination to hardware's internal
format before writing the requested combination to hardware

40486d3849 net/hns3: support promiscuous and allmulticast mode for VF
Currently, we only support VF device is bound to vfio_pci or igb_uio and
then driven by DPDK driver when PF is driven by kernel mode hns3 ethdev
driver, VF is not supported when PF is driven by hns3 DPDK driver.

This patch adds promiscuous and allmulticast mode support for hns3 VF
PMD driver.
1) The promiscuous/allmulticast mode can be configured successfully only
based on the trusted VF device. If based on the non trusted VF
device, configuring promiscuous/allmulticast mode will fail. The hns3
VF device can be configured as trusted device by hns3 PF kernel
ethdev driver on the host by "ip link set <eth num> vf <vf id> turst
   on" command.
2) After the promiscuous mode is configured successfully, hns3 VF PMD
driver can receive the ingress and outgoing traffic. In the words,
all the ingress packets, all the packets sent from the PF and other
VFs on the same physical port.
3) Note: Because of the hardware constraints, By default vlan filter is
enabled and couldn't be turned off based on VF device, so vlan filter
is still effective even in promiscuous mode. If upper applications
don't call rte_eth_dev_vlan_filter API function to set vlan based on
VF device, hns3 VF PMD driver will can't receive the packets with
   vlan tag in promiscuous mode.

MinGW-w64 linker does not mimic MS linker options, so the build system

MinGW-w64 by default uses MSVCRT stdio, which does not comply to ANSI,
most notably its formatting and string handling functions. MinGW-w64
support for the Universal CRT (UCRT) is ongoing, but the toolchain
provides its own standard-complying implementation of stdio. The latter

6affeabaf3 net/mlx: add static ibverbs linkage with meson
The libibverbs (and libmlx4/5) can be statically embedded
in the shared PMD library, or in the application with the static PMD.
It was supported with make build system in
commit 2c0dd7b69f ("config: add static linkage of mlx dependency").

The same feature is enabled with meson when using pkg-config
(i.e. only if the call to dependency() is successful).
The fallback method for searching library with cc.find_library()
is not supported because the dependencies of the found library
would not be linked (no such info in .a file unlike .so).

The main difference, in meson build system, is the generated .pc file
giving arguments to link DPDK with the application.
Unfortunately the .pc file will not keep memory of the static linkage
option for libibverbs.

00f75a4057 net/mlx5: fix VLAN match for DV mode
Currently MLX5 PMD can't match on untagged packets specifically.
Tagged traffic still hits the flows intended for untagged packets.
If the flow has ETH, it will catch all matching packets, tagged
and untagged.
The solution is to use cvlan_tag bit.
If mask=1 and value=0 it matches on untagged traffic.
If mask=1 and value=1 it matches on tagged traffic.
This is the kernel implementation.

This patch updated MLX5 PMD to set cvlan_tag mask and value according
to flow rule contents.
This update is relevant when using DV flow engine (dv_flow_en=1).

See example at https://doc.dpdk.org/guides/nics/mlx5.html#limitations.

95276abaaf vdpa/mlx5: introduce Mellanox vDPA driver
Add a new driver to support vDPA operations by Mellanox devices.

The first Mellanox devices which support vDPA operations are
ConnectX-6 Dx and Bluefield1 HCA for their PF ports and VF ports.

This driver is depending on rdma-core like the mlx5 PMD, also it is
going to use mlx5 DevX to create HW objects directly by the FW.
Hence, the common/mlx5 library is linked to the mlx5_vdpa driver.

This driver will not be compiled by default due to the above
dependencies.

b4bf22d173 net/octeontx2: change default RSS hash calculation
Before C0 HW revision, The RSS adder was computed based the following
static formula.

rss_adder<7:0> = flow_tag<7:0> ^ flow_tag<15:8> ^
flow_tag<23:16> ^ flow_tag<31:24>

The above scheme has the following drawbacks:
1) It is not in line with other standard NIC behavior.
2) There can be an SW use case where SW can compute the hash
upfront using Toeplitz function and predict the queue selection
to optimize some packet lookup function. The nonstandard
way of doing XOR makes the consumer to not predict the queue selection.

C0 HW revision onward, The HW can configure the
rss_adder<7:0> as flow_tag<7:0> to align with standard NICs.

This patch adds an option to select legacy RSS adder mode
using tag_as_xor=1 devargs option while keeping the standard NIC
behavior as default.

f5862ae99e cryptodev: revert Chacha20-Poly1305 AEAD algorithm
API makes think that rte_cryptodev_info_get() cannot return
a value >= 3 (RTE_CRYPTO_AEAD_LIST_END in 19.11).
20.02-rc1 was returning 3 (RTE_CRYPTO_AEAD_CHACHA20_POLY1305).

It could be solved with some function versioning,

777014e56d devtools: add ABI checks
For normal developers, those checks are disabled.

Enabling them requires a configuration that will trigger the ABI dumps
generation as part of the existing devtools/test-build.sh and
devtools/test-meson-builds.sh scripts.

Those checks are enabled in the CI for the default meson options on x86
and aarch64 so that proposed patches are validated via our CI robot.
A cache of the ABI is stored in travis jobs to avoid rebuilding too
often.

Checks can be informational only, by setting ABI_CHECKS_WARN_ONLY when
breaking the ABI in a future release.

Explicit suppression rules have been added on internal structures
exposed to crypto drivers as the current ABI policy does not apply to
them.
This could be improved in the future by carefully splitting the headers
content with application and driver "users" in mind.

We currently have issues reported for librte_crypto recent changes for
which suppression rules have been added too.

Mellanox glue libraries are explicitly skipped as they are not part of
the application ABI.

3f2d6766e3 mempool: remove memory wastage on non-x86
The existing optimize_object_size() function address the memory object
alignment constraint on x86 for better performance.

Different (micro) architecture may have different memory alignment
constraint for better performance and it not the same as the existing
optimize_object_size().

Some use, XOR(kind of CRC) scheme to enable DRAM channel distribution
based on the address and some may have a different formula.

Introducing arch_mem_object_align() function to abstract
the difference between different (micro) architectures to avoid
wasting memory for mempool object alignment for the architecture
that it is not required to do so.

Details on the amount of memory saving:

Currently, arm64 based architectures use the default (nchan=4,
nrank=1). The worst case is for an object whose size (including mempool
header) is 2 cache lines, where it is optimized to 3 cache lines (+50%).

Examples for cache lines size = 64:
  orig optimized
  64    -> 64           +0%
  128   -> 192          +50%
  192   -> 192          +0%
  256   -> 320          +25%
  320   -> 320          +0%
  384   -> 448          +16%
  ...
  2304  -> 2368         +2.7%  (~mbuf size)

b57b66a97e app/testpmd: support mbuf dynamic flag
DPDK now supports registration of dynamic flags (dynf) to the mbuf.
dynf can be given any name, and can be used with a supporting PMD or
supporting application.

Due to the generic concept of the dynf, it is impossible and
meaningless, to define register set/get function for each flag.
This commit introduce a generic way to register and set/clear such
flags.

The basic syntax:
port config <port id> dynf <name> <set|clear>

The first step the new flag is registered. Regardless if the action is
set or clear.
There is no way to unregister the flag, after registering it.

The second step, if the action is set then we set the requested flag.
If this is the first flag that is enabled we also register a call back
for the Tx. In this call back we set the flag.
If the action is clear the requested flag is cleared, and if there
are no more flags that are set, the call back is removed.

The reason that the set is only applied in Tx is that in case of Rx
it is assumed that the value comes from the PMD.

If log is enabled the name of the flag, and value will be printed
in the packet info.
In order for the log to work correctly the registration of the flag
must be done before setting verbose.

eab2177671 net/hns3: support setting VF MAC address by PF driver
Currently, we only support VF device is bound to vfio_pci or igb_uio and

driver, VF is not supported when PF is driven by hns3 DPDK driver.

This patch adds support setting VF MAC address by hns3 PF kernel ethdev
driver on the host by "ip link set ..." command.
1) If the hns3 PF kernel ethdev driver sets the MAC address for VF
device before the initialization of the related VF device, hns3 VF
PMD driver should get the MAC address from PF driver through mailbox
and configure hardware using this MAC address in the initialization.
The hns3 VF PMD driver get the MAC address form PF driver, if
obtaining a non-zero MAC address from mailbox, VF driver will
configure hardware using it, otherwise using a random MAC address in
   the initialization of VF device.
2) If the hns3 PF kernel ethdev driver sets the MAC address for VF
device after the initialization of the related VF device, the PF
driver will notify VF driver to reset VF device to make the new MAC
address effective immediately. The hns3 VF PMD driver should check
whether the MAC address has been changed by the PF kernel netdevice
driver, if changed VF driver should configure hardware using the new
MAC address in the recovering hardware configuration stage of the
   reset process.
3) When user has configured a mac address for VF device by "ip link set
..." command based on the PF device, the hns3 PF kernel ethdev driver
does not allow VF driver to request reconfiguring a different default
mac address and return -EPREM to VF driver through mailbox.

026f21c0b9 common/qat: support dual threads for enqueue/dequeue
Remove the limitation whereby enqueue and dequeue must be
done in same thread.
The inflight calculation is reworked to be thread-safe for 2
threads - note this is not general multi-thread support, i.e
all enqueues to a qp must still be done in one thread and
all dequeues must be done in one thread, but enqueues and
dequeues may be in separate threads.
Documentation updated.

1be7855d77 eal: add wait until equal API
The rte_wait_until_equal_xx APIs abstract the functionality of
'polling for a memory location to become equal to a given value'.

Add the RTE_ARM_USE_WFE configuration entry for aarch64, disabled
by default. When it is enabled, the above APIs will call WFE instruction
to save CPU cycles and power.

From a VM, when calling this API on aarch64, it may trap in and out to
release vCPUs whereas cause high exit latency. Since kernel 4.18.20 an
adaptive trapping mechanism is introduced to balance the latency and
workload.

f5ab2074cf doc: rebuild with meson whenever a file changes
Add proper support for calling sphinx whenever a file in the doc
directory changes. This is accomplished by using a wrapper script
for sphinx, which runs sphinx but also emits a gcc-format dependency
file listing all the doc files. This is used by ninja so that any
change to the doc files triggers a rebuild of the docs.
